International Shipping Question (Ok -- "just" to Canada ...)
 

What should I charge to send a graded card ("value" about U.S. $200-300 ) to Canada (assume weight of 4-5 ounces)....
I'm not interested in making a big profit on shipping and handling but I certainly don't want to lose money and and I want to protect myself for eBay/Paypal purposes also I like to at least offer insurance...

1st class international is about $3.00 without insurance. You can send Priority for about $10.00 without insurance. Priority gives you $70.00 insurance, you would have to buy the rest.

Canada is generally ok, but they can get hit with huge import taxes. Personally whenever I ship anything over $50 outside the US I require insurance. I just had $500 worth of stuff vanish in the UK as some postal worker stole the stuff out of the mailer.

You can use a flat rate priority mailer which should be about $13 or so, insurance is extra and would be another few dollars.

If you want to protect yourself then you need to be use Global Express.It will provide a tracking number.Unfortunately it will run about $26.

There are no "huge import taxes" on importing baseball cards into Canada. The taxes that are collectible on importation are the same as if the purchaser had bought the cards in Canada. For example, in British Columibia, taxes of 5% GST and 7% PST are collectible, just as if the card was purchased in Canada. Next door, Alberta has no PST, so just the GST is collected. Any item sent through the mail with a value of under $20 has no tax collected, and in practice, Canada Post will often not collect the tax on items where the declared value is hgher than $20 (given that it is not economical to collect say $2.60 tax on a $50 item)

Just be very careful when purchasing international insurance through the USPS. For example, if you mail the package via Registered Mail, read the back of your receipt, which states something to the effect that international indemnity is limited. Thus, I belive that if you insure a package sent to an international location and the package is subsequently lost or damaged, your full insurance amount might not be reimburasble to you.

Also, be sure not to send it via FedEx, as their declared value amount does not act as insurance for sports collectibles.
