Introducing ATC 150 Subjects

I thought this was fascinating. From the July 10th 1909 Sporting Life:

I'm floored. Where did you find this?

The sporting life can be found on-line at http://search.la84foundation.org/sea...om=%3CHOME/%3E

Thank you Max!

It is from the online archive Max linked above. Until recently, they didn't have 1909 archived, but now they have 1904 through 1914 and there is a ton of great stuff in there; really worth your time to look through a few issues. As best I can tell, the first add posted above ran 7/3 through 7/24 1909. Then it was followed by this one which ran 8/21 through 9/18. After these Sporting Life stopped advertising the T206 set, probably because they were working on their own to be released in 1910.
Notice who's tucked in on the left :)

Here's one with Wagner.

Whoops, beat me to it.

Interesting that they have the name placement on some of them on the top of the cards.

Anyone see any ads for t205s?

I thought about that as well. I think the name placement at the top was purely for artistic purposes, so the names were visible; especially in the 2nd ad.

I didn't see and wouldn't expect anything about T205s - at that point Sporting Life was well on it's way with it's own M116 offering and wouldn't support the competition.

beat me to the name placement. Very interesring

Matt, wayyy cool! Thanks for sharing your find(s).

Those are great ads. I recall seeing the Wagner ad before. The bottom two ads, of course, are not related to T206s.

For those who are interested, a complete run of the T206 Old Mill ads can be seen here:

As late as September, 1909, Wagner was still in their plans. So when was the card pulled?

And to follow up on Barry's point, if all 150 cards were already inserted as of the first time the ad ran in July (which is what the ad states) then it would seem Wagner was included in packs for 3 months at a minimum...

barrysloate 06-04-2009 09:56 AM

If the Wagner did circulate in packs for three months, and I'm pretty certain it didn't, it wouldn't be much more difficult to find than Elberfeld or G. Brown.

Woah - awesome!

I've added a link to T206.org as of this post:

These were really cool. Barry, I was thinking the same thing when I saw the Wagner, but do we know to assume that they started putting the cards out in January? Or even June? I mean, could it be that the cards started being included in packs in late August?

Maybe when Honus opened his morning paper and saw this add, and realized he hadn't gotten a thing for it, he flipped!

[Edited:] Oops, I didn't read a thing. Matt, just saw your good point. Maybe they changed the add even after they pulled the Wagner? Just to keep kids buying those sweet cigarettes for their favorite player. Or was it really a chase card?

iggyman 06-04-2009 02:43 PM

Fantastic reading. Thanks for the link, Matt!

I found this article about Honus, not that this is any news, but check-out this Wagner quote on the last page of the article....

"Tobacco may shorten a man's life and interfere with his baseball career but I guess it hasn't shortened mine a great deal. I have noticed that where a player starts to quit hitting, it will shorten his career a good deal quicker than tobacco..."
