Isn't this cheap for a Green Cobb

Since acquiring a nice green Cobby I have been watching their pricing. It seems it's all over the board. This one seemed unusually low. Thoughts?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/35358179705...p2047675.l2557

and here is mine I paid quite a bit more for...(and still very happy with it)

Nice card Leon ;)

In my opinion when it comes to Green Cobb's, condition is key as there isn't a shortage of them in the market. Crease free, centered examples are still bringing top dollar no matter the slab, no matter the grade (Psa & Sgc)

The example in your link is a creased rough copy thus the ending price. Eye appeal on Green Cobb's is king which trumps all when considering value.

At least it does for me :)

Thanks Tony and I agree on eye appeal. Mine came from someone who has a good eye for eye appeal.

i also re-added a green cobby to my PC...and I agree Leon...it seems prices are falling on lower grade examples.

MuncieNolePAZ 08-03-2021 10:30 AM

Prices are definitely down. Not a green, but there was a decent PSA 1 Bat on that sold last week for $1800

That whole auction had really low pricing. I picked up a couple that were 30-40% less than what I expected to pay. Pricing is down but not like that. I think it was because it ended during the National. There were other Cobbs that went low. I think a Bat on 3 went for $4200, it was on the low end of a 3 but still a 3.

stutor 08-03-2021 11:10 AM

I’m not certain if it is the reason for the low price, but if you look at the bottom left of the front (on the eBay card) there was some writing erased. That would turn me away.

Green Cobb

Hi Leon

There was a time (not too long ago) that....that price would have tempted me to sell my green Cobb from my all - PIEDMONT set.

Nowadays, it's anyone's guess what I would get for it ?

Great Cobb, Leon! The color & clarity is outstanding.

Leon,

Certainly seems a bit low in my eyes also. So many likely steered clear due to the Mc qualifier. Image and registration is outstanding.

I wasn't talking about mine, which I will always be happy with the price I paid, but the one in the link that was an SGC 2 which went for under 6k.

Cobb

I think the one on eBay slipped by. Yours is nicer.

Sean 08-03-2021 01:48 PM

That card on Ebay went cheap by recent standards. It's only one sale, so it's too early to call it a correction, but its possible some of the steam has gone out of the surge in Cobb prices. At least for the lower grade Cobbs.

3-2-count 08-03-2021 02:16 PM

A nice Psa 4.5 Red Cobb portrait ended last night on Ebay for just under $15K.

Sharp Cobb examples which have eye appeal have not lost any steam in my opinion.

My two cents!

notfast 08-03-2021 02:51 PM

Ending on Friday night during the National is brutal. I was interested in the green and the Red 2.5 and completely forgot. Both ended cheap IMO

RL 08-03-2021 03:36 PM

perhaps more people do not trust PWCC and did not bid.

Nothing to do with SGC. There is no pre war premium.
It’s a good price for sure. I’ve seen 2 of that quality go in that range. One got sold here on net 54 in about 2 seconds . Both were PSA

Same 2 cards PSA brings more. It is what it is ....

I think this is the case. It's hard to overlook the many prewar cards that PWCC auctions, "sells" and then immediately auctions again, over and over and over.

ullmandds 08-12-2021 10:42 AM

its graded A...its altered...but beautiful...and a BIN??

Touch'EmAll 08-12-2021 06:42 PM

Don't know how much credence you take in pop numbers, but looking at just the 2 grade PSA pop:

Green 186
Bat On 174
Bat Off 178

3 grade and up the Green Cobb has least pop. I would have guessed Green Cobb to be most scarce across the whole board.

It’s not uniquely rare compared to the other 3 Cobbs.

sreader3 08-12-2021 08:36 PM

I don’t think PWCC auctions command the premium that they used to.

(Excuse the sentence ending in a preposition—especially if Barry S. is still lurking).

Scarcity and demand are not correlated as closely as we might like. My personal theory is that the green Cobb is in higher demand than the red Cobb because the Young portrait is green too and they look great together.

I am not sure if that population breakdown is for all 2’s with all the various advertising backs.
The other thing is what is the breakdown of the various advertising backs for each of those. Which have more of the common backs vs more rare backs.

3-2-count 08-13-2021 10:50 AM

You see far less of the green portrait come up for sale in 4 grade or higher than you do on the other three poses. Seems every auction these days has a red background, bat on or bat off in a Psa 5 slab in its catalog.

When was the last time you saw a green Cobb pop up in Psa 5 condition, let alone in a Psa 4 slab. Don't get me wrong, there have been a few, but its slim pickens. I also think the green Cobb is much tougher to locate centered than the other 3 poses.

My two cents...

Since we are discussing Green Cobbs, this one is listed on an auction site I follow. Assure me this is a fake so I am not tempted to keep watching it.

3-2-count 08-13-2021 04:30 PM

There are a lot of things not to like about that card based on those pictures.

looks like a stack of "cobbs!"

Exhibitman 08-13-2021 08:54 PM

Lemme see, bad photos of a raw rare card. Hmm. Unless you are buying from a certified village idiot, it is as fake as a three dollar bill.

steve B 08-14-2021 09:32 PM

Unless I'm way off, the SGC 2 from Ebay that Leon originally posted was a generous grade. To me it looks like a big patch of paper loss. Right side back from the top of "cigarettes" down to almost the bottom of "years". The small section between there and the s of cigarettes may be a peel and glue back down repair, but I can't tell well enough from the scan.

I too paid well more for this (at the National) than the SGC2 from eBay that Leon started this thread with. But, I love it!
