The *Official Net54 Music Thread*

SO much can be said about a person from their music preferences.
I was born/raised a Zeppelin fan .... there was no getting around it.
I am a classic rock junkie that grew into the Grateful Dead .... and after Jerry died I fell in love with Phish and Dave Matthews.

These days I am all about some Dave. If the ticket stubs were worth money I'd be a millionaire. I have quite a collection of Dave stubs/pics......

who gets your gizzard?

What do you groove to??

Even After Jerry

Still a Dead Head....but I like all kinds of music.

I grew up playing Led Zep, but in my spare time I liked to listen to the other side of the coin.

jandr272 01-29-2013 11:30 AM

I listen to mostly everything that isn't too recent. I'm a big Jazz fan, especially of Hampton Hawes. Music is like sports with me, all the guys I really admire were way before my time and I never got/will get to see them perform.

drc 01-29-2013 12:27 PM

I have a very wide range of musical likes, and enjoy trying new music. I've had an allergy to Top 40 radio music since I was a teenager. Favorite genres include:

Traditional classical : Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Samuel Barber, Handel. I have season tickets to the Seattle Symphony.

Avante guard classical : Gyorgi Ligeti, Anton Webern, Alban Berg, Krzysztof Penderecki

1980s alternative rock : The Psychedelic Furs (my favorite band), The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Bauhaus, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Hardcore Punk: Discharge, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat

Extreme Metal: Sunn 0))), Celtic Frost, Electric Wizard

Other: Roxy Music/Brian Ferry, Cliff Martinez (modern movie soundtrack composer)

Of the above Ligeti, Penderecki and Sunn 0))) are the most challenging-- very different than traditional or 'normal' music.

Remember when I added my comments about the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame elections? Now you have an idea of my point of view.

** Sample below of Sunn 0))) if you want to know what extreme metal sounds like:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOyvQEQYFLY

** Sample below of Gyorgi Ligeti, avante guard classical composer from Hungary. One of director Stanley Kubrick's favorites. Amazingly, this piece is played by a life classical orchestra:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aI0P1NnUFxc

** Sample of Discharge, legendary underground band from England that produced some of the loudest music on the planet. "Hurricane Wall of Sound" is how one early critic described their sound. All their very short songs (hardcore punk songs are usually short, sometimes under a minute) are traditional British protests songs but communicated in a sonically 'scorched earth' way:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rk9v6AM1hUk

** And last, but least, a much more accessible wall of sound 'pop' song from the wonderful British band The Psychedelic Furs. The singer, Richard Butler, has one of the most distinct voices in rock. Hoarse, flat yet melodic-- well demonstrated in this song. One of my favorite bands since I was 15.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfwidISjX2c

P.s. I wasn't trying to convert anyone to Sunn 0))) or Discharge, but I wasn't attempting to post to stuff (or type of stuff) you've heard 100 times before. I'm sure you all already now what Lovely Rita Meter Maid sounds like (a song that I like, by the way).

steve B 01-29-2013 03:07 PM

Hendrix
Black Sabbath
White Zombie

I like a bunch of stuff, but those are probably my three favorites.

The rest comes down to individual songs, although I'm partial to later Beatles, and most stuff from say 67-70.

Steve B

39special 01-29-2013 03:10 PM

I'm a huge Rolling Stones fan.I listen to a classic rock sation all day at work.
Some new stuff also.(Offspring,Linkin Park) stuff like that.

toppcat 01-29-2013 08:57 PM

Melodic Hardcore Punk and alt.Americana are my two favorite genres. Bad Religion and Leatherface i.r.o. the former and Two Cow Garage and Lucero re the latter pretty much sums it up. I like a lot of other stuff too but that's what really does it for me.

E93 01-29-2013 11:24 PM

I have pretty eclectic tastes. Some examples:

Grateful Dead
Tom Waits
Laurie Anderson
Tom Russel
The Jam
X
The Specials
Jazz - especially avant garde/outside and bebop
Led Zeppelin
Peter Case
Sonic Youth
Opal
Rolling Stones
The Selecter
Dave Alvin
Thelonious Monster

JimB

tiger8mush 01-31-2013 07:46 AM

Slightly Stoopid and Rise Against are my top two favorites, I see them in concert as often as possible.

Others include Strung Out, Anti-Flag, Swingin' Utters, Good Riddance, and Rancid.

But I'll listen to almost anything as long as its not Justin Bieber haha

Great thread !!!

Love the Zappa video.....I like all kinds of music~ mostly what I grew up with. Classic rock, metal, hardcore punk, etc. I've even seen the Grateful Dead :D (been to more Dead shows than I've seen them play-the parking lot was usually a true place of American freedom :D).

I guess I choose what to listen to by whatever mood I'm in.

You and my wife have the same play list! I'm a child of the R&B 70s. I still listen to Al Green, The Staple Singers, Curtis Mayfield, Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder,EWF, and Sly. I really miss that kind of music. Hearing it brings back great memories of playing whiffle ball with my dad in the back yard and watching my mom dance around the house as she cleaned while listening to it. I miss her as well.

Pink, Black and colors of the Rainbow!

Pink Floyd (not Syd Barrett years, but more later years w/Gilmour taking the lead)

Black Sabbath (Ozzie and Dio, none of the other pretenders)

Blue Oyster Cult (toured with Sabbath, what a show!)

Rainbow (Rising is not only the greatest album cover art, but RJD shows why he is the Rock God of vocalists and Cozy Powell absolutely kills the drum kit!)

Sister Hazel (definitely not the same genre as above, but these guys are fantastic!....i recommend Fortress)

Toad the Wet Sprocket (what, no reference to a color in the name? ....talented band whose silly name morphed my silly user name...listen to Coil and be an instant fan)

Jim Croce ( every song, every chord, every lyric was pure GOLD)

True that! I didn't know you had a little "Dead" in ya :p

Do you get into Dave Matthews at all?

I didn't film this, but I was on the lawn for this one. One of may favorites. It "speaks" to me.

"Celebrate we will ..... because life is short but sweet for certain"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovLO29malzA

"Two Step"

Hey, my love, I came to you with
best intentions
You laid down and gave to me just
what I'm seeking
Love , you drive me to distraction

Hey my love do you believe that we
might last a thousand years
Or more if not for this,
our flesh and blood
It ties you and me right up
Tie me down

Celebrate we will
Because life is short but sweet for
certain
We're climbing two by two
To be sure these days continue
These things we cannot change

Hey , my love, your can to me like
wine comes to this mouth
Grown tired of water all the time
You quench my heart and you
quench my mind

Celebrate we will
Because life is short but
sweet for certain
We''re climbing two by two
To be sure these days continue
The things we cannot

Celebrate , you and me ,climbing
two by two ,to be sure
these days continue , these things we
cannot change

Oh , my love I came to you
with best intentions
You laid down down and gave to me
just what I'm seeking

Celebrate we will
Because life is short
But sweet for certain
We're climbing two by two
to be sure these days continue
Things we cannot change...
Things we cannot change

Dead

Hi Steve-

Yeah, I can't say I'm a Dead Head but I do like quite a few of their songs...this one is probably one of my favorites:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XacvydVrhuI

Haven't really gotten into Dave Matthews much, but that was a cool clip you posted, and awesome lyrics.

Funny thing is, the Dead used to play quite a bit at the Oakland Coliseum and we'd go and spend the day wandering around the parking lot :D. I'd always wonder why they had so huge of a following, and that people would literally follow them across the country. I finally WENT IN to the concert :p at a show at the Mountain View Ampitheatre and understood the following. Experiencing the Grateful Dead live was quite the treat  Space was a "unique" event.......:D

EK- cool song, thanks for posting that.

Also, LOVE Black Sabbath with both Ozzy & Dio.

Great thread everyone, look forward to more posts-

Sincerely, Clayton

Hey Steve

Check this one out. I was at this concert, it was a free concert in the Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, in memorial for the concert promoter Bill Graham who had passed away. It was an excellent day, many of the bands he promoted over the decades played, it was quite an experience. :)

Great song Steve, you may turn me into a fan yet :)

It helped with the lyrics, great songwriter. And, very positive. Feel good music :D

I must be bi-polar, because I also listen to a lot of aggresive, negative toned, "angry music" :D:p as well. I guess it's all about the mood.

Thanks for turning me on to The Dave Matthews Band :)

Dave is all that is good about music these days. Aggro, calm, scientific, new age, classic, ground breaking, tribute, everything.

There is a Dave song/show for every mood and that is what drives me to his band. If you are pissed off you can find a song that matches your mood .... if you are happy you can find a version OF THE EXACT SAME SONG that will enlighten your mood.

Now give me some Clayton noise :)

p.s.
You (and everybody else) MUST listen to the Ani song I linked to above. I have been a fan since the early 90's and she is one bad woman.
