Fascinating T206s
While in the midst of reading the latest issue of SGC Collector Magazine, I thought I'd ask the following:
Big 4 and Hall of Famers aside, what specific T206 cards do you find most fascinating (show 'em), and why? |
T206 Titus holds a certain mystique...only t206 card featuring a great mustache! I would show a scan of mine but am away from my home at the moment.

fascinating
I still love looking at the Dove or lack thereof on the Ritchey cards.
And Shag's hairdo still brings a smile to my face---particularly when i compare this picture with those in his later life where he looks like the rest of us older baby boomers. still can't scan---sorry. best, barry |
Barry I agree on Shag
He looks like he is scared to move and mess up his hair. D.

Not fascinating or fascinated, but the Joe Tinker portrait has always reminded me of Eraserhead (title character from David Lynch's first movie).

shag
thanks for the scan,D.Broughman.
he does look afraid to move. if i remember correctly, in his later pictures he retains the 'hair precision' but has a bit more of a distinguished military look or old school 'coachly' look. best, barry |
I'm right there with you guys on Shag Shaughnessy. That's my favorite card in the set.
The hairdo is kicka$$ and love the popped collar look. Shaughnessy is available with 3 different backs. Piedmont 350, Brown Hindu, and Old Mill (SL). So it makes a Shaughnessy back set a very possible little subset. Here is my best one: http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/k...hagPiedm-1.jpg |

Good ole Spike with the massive watermelon head and silly putty alligator arms. Along with pomegranate head Stephens, one of the two most unrealistic renderings of human anatomy in the set.

I enjoy the discussions this card can provoke.

I think that image of Tinker also inspired a slight variation in the form of the Flock of Seagulls haircut in the '80's.

Man, that guy from the Flock would have made a great 206 portrait
|
I've always found it interesting that Hal Chase is found with five different poses in the T206 set (the most by any player).
|
I like Bull Durham. Great movie, great card.

Speaking of hair, I think Matty McIntyre's hairdo is right up there with Tinker's and Shag's. What is that? The wind-blown look? At least Tinker's and Shag's looks combed.
(I don't own this card, so I posted the image from the Old Cardboard site). |
These questions are always hard for me to answer
But the reason I wanted sharp looking Latham and Mattern cards for my second run at the Monster is because I had beautiful versions last time that SGC would not grade because they said a chemical had been used to clean them. So, this time around, I got me some uncleansed versions that are equally beautiful. And I love the images to boot.....

...but as far as mystique goes, the angelic look of the Walter Johnson portrait has always amazed me. The Al Burch Batting with the sun setting behind the church (?) also carries a certain mystique. And for me, why this card was one of the select few that was only issued in the 150 Series further adds to the mystique.
Maybe not mysterious or fascinating, but these two cards certainly make me wonder: 1) Is that a sunset or an out-of-control wildfire behind George Davis? Or is he playing ball in Hell perhaps? 2) What are those two vertical lines below Ed Willetts' elbow supposed to be? (Images from the Old Cardboard site) Steve |
