Uncat Cincinnati Reds issue from 1970?

Posted By: David Davis
Hi,
Can anyone help identify these cards? I believe they are from 1969-1970, and they measure 5 7/16" x 3 9/16". Glossy fronts with a cardboard stock. I could not find them in the 2008 Standard Catalog.

Thanks for any help.

David

Posted By: Bob
I'm pretty sure those were the postcards that were given away at various stores in the Cincinnati area (Shillito's, Kenwood Plaza). They might be in the big SCD under Shillito's.

Posted By: David Davis
Thanks Bob. I looked up Shillito's and there is no set for the period between 1959 and 1973. These cards are also blank backed.

Posted By: bobw
They look like team issued postcards the team sent out. I have a Leo Cardenas postcard that came with the team envelope, souvenier list and pocket schedule

Posted By: Todd Schultz
although the Bench looks like the same photo used in one of his Partridge Meats cards, but if Cardenas is in the set and they are from the same year, then it should pin it down to 1968, as that was the only full season Chico and Bench were teammates (you probably knew that).

Posted By: DD
Thanks; I didn't know that, but it is good news. If they are a team issue, the same as the Cardenas, then the Bench is a rookie card.

Posted By: Bob
[Information courtesy of mcholke from CU]

The postcards are 1969 Reds team issued postcards. The Perez has two versions from 1969 (one larger signature and the other one being shown is the smaller name version). Here they are in slabs.

Posted By: Todd Schultz
I looked in a Beckett Big Book I bought a few years ago, which has a lot of these more obscure team issued sets. Yours are from 1969 David, and there are 28 in the set, which Beckett values at $100 in nm, with commons at $3, Perez at $8, and Bench and Rose at $15.

Beckett shows these Reds sets for 1967 through 1971. Cardenas is in the 1967 and 1968 sets, which are distinguishable by their blue facsimile autos. Interestingly, Bench is listed in the '67 set, which would make that earlier than his Topps rookie, and which would indicate that at least part of the set may have been issued later in the year, as he played in only a couple dozen games, as a late season call-up I believe.
