Card types you haven't seen at auction in 3+ years....
 

What card types have you not seen at auction in 3 plus years? I'm gonna assume we can put a Fan cigarette card on that list....what else? Would also be great to see some scans anyone has of some of these real tough types....

The one that comes immediately to mind for me is T208 Fireside.

1977 Esso Coin Montanez (really...not seen one in at least 10 years)
1939 Father and Son Shoes (there might have been one a few years ago on ebay but do not remember any others in awhile).
1949 Olmes Studio Postcard Roberts
1915 T-214 Victory Magee
1912 T-215 Pirate Doolan (both poses)
1937 Wheaties small box Camilli (series 14)


Oh yeah...some T-unc Fan Cigarette card has not been up for auction in quite awhile :)

The 1888 M117 Sporting Times is one of the rarest of the rare issues, and you only once every few years seem them in auction. You see Fatima Premiums and Lone Jacks many times over for each time you see Sporting Times. You even see more Just Sos and Four Base Hits. Part of the reason for the reclusiveness is the rarity and part is due to obscurity. The Sporting Times is a well kept secret, out of mind of most collectors. The Just Sos and Four Base Hits, on the other hand, are rare but famously rare-- they have celebrity. If an auction house says they have a Just So in their upcoming auction, that means something to collectors. If the auction says they have a Sporting Times, most of the same collectors will say, "What's that?"

It does make me wonder what one of those e222's would bring in REA. :eek:

I better clarify....I have never seen an AWA backed E222 for sale because this is the only one known. As for E222's David Levin won 4 off of ebay, and paid a pretty strong price for them, about 3-4 years ago. I think Dan S got a few of those eventually. There was one of these E222/AWH's on ebay about 5 yrs ago and it didn't meet the $1200 opening bid...and I bought it after the auction closed. I think one would be in the 4k-5k range if it came up in auction today. The value still hasn't caught up to the rarity because these are so rare not many folks really collect them....It's hard to see some common caramels, even in a 7-8 holder, go for more than these....but it's the demand side doing the valuation...imo...:cool:

ps....and here is an M117 I still own that David is mentioning....they are super rare too...

Joshua - There was a G&B Buffington in the 2006 REA auction.

Dave - The last Western Playground I saw was a Peckinpaugh that was on eBay within the last 2 years.

It has been a while since I have seen a California League Old Judge auctioned.

The 1932 NY Giants Schedule Postcards that I have chased for years. There was a lot in REA in 2005 and one in the Lipsett auction this year. In between, nada.

(Of course, the thin Hubbell is readily available, but nothing else.)

Not cards per se but I haven't seen any Stenzel's Rooter Button's on the market at all in the last 3-4 years or so. There are generally only 1-2 known examples of each of the players in the set.

What would those typically go for? (I know a bit vague if none have sold recently)

Dave, honestly, I haven't a clue. I would guess $500-1250 or so each, but could be high or low.

I have a friend, mutual friend of Teds, that has a lot of Tuxedo's I've never seen before and appear to be uncatalogued. The best part is they're all HOFers (Matty, Lajoie can't remember the others) with the exception of Zimmerman. There are a few non sports also. Don't know if it qualifies, but I've not seen their exact type come up for auction or private sell ever. I have a photo I took with my phone of the cards. It's very poor, but if interested or applicable to this post I'll post it.

Are they similar to the Tuxedo broadsides and posters? I would love to see them.

They are 1912 Tuxedo's. There are 6 players and 5 are HOFers (Matty, Lajoie, Jennings, Walsh, McGraw) and Zimmy.

Interesting, they seem to be the same design as the advertisements of the day. Here is one : Tuxedo Ad featuring Johnson. I would like to see them in hand as I have never heard of them before.

I don't remember the last time I've seen a T207 Red Cross come up for sale.

I'm pretty good at blocking out auctions I can't afford though.

I believe those Tuxedos are all hand-made creations. I recall a thread on the old board discussing these. I think a lot were sold at a Cooperstown, NY show.

Someone on the board turned up a very beat up T207 Red Cross and it sold in a Mastro Auction (I believe) about 2-3 yrs ago for around 5k.....it was poor minus on condition....I think this is one of the rarest backs of any mainstream set....I remember I had to sell a Kbats team card and Wright N172 in order to afford this one...about 7? yrs ago....

A T200 Premium sold in a Mastro Auction about a yr ago....I forget which team but it was mounted and framed....

Recent Heritage auction had a T200 Premium Red Sox. Sold for $1100 plus vig.

Sorry for the late response. I don't have the expertise that many on this board have, but I'm fairly certain they're not pasted because the black on the cards can be seen on the edges as if it runs through the entire stock. The individual curving on all cards would seem to suggest that they were not cut from the same box. That is not a lot of support to suggest they're cards though either, just an observation. I stacked them and they were all the same size, including the non-sports ones so they were cut well. Here's the kicker.........this is a dealer out of Cooperstown where the previous thread stated the cards to have been from so I'd say these are the same card discussed on this board and the asking price is still $50K. Too bad because they're cool. The seller is a friend and I've always had honest and good dealings with him and don't believe he's attempting to pass them off as something they're not, but maybe just too hopeful. There was one argument he posed that one of the six HOFers had a different pose on the "card" than the advertisement. Bottom line is you'd have to see for yourself.

I think they look a whole lot like a card because the back advertisement for Tuxedo on them would suggest it was not cut from an advertisement piece, unless the advertisement was intended to be cut. Then the question becomes does that make them a "card" or not.

Should I discuss this thread with him? I don't want his reputation at risk seeing as he has them for sale.
