Lou Gehrig Card Help

1 Attachment(s)
I was wondering if anyone could identify this for me. It's made out of a thick cardboard type material. It's obviously old.. not in the best shape. Any info. would be helpful.

I did find a 1928 Lou Gehrig Exhibit Card that may be the card...

Thanks

It looks to be a 1928 Exhibit.

Semitar6 10-12-2021 09:34 PM

Yes, I just found a example of that...likely...thank you.

1928 Exhibits should have a blue hue

1928 Exhibits should have a blue hue.

Your item shows no blue hue.

I think you have an artificially aged fake. Look at the print quality and the stock seems wrong too where the tears show it.

If its a fake its very old. I found this in a barn, in a steamer trunk that was buried under 50 years of dirt...

I don't think it's an aged fake. I believe it's the real thing: 1928 Exhibits. It's just in very, very poor condition. Not sure if soaking it may help it look better by getting rid of the dirt or damage the card further. If you want to get it slabbed, Beckett or SGC may do it for you with Beckett being the better bet. Here's a heavily damaged W590 Ruth that was moldy that I still managed to get holdered by SGC years ago.

Even raw, you can probably get $200+ on that card these days given the skyrocketing values.

Semitar6 10-13-2021 10:10 PM

What's the going rate on getting a card slabbed nowadays?

vthobby 10-13-2021 10:37 PM

$150.....

With SGC due to it being larger than a standard card it will be $100 for 45-50 day service.

About $50 for getting it there and back. So..... about $150. No guarantee it will be slabbed but you will be out $150 either way. This would never grade higher than A or Authentic and like I said, you are paying for their opinion so you might be out $150 and get your card back unslabbed. Things you should know FYI.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's real. Here's mine for a comparison ...

Because of the provenance I am going 60/40 that it's real.

I believe it's real, could be mistaken.

I think soaking that card would result in it being in even worse shape. I think old Exhibit cards don't soak well at all. If you're hellbent on soaking it, try soaking some distressed common Exhibit first. I think you'll find that the thin surface layer with the photo image will separate from the cardboard.

Exhibitman 03-26-2022 11:51 AM

Definitely would not soak it, as Frank says. It would delaminate. Plus, the card stock is so compromised that it would probably fall apart. A conservator might be able to do something with it but would cost so much that you could just buy a decent card instead.

And here is Lou's postcardy back. Amazingly enough it still looks like Lou from the backside to me.

Exhibit Card

Now that I've gotten some more info. I believe it is real. If you look at the card closely, on the right corner, you can see the blue hue under the dirt. I'll probably just frame it on the wall and call it a day :)

Interesting

I've actually had a few people reach out to me about buying this card. If anyone is interested, feel free to message me.
