Image Posting Change

We have just changed the way images can be posted on the forum. You can upload images from your own computer, using the "Attachments" section below the text entry area. Now, when you upload those images, they will display full-size at the bottom of the post instead of as thumbnails. If you have a slow internet connection, you may want to tinker with the value of "posts seen per page" (in your User CP) so that you aren't waiting too long for each page to open. Also, it's possible that we may have to change back to the thumbnail method if this slows down the server too much, but that is unlikely.

As it was, if your image is already online, or you want to embed it in the middle of the post instead of at the end, use the "Insert Image" icon located above the text entry area.

Thanks Matt

much appreciated.

Leon 05-18-2009 10:16 AM

thanks

Matt and I discussed this and we think the large majority (me too) will really like this change. Now you can upload larger images straight to the board WITHOUT having to use a host. In the coming weeks we will be reviewing more things to make the forum the best it can be...Many thanks to Matt for the help....

Remember also.....NOW you can change your posts per thread, that you see on one page, up to 80

We are still reviewing a trader points system for the BST but it's not an easy solution.....

and I am going to stick this thread at top for a few days so more folks will see it....it's a few important changes

does it work?

bmarlowe1 05-18-2009 03:35 PM

It appears that the max jpg file size is 78k - is that right? And if you download a larger file size it is automatically reduced - is that right?

Leon, Matt... all...

I didn't start a thread whining about shortcomings of the new board. I did reply about this place when impressions were solicited. I don't expect perfection, but I do think folks can maintain that as a goal, even though it may never be reached.

With your most recent steps, you guys are treading pretty close to perfection now. So go easy, guys. Pace yourselves. You've about hit a 5 run homer with what you have going now.

Nice images up there, and great improvements to an already fine board. Thank you.

Leon 05-18-2009 03:54 PM

Frank

Thanks so much for the further kind words. We are trying.

Mark- Yes the limit is 78k and your scan will be adjusted to that amount if it is too large. We believe this is a very good limit but it is open for debate. Most of my really nice scans are 50k or less as a jpg. Folks do need to understand that different kinds of files will be larger or smaller.....For me .jpgs work best. best regards

bmarlowe1 05-18-2009 04:22 PM

No problem Leon - just wanted to be sure I understood. Of course one can use Photobucket for higher res images if desired.

OK. For those of you of faint disposition or weak hearts, get your smelling salts and nitro ready for this one.

I've been keeping an eye on the picture-posting threads and agreeing that we really lost something with no direct posting from hard drive capability. The thumbnails just didn't get it.

And I've been thinking (and now regret not posting before it was changed) that if there was any way possible to post pictures directly, Matt would figure it out. And he has. Thanks very much to Matt for that.

And on a similar note, anyone that hasn't been in the new chat room yet is really missing something. The night REA closed was just so damn cool. Between the REA "recent bids" screen and the awesome new chat room, it was a new page turned in watching auctions closed.

The chat room was also Matt's doing, and many thanks for that as well.

J

Joann - you're more then welcome. We appreciate all the constructive feedback since it lets us know what we should look to improve. We actually knew about this capability before we launched but wary of the performance nightmare we had last time, Leon made the call to err on the side of speed to start things off and use the thumbnails. We now rolled out the changes of allowing 80 posts per page and full size images as we have a good baseline for the forum's performance and should be able to tell if that bogs things down at all (so far so good).

Frank - I know you weren't complaining - it was that kind of specific constructive feedback that helped (I contrast this with helpful comments such as "The new forum is crap").

If anyone else has anything constructive to add, please post or PM myself or Leon and we'll see if (within reason) we can make it happen. I'd still like to know what the 20+ folks who liked the old forum better would like to see.

Doug 05-18-2009 06:35 PM

For anyone unable to locate the button to click to upload your image as an attachment - you want the "Manage Attachments" button seen here, which is located under the box where you type your text:
http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/639...ttachments.jpg

Also, we set up a test forum for everyone to use when trying out different features of the forum - go here and play around with clicking on different buttons and see how your posts look:

nope*.

*In theory, if we upload so much stuff that we outgrow an appropriate amount of disk space for a forum our size, and at that time we elect not to spring for more space, then we may need to delete some of them.
