Mission Accomplished! Addie Joss Memorial Game Collection
About a year ago I set out on a project of getting a card of every player who participated in the Addie Joss memorial All-Star game in 1911. The idea evolved into a wall display, with the famous panoramic image on top and then the card of each player matted underneath where they were standing (two for Jack Graney, of course). Not including the mascot, 38 players/managers are in the photo; 37 of which have cards.
As I spoke to the framer, it became clear that the only way this would make sense is if the card for each player was as narrow as possible (i.e. using a T206 instead of a CJ), and even then, the display would be 7 feet wide; this of course made the search for cards more of a challenge. Last week a group of 3 of us won the M116 lot in Legendary which landed me the last card I needed for completion - the Cy Falkenberg. I expected some of the Zeenuts and T210s to be more difficult but I had all of those a few moths ago and am thrilled to finally be complete. I know a few of you were wondering where I was on this project, so I just wanted to update things. |
Congratulations Matt.

That was really a cool idea for a project, congratulations on finishing it!
|
Awesome. I'd like to see some completed pictures at some point. I'm already inspired to start a new project.
|
Nice work, Matt. Can't wait to see the finished product!
|
Wish I could be as patient. Great work Matt. I bought the Visiting team photo once, but of course it was counterfeit.
|
Which guy didn't have a card?
|
Thanks guys! It's been a fun project!

For the display, I was able to procure the following image from his University. It's cropped from his yearbook photo, but will have to work. http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/3646/apmillsct6.jpg |
Nice going Matt !
Cool angle -

hey matt that was a cool idea, congrats on your quest...post some pics when you can:D
|
Very nice...can't wait to see the final framed piece.

Outstanding
Matt, very cool project, and thanks for sharing the photo - I don't recall seeing it before.
1) May I comment on the photo? I would like to share a hypothesis that I am formulating, and it is still in its embryonic stages: extremely talented (HOFer) baseball players ahve incredibly large heads! - check out WaJo, and Lajoie is downright comical!!! 2) If you picked up any offgrade Cubs dupes in that lot, I would be interested in a few, maybe...congrats on the win. 3) very cool project, byt he way, please share the photo of the finished framed piece when its done |
Matt,
great idea for a collection ! Would love to see the finished display when completed. |
That's an awesome panoramic picture. Is that Cobb in a Cleveland uniform towards the right side of the picture? This is a cool project. Are you using the T205 Joss card in the display?

I've spoken with the framer about how best to incorporate the T205 Joss - I didn't want it in the frame because then you wouldn't be able to see the back. I think what we're going to do is have a little holster on the edge of the frame which the T205 can sit in (in its SGC case), but also be removed and looked at. Once I get the lot from Legendary I'll take everything to him and from that point, I don't know how long he wants. I'll certainly post pics when it's all done. |
Congrats on completion, Matt. Sounds like an amazing project. Looking forward to pics!
|
Matt,
Awesome and congrats! I did not realize the Falkie from the M116 set was the last card you needed for the project. It all makes sense now and I was happy to partner with you on the winning lot. I cannot wait to see the finished display. Regards, Michael |
Matt --That is great --congratulations ---just curious --which T210 cards did you use?
|
Awesome idea, and congratulations on it's completion. Can't wait to see the finished product.

I came across the 1911 group photo today in Kansas City. I've long been fascinated by the story of this game and remembered your post from several years ago. Would love to see it if you were able to get it done! |
Unique Idea
Matt, Congrats on your project. I love the collecting projects that center around ideas or events instead of just a regular set from a specific company. As others have stated, can't wait to see some pics.

Matt started a separate thread when this was completed - I remember it well. Here's the link to the awesome pics!
