Changing hosts from Net54 to......??

Posted By: leon
Hey Ya'll,
I have seen a few comments about Network54 hosting and the limitations we have with our forums. I have been looking around quite a bit this morning and have seen a few other possibilities. We might have some issues if we do that....mainly the archived information being rolled over to the new site. I still like the format of the way we do things here as opposed to other sites I have seen. What we have is the best audience of vintage baseball card guys/gals in the hobby and a place where almost everyone feels comfortable posting. If we do move I expect everyone to have the same feelings about posting. The rules would certainly stay the same. Network54 does what we need, and we all know it well, but it doesn't have the bells and whistles I have seen on other sites and is somewhat Plain Jane....

http://www.freecenter.com/forums.html

I/we are open to suggestions on better sites to do what we are doing....

NOTHING is going to happen over night so no need to worry about that. There is a chance that there will be BIG issues as to why we can't do it but I don't want folks to think we aren't always thinking with respect to improving our forum. The members are certainly what makes this site great. The venue we use is somewhat secondary but it would be nice to get a shiny new model that would give us more options when posting...
....regards

ps...from my limited research I don't see the term "Net54" trademarked so I think even if we move we can keep our name....it won't be "network54" though as that is trademarked....

Posted By: leon
There is nothing broken on Network54. The issue is that we have an older software that will not do things other sites do. I know Max W recently has said he thought we should be able to do more things....ie...post counters, more areas for pictures, bigger avatars, and more individual reporting....

It's not mandatory that we change by any means. I am happy with what we have but I am taking a pulse on what others think. If lots of folks think we need an upgrade then it's our duties as moderators to think about it.... That is all....I like "easy" too and Network54 is easy.....again, just soliciting feedback....regards

Solution here is to educate more people on the use of PhotoBucket. It's free and easy. Plus your pics will last forever.

"bigger avatars"....From my observation most posters don't even use them. Just we egotists

"more individual reporting"....I have no clue what this means.

I wouldn't expect any changes for at least a month AFTER/IF we make a decision to move. NO decision has been made to change. Again, the most important thing is our members....Period....I am only thinking there could be better hosts out there....

Posted By: Joann
This board is just fine Leon. I understand what you are saying in that it is a bit old skool on the technology front. Still, for familiarity and recognition and archives and who all knows what else, it's probably not worth it to move just for the sake of a few bells and whistles.

It'd be nice to have the pictures not disappear or blocking posts or favorites or sticky threads or whatever, but I don't think that lack of these items drives people away. They're like the odd little idiosyncracies you like about your old car or a good friend - no problemo. A lot of what you and Brian have done by adding archives and an info area make up for a lot of that. A major upheaval and losses of who knows what history-wise and continunity-wise would not be worth adding the doo-dads at this point.

So don't worry about the format - worry about the content and keeping it in depth and expert and friendly and helpful and broad and deep and interesting and full of great scans and ... and generally jus' keep patrolling the borders!

J

BTW - I really don't like that photos disappear after a week, but I've honestly tried to use both image shack and photobucket, and for some reason I just can't seem to get them to work. This despite some very clear and detailed instructions that have been posted in the past. Not sure what my problem is, but I can't get them to work.

Posted By: DMcD
For 99 cents a month Net54 has a "Select Account" option which allows storage of 20 MB of data. That's good for several hundred pictures that will stay up indefinitely (no dirty comments please, there's gentlemen present). Only drawback near as I can tell is that when you post it will say "Select Login" plus your login name which tends to bump the left margin over and might impair easy scrolling. Otherwise it has worked out fine for me.

-

I was just defending Full Count as to the point you made of threads not coming up on certain news relating to PSA or Forman Mantle card. If both forums had the same topics all the time then it would make no sense having more than one forum.

Like i said, Full Count is 2+ months old and it will take time. If members/moderators are disliked on Full count then so be it, the world is not a perfect place. There are many guys over there that love collecting and talking about vintage cards.
