Everyone should be home by that time and no one can complain that they didn't get a chance to hold out their bid until the last minute. <br /><br />I'm not sure what the programming requirements are, but why can't they set up the auctions so that if there is no activity for 15 on a lot, that closes. That would save a whole lot of hearache.<br /><br />Jay<br><br>I like to sit outside drink beer and yell at people. I had hoped from Robert's auction rules and follow-up postings the auction would end around 11:00 PM PST at the absolute latest (and I was hoping for closer to 10:00). If you factor in the original 1:00 PM PST closing time for initial bids, the REA auction has had a whopping 10 hours of extended time and still going. That's actually way more than a typical Mastro or Lelands auction and basically asking bidders to stay on guard for an entire day. Not to mention the fact that despite promoting the opposite, it looks like this auction has turned into another battle of attrition over who can stay up the latest. <br /><br />Between this and the basically nonfunctioning site (unbearably slow load times, and that's if you can even get the page to load, which I've been having trouble with since early this morning, which led me to give up on some lots), I think Rob needs to do some serious tinkering with his auction format and certainly his website needs a major overhaul. <br /><br />While I think the world of REA and Robert Lifson, and I'm sure he's done staggering business today (which would account for the website debacle), I think today's event was a poor experience for most collectors if their experience has been anything like mine. I can't imagine consignors are going to be too happy either, knowing bids may have been left on the table because of frustration with the site's failures.

Posted By: <b>Hal Lewis</b><p>This basically comes down to ONE thing:<br /><br />There are probably only TWO or THREE people bidding a combined $700,000 on TWO items: Fashion Course Ball and 1914 Ruth rookie card.<br /><br />If they "cut off" the bidding all of a sudden...<br /><br />then the "losers" of those items will not have time to go back and SPEND their $700,000 on other items...<br /><br />which will cost the auction house 16% of $700,000 = $100,000+<br /><br />Can't really blame Rob for not wanting that money to be lost.<br /><br /><br />----------------------------<br /><br />BUT....There has GOT to be someway to do something to avoid this problem where TWO people can force 5,000 to stay awake all night.<br /><br /><br />Can't Rob give those people "ALTERNATE" max bids that ONLY get activated at the very end of the auction if they are the loser of the BIG items they are going after??<br /><br />Can't there be some way to allow someone who obviously has the money and credit rating to spend $500,000 to say:<br /><br />"If my $500,000 bid does NOT win the Fashoin Course Ball at the very end, I want the computer to immediately enter simaltaneous "Max Bids" of $50,000 on the T206 Plank and $100,000 on the T210 Joe Jackson and $150,000 on the full sheet of silks, etc."<br /><br /><br />Maybe the auction houses can do this for the 5 biggest items in their auctions and let the rest of us go to sleep!!!!!!!! <br />

Posted By: <b>Aaron</b><p>This is why I actually favor Hunt's format. You reserve a phone line and wait for your calls. (I've bid on items with Hunt's at a wedding reception and a college basketball game via cell phone, so you don't have to be chained to the computer all day and/or night.) Everybody else interested in that particular lot is either in attendance or also on a phone line. Everybody bids against eachother and in a relatively brief amount of time, everyone has to lay out their "max" bid. And when the call is over you know you've either won or lost and item and how much it went for. <br /><br />The whole call back system and 15 minute rule only acts to unnecessarily prolong the above while bidders pussyfoot around with each other. <br /><br />Alternatively, as Jay suggest, a 15 minute rule on each individual item also makes a whole lotta sense. You only have to pay attention to, and concern yourself with, the items you are actually interested in.

We had intended to end a couple hours earlier but the system slowness we experienced cost bidders time, throwing the schedule off a couple of hours. We didn't want to close the auction when bids were flying in late, and the reason they were still flying in so late was due to the slowness of the system earlier. We made the best of the situation, making sure everyone that wanted to bid could get their bids in. This meant an extra couple of hours. Then at 2:50 am I received the Outbid notice. I didn't open and react to it within 3 minutes and the auction was shut down. What people don't realize sometimes is that there are losses as well as gains...so if I buy something for 3k and ask 5k-6k for it it's really just making up for other losses <img src="/images/happy.gif" height=14 width=14> It's a great card and you will be happy with it. I sold it to finance my Lone Jack Comisky, otherwise he would still be in my collection....take care

Posted By: <b>leon</b><p>It must have been 3-4 years ago, so whatever this finally sold for wouldn't be as hot as some caramels in relative price increases..if ya know what I mean...this might have gone up about 2x but other issues have even more staggering growth.....I didn't want to spend all of my money on the TT Johnson when I know if I wait there might be another of them, albeit maybe not Johnson. I have seen 3-4 Texas Tommy - Johnson Type II's sold in the last few years though....and you could say that about the Kalamazoo too but I thought this was a special card. I have personally barely ever seen a card with that kind of registration. I hope it looks as good in person....and that's not to be taken any other way than light hearted but the clarity is amazing (am I gushing <img src="/images/happy.gif" height=14 width=14> )....regards

That's why I am so happy that I ended up winning the Boston team card.
