RCMcKenzie 06-24-2022 02:10 PM

I had to look up the Ruth postcard to see what it was. When I saw the two for sale on ebay, I recognized the image, but I hadn't known what it was called until yesterday. I've known about the Goudey since about 1974. Take it with a grain of salt.

1933 Goudey Ruth #144 or 1921 Exhibit Ruth?

Watching this 1921 E121 PSA 3 Ruth at Goldin ending tonight really makes the 21 Exhibit seem cheap relatively speaking. Granted the E121 is an iconic pose and lower pop but not sure it warrants more than double what a PSA 3 Exhibit goes for. Prob will be triple if not more when the auction is over.

I have made some bad buys in the past, but I was lucky enough to grab a "Babe Ruth" e121 psa 1 before Elvis left the building. I was hoping to grab the bird and montage one day, those used to be very reasonable, maybe they still are.

Did anyone see what the psa 4 Babe and Bird sold for in Goldin tonight

RCMcKenzie 06-25-2022 10:03 PM

I just looked. $15,000 with the juice. "Babe" sold for $50,000.

tkd 06-25-2022 10:12 PM

Thanks for sending those over. Looks like Babe holding Bird is getting more attention. I think people like those early Ruth caramel cards. Plus a psa 4 doesn't come around often.

RCMcKenzie 06-25-2022 10:20 PM

I agree. The holding bird was only at 7000 when I commented earlier about it. It was a nice card. I'm looking for the lower grade examples. He had a low grade Montage in February that I should have bought. I was right there, I just didn't make the bid. Always a next time.

Exhibitman 06-26-2022 09:51 AM

They're all getting up there. A PC Back Exhibit Ruth portrait in a 5 went for $33K+ earlier this month. That's some serious respect.

MattyC 06-27-2022 02:00 PM

I'll go with the #144 because I love those pinstripes against the colorful background and I am not a fan of oversized cards. Also, if a possible future sale is a consideration, the Goudey is on more want lists and thus likely more readily liquid. In the end, as many have said, one cannot go wrong; it all comes down to personal preference and it is always splitting hairs to some degree when choosing among Ruths, Mantles, Cobbs, any blue chip super desirable pieces.

Touch'EmAll 06-27-2022 03:24 PM

Exhibitman - I missed it but am curious as to the Exhibit Ruth Portrait 5 grade to which you refer. Are you talking the 1926-29 Exhibit Postcard, Pose (holding bat) ? Or other? And which recent auction ? Thanks.

Wow hadnít seen that pose exhibit sale from goldin. A grade 1 just went for 9600 in heritage too!

I've been collecting for a very long time and it's always been the 33 Goudey 144. I didn't even know about the 21 until I read this post. There are so many random 20's cards of Ruth, but the Goudey is seared into peoples minds much like the 52 Mantle, 79 Gretzky, 86 Jordan, 89 Griffey, etc. I only bought mine because I love the card and the image, it's iconic and beautiful and my personal grail card. Best of luck on your journey. Trust your gut.

That one was a vg-ex looking card with a pinhole. But still, I never imagined that sort of valuation years ago when I was buying them. I guess I should have loaded up on as many as I could when they were $500 cards...

robertsmithnocure 07-02-2022 10:51 AM

I am usually partial to batting poses of hitters, but this fielding pose of Ruth is just perfect to me. The photographer caught him in a classic stance that wonderfully captures Ruth in his earliest days with the Yankees.

The Conlon batting pose is obviously a classic, but I have always thought that it looked too posed to me and I think that there are better batting images of Ruth that exist.

Been inactive for a while but was such a tempting question, had to put in my 2c.

People hang up over the pop differences between his more plentiful house y issues and his 1920 b&w issues. The 1920 issues definitely have rarity appeal, but in terms of appeal, imo, nothing matches the 1933 issues and his 144 is probably the best looking from 33 goudey given his full figure batting portrait.

I get the fraction pop difference. But the pop for his 144 issue is small relative to demand and I would believe given the accessibility, aesthetics and popularity of his 33 issues, you definitely canít go wrong with it. Or with any of his issues.

Imagine if they made a 1915 Cracker Jack of ruth! That would be king!

investinrookies 07-05-2022 05:25 PM

Will have to put a nice 144 or 1921 exhibit on hold for now. I stumbled across and have the chance to get a very nice 1925 champions exhibit ruth that I like much more. Very scarce and that batting pose is classic Ruth. Forgot it even existed to be honest and glad it was presented to me. Nearly impossible card.

Great card!! Get one if you can. Here is what it looks like for those not familiar. Itís a multi sport issue, which makes it a bit of an odd bird. Very tough to find

Wow nice example there! As you said itís very tough to find which makes it his rarest exhibit issue by far, which is another reason I like it.

I believe that his 1923 Exhibit is tougher.

That is true. I also rank the 1922 Eastern Exhibit, the 1926 and this 1931-32 movie issue as tougher than the 1925 Champions among single subject Ruth cards

https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...-32%20Ruth.jpg

If you go to 4 on 1, this one is harder too

This is more rare than the 1925 Champions? (thanks Peter)

Even if it is technically more rare, its a common pose and so it doesn't feel as rare

There's no comparison between the 21 Exhibits and the 22 EE IMHO. One is a flat pose of him leaning on his bat presenting a ball, the other is a dynamic pose in the outfield ready to receive the ball. B&W > Sepia too. I don't care how "rare" it is but I'm an image collector so it's 21 Exhibits for me all the way.

Iíd say a total PSA pop of 17 is pretty rare. Maybe I was wrong with it being the most scarce exhibit issue but it is rare for sure

Ended at $12,132. The same exact card sold in REA in April of 2021 for $7800. A $4,332 increase- 55.5%- in 14 months, is impressive. How has the stock market done in the last 14 months?!

Meanwhile, the PSA 10 1986 Fleer Jordan closed at $204,000. Thatís tied with one in Goldin last month for the lowest sale in 2022, down from a 2022 peak of $360,000 in January, and down from $450k in April of 2021.

Ruth Champions Exhibit is up 55.5% in 14 months, while 1986 Jordan PSA 10s are down 54% over the same time period. HmmmÖ..

Ruth and some others definitely bucking the market trend. The 21 exhibit of Ruth finished very strong as well nearly 9k for a PSA 1. Wow

Those were nice looking cards; glad to see collectors are buying the card raterh than the holder. The poor condition 1928, which looked like a 1 card, went for $3,012. To me that's even more impressive.

pawpawdiv9 07-17-2022 09:23 AM

I was exploring the ideal of going Ruth, but tried to go under radar on the 1925 W504 toy novelty Yankess card (Gehrig RC) with Ruth
Nevertheless, i just placed a bid and went to sleep and got nabbed in extended bidding.
Didnt know this item existed. Maybe someone here got it.
I viewed the whole Goldin prices the other day, as mentioned the Jordan card may be experiencing a adjustment to the 85 Star card grading opening back up, thus making it the RC to have.
Hate to hear what prices are at the Nationals.

those w504's are pretty scarce.

must be Pete--- i went to sleep at 6pm EST and it was at 1500 or so (me as high bid)
things got crazy near the 10 pm close time. Can't believe it went for 5K+ WOW! and it was just the top card portion, not the whole thing.
But i been told if i see something unique like that to bid on it! Most likely i wont see another in a long time.
As far the Exhibits cards, i never really bit the bullet on these things. I guess its more a post card thing and oversized. I missed the boat on the Gehrig of course. I had 707sportscards on Ebay and had offer near the 4k price he had on Ebay. Still look back on it.
Dont get me wrong guys, i do like the images of Ruth as well. More in favor of the batting pose. And always loved the red Goudey too!

Every once in a while an item will slip through the cracks for me. The 1925 Novelty Yankees team yesterday sure slipped through. I somehow missed it. Anyway, congrats to whoever won it.

Sorry that was me on both the 1928 Ruth and the 1925 Ruth.

I paid up to get what I wanted/needed for my collection. I thought the prices were a bit strong but it is Ruth But it is what the market wanted because I know several other bidders were bidding with me until I was the lucky one

I liked the look, I liked the rarity, it helps my goal of trying to get 1 card from each year Ruth played(working on the 20's now), and I like the poses.

Rhotchkiss 07-18-2022 06:44 AM

Nice pick ups Jeff! Now I see the full picture - you get 3 Ruthís, I get a rare Wagner, and Goldin/Consignor are happy. I like our deal even better now. Well done!

Congrats Jeff, I was in strong on the e121 ball in hand from Goldin, hated to lose it but I unfortunately came in second on that one. Beautiful cards!
