Job must be going well.

nice

Our first true snipe. nice.:D

carrigansghost 06-18-2009 09:13 PM

Yes Rob, the job is going really well and I would have bid more had the notice of the ending of the auction been posted before I left for work and the ending time been after I returned from work. 15 hour days do tend to take up a bit of the day and I don't usually take a laptop with me out to tower sites in the desert on the border.

I thank you for the wee bit of sarcasm, I haven't had the chance to respond in kind.

Just curious- if someone topped the $250 bid and it came in at 9:01 Net54 time, would it have been disqualified? Unlike ebay, there are several sets of clocks in play here. Could get tricky.

My assumption is that we go by the board clock and since the auction ended at 9 PM EST, any bid after 9:00:00 would not have counted.

barrysloate 06-19-2009 08:31 AM

Is there a running board clock that bidders can see?

Not that I know of, but when you submit a post, it gets stamped with the official board time.

edited to add: Of course, as any member may use their own set of auction rules, one could indicate that the auction closes by the clock in the naval observatory or on their own wristwatch if they wanted. My presumption though is that when unspecified, people intend to use the clock of the forum.

Thanks Matt.

board clock

The board clock is, not coincidentally, set at CST time. So if someone says an auction ends in EST then it is obvious we will be an hour behind........the clock is easy on single minutes but doesn't do "seconds".....I still think the "up to" bid by the Group is the best of all....kind of like sniping in a major auction where the whole auction resets on each bid....

By default the board is set to display CST, but everyone has the ability (and choses during setup) to display it locally in their own timezone, so most of us do not see it as CST.

And I thought I had some superior control over this thing...shows ya' how much I know..... :o

Adam: Just to let you know that the Stahl postcard arrived safe and sound today. In hand it is a real beauty. Thanks for the auction.

For the record, my last gasp bid was not planned as a snipe but rather was a reaction to a snipe. I hastily put in a fat bid in case there were other snipes forthcoming and then prepared to sweat out the next sixty or so seconds because it wasn't clear precisely when the auction was supposed to end. I am glad there has been the subsequent discussion to refine the specifics of the end-of-auction time. Fortunately, for me anyway, it was a moot point in this auction but I think we've all seen how it could've gotten problematic.
