Back in the 70s and 80s, Shantz was considered to be a common. When I started to collect the set in late 1999, I found out this card had gained some stature in terms of price.

What do you do when you wake up in the middle of the night? Post a 1953 Bowman Carl Erskine on this thread, of course.

Oisk

In the comedian's story, Carl Erskine has been having a difficult time throwing strikes. Someone scratches a single. Two men walk. Now with nobody out and bases loaded, that paradigm of constancy, the archetypal Dodger fan rises in Ebbets field. "Come on, Oiskine," he bellows. "These guys stink."

A curve breaks low.

"Don't worry," the fan shouts. "I'm witcha."

A curve is wide.

"Hang in there," calls the fan. "You can do it, Oisk."

A fast ball sails high. Ball three.

"Go get 'em," the fan shouts. "We love ya, Oisk, baby."

A final fast ball is inside. The batter walks, forcing in a run. "Hey, Dressen," screams the constant fan, "take that bum out."

The Boys of Summer by Roger Kahn.

The bio says he was signed by Branch Rickey. Chuck Conners the basketball and baseball player turned actor once said of Mr. Rickey...." Mr. Rickey had ballplayers and he had money and felt the two should not be comingled"

Just got back from the theater. My family and I were stuck in an elevator for around 30 minutes; it took the fire department to force the door open for us to get out. Then, the arms of both exits of the parking structure wouldn't open keeping us trapped for another 20 minutes. Oh, by the way, here's #17 Jerry Staley.

Phil, I hope the show was good enough to make all the other problems worth going to it.

Phil- had that happen once, it made a bang, dropped what felt like 10 feet, then we were stuck for 90 minutes. Never get in an elevator needing to go to the bathroom.

My Gerry Staley

It was "The Book of Mormon," my daughter got the tickets because she likes musicals and doing something as a family. I guess it was okay, the sound was loud and muddied and I discerned only about 60% of the dialogue. This was performed at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood which has a solid reputation, so it was a disappointing surprise. My preference is a serious drama or dark, biting satire. On the drive home, my wife and daughters expressed dislike for the show and the only appeal it had for me was the movements of the cast members while on stage.

I am a sixth-grade teacher soon to retire at the end of this school year. As we were walking down the street, my family heard someone call out my name. I turned to look and it was one of my current students who saw me passing by as she was looking out of a store window. Neither of us was anywhere close to the school where we battle, so it was both a pleasant surprise as well as a reminder that work can follow me anywhere.

Happy collecting to all and keep those 53 Bowman Color cards coming!

That's funny. Where I work I can walk up and back down one flight of stairs before our elevator makes one trip. Last night's adventure was more interesting than the show we attended.

Happy collecting!

Nellie Fox: Under the new grading standards this would probably be VG-EX. I would even consider it the same. Magnification certainly reveals dark, hidden realities. ;-)

Phil, I think I got this card from you a few years back. By the way, sorry to hear about your elevator story, I am glad it didn't keep you from posting your daily card.

Phil- Sorry about the show, I had seen it on Broadway a few years ago and really enjoyed it, but my wife hadn't seen it and I almost grabbed tickets for the Pantages this weekend. I'll give it a pass now.

Please don't pass because of my review. My sense of humor finds "Dr. Strangelove," "Blazing Saddles," "Duck Soup," and "Network" as artifacts of high culture. There's a film by Paul Cox called "Man of Flowers" which I thoroughly enjoy as well. "The Book of Mormon" wasn't my form of satire. My main complaint, however, was the muddled sound at the volume it projected. The audience certainly laughed quite a bit so I'm assuming they appreciated the humor more than I did. Check out some other local reviews before giving up on it.
