It's being reported that the ring was a stolen ring.

Usually if that's the case, the story hits the media and that increases the chance of the ring being found and returned to the rightful owner.

I don't recall a 2004 ring being reported stolen, however, lots of these rings have sold at auction.

It would be interesting if it's discovered the ring was properly sold at auction, where the ring would wind up. In that case, the original owner was paid by someone, perhaps the auction house and has no right to the ring anymore.

Hopefully further details will be released. And if the ring was truly stolen, it's great that it will be returned to the rightful owner.

Off topic, and maybe it was already brought up, but who's ring was it that was found 5 yrs ago or so in the ocean. Some lady found it and returned it to the player. I think it was NFL and was a 70's ring. Crazy to find it that many yrs later.

I remember that Story - it belonged to Super Bowl starting center John Schmitt.

Here's a cool story about John and his ring(s). He was so proud of his Super Bowl ring and meant so much to him that he wore it every day. He lost it surfing in Hawaii and was devastated.

He had Balfour make a replacement and he wore that ring all the time for decades.

Now that his original ring was "discovered" he has two Super Bowl III Jets rings, and he has two sons. So now he gets to leave each son an Authentic Super Bowl ring and he cherished both of those rings!

I find the story amazing.

As someone who found their college ring in a lake several months after losing it, I find the 'finding' of the ring amazing, but even more amazing is that the lifeguard, Mr. Ernstberg, did not return it to the player when he found it. Fortunately, people who keep things like this, especially when the owner's name is inscribed on the item, are an extreme minority. Fortunately he passed along some recessive genes for honesty to his great-niece.
