Oh No! Not another T206 Question!
 

What is up with the pink background on this T206 Phelps??? I bid, but my heart wasn't into it, thus ended up as a bridesmaid. Was this caused by fading???

there are many of these cards out there from the same source. The pink is from a chemical. It is not a printing flaw.

Sorry guys, but I don't agree. The Phelps card is a printing flaw. Here are some of my similar printing flaws......

Maybe those other T206's are whatever....however, the cards I have shown here were all glued in an album for 80+ years when I acquired them.

Therefore, they were not "soaked", or subject to "fading", or affected by "chemicals". They are simply....printing flaws. I have quite a few more cards
from various other sets that have similar printing flaws (i.e., missing an ink pass in the multi-color printing process).

As someone who has done a fair amount of printing in my life, I am with Ted Z...I think something was laying on the plate on one of the color passes. Closer examination may persuade me differently. OTOH, I can't see why anyone would pay a premium for them....

I also feel it is not a chemical stain, if it were a stain I beleive not only the background would be discolored but the so would the player pose. also if it were a chemical stain wouldn't it soak throught o the reverse and discolor the ink there?

Pink stain that did soak through, I am not convinced that most are printer errors but simply effects of their environment over the 100 years.

ted, If those were in a closed album. Is it possible the adhesives vapors reacted with some of the inks, ie; off-gasing?

Very light adhesive smears are on their rears. Therefore, I don't think that the fronts of these cards were changed by any "gaseous" type of effect. If so,
I would expect that you'd be able to smell an odor......these T206's are odor-free. Tell me Steve..why is most everyone here so quick to dismiss "printing
flaws" ?

Here are an eclectic bunch of cards that (in my opinion) are simply missing an ink pass in the multi-colored printing process. I have many more of these
printing flaws in my odd-ball collection; however, I thought this would be a good start to illustrate the point I'm trying to make.

Furthermore, notice how the color integrity has been retained in the front images, although these 1888 Goodwin's were glued in an album for 100+ years.
Steve....I acquired this complete set (50 cards) back in 1990 not too far north of you in New Hampshire. They were an original find that was passed thru
several generations in the same family.

First Ted, Not all are skeptics here. Just some of us.

Sometime ago, there was crafty fellow here that was able to pass of various altered items from TPGs. It's items like those that cause us to think "guilty til proven innocent". Sadly, this attitude has become the norm in today's hobby out of necessity.

I hope I didn't come off as accusatory. You certainly know more about this kinda stuff. I am merely looking to learn. Steve

No, problem....your question was as good as any other here. I'm beginning to think that I've been in this hobby too long.
It is not a fun hobby when a certain type of "paranoia" sets in. Was it trimmed.....was it soaked.....or, whatever type of
alteration has a card been subjected to ?

Sometimes, I yearn for those days (circa 1980) when an Ex raw T206 common sold for $5. Or, a T206 red Cobb could be
acquired for $15.
There was really none of this "paranoia" in this hobby going on. Certainly, not to the extent that is prevalent nowadays.

Pink stain
 

A few years ago I bought a bunch of T206's that were glued to an old calendar from 1910. Since some were in poor shape anyways, I tried some different chemicals to soak them off of the backboard and remove the glue residue. One card with a yellow-orange background turned pink similar to the samples you guys are showing in your scans. The one I had, the colors of the player and his uniform weren't affected, only the background color.

I've also seen some cards where they had been glued in an album and the glue had affected the color right through the card to the front.
