Yankees Photo Pack - Mickey Mantle

1 Attachment(s)
Hi everyone,
I am working on trying to pinpoint this photo pack. I can't seem to locate one that includes Martin, Mantle, and Rizzuto.

Thanks
Moose

According to TCDB , the 1956 set contains all those players as well as 12 more, is it possible they were issued in 2 12 pack envelopes?

Ah good idea. I haven't thought of that.

I just see these names for the 1956 action photos.

Maybe I am looking in the wrong list?

NNO Hank Bauer New York Yankees
NNO Yogi Berra New York Yankees
NNO Andy Carey New York Yankees
NNO Joe Collins New York Yankees
NNO Whitey Ford New York Yankees
NNO Elston Howard New York Yankees
NNO Don Larsen New York Yankees
NNO Mickey Mantle New York Yankees
NNO Billy Martin New York Yankees
NNO Gil McDougald New York Yankees

The photo pack has to be either 1955 or 1956. Bob Turley was traded to the Yankees on Nov. 17, 1954 and Elston Howard's contract was bought by the Yankees on July 19, 1950, but he didn't play for them until the 1955 season. Phil Rizzuto was released by the Yankees on August 25, 1956.

I have a Action Photo set the I guess to be 1955. It has Rizzuto and Turley, but no Martin. It has Bob Grim instead of Martin. It also has "Ross Photo Services" at the bottom.

I have another Action Photo set that I guess to be from 1956. It has the same list of players you list above. It is the same list as your photo pack with one exception, it has Larson (who joined the club in the same trade that brought Turley to the Yanks) and no Rizzuto.

Maybe the one I have with Larson was produced after August 25, 1956 and yours was produced before August 25, 1956?

Does your mantle match this one?

No, not in my "1956" set. The one in my "1956" photo pack with Larsen is the first photo. The photo in my "1955" set (with the Ross notation) matches your photo. It is the second photo. I also have a set that I guess to be 1953. The Mantle in that set also matches your photo. It is the third photo.

Edited to add that my "1953" photo, while it is the same photo, is cropped slightly different.

That's a different photo pack set. They are approximately 6 inches by 8-3/4 inches. (The Action Photos discussed previously are 8-by-10 inches.) I have that set minus the Robinson photo. The first picture is the Mantle from that set.

There's also two Jay photo sets for 1956. One has 12 photos, the other is their World Series photo pack with the Dodgers, it has 50 photos (25 each team). The second photo is the Mantle from the 12 picture set and the third photo is the Mantle from the World Series set. The Mantles are pretty much identical.

Lastly, there's another set that I think is from 1956 but am not sure. It's called "Past and Present" and I think is from Jay's Publishing also. I've never seen a complete set to determine a complete list of photos which are included. I've picked up at least two partial sets, but the partial sets I've gotten have not included Mantle, Ford, or Carey. Otherwise, it's the identical Yankees list included with the World Series pack. And I'm not sure where the "Past" comes in besides the coaches. The fourth photo is the envelope for the set.

I forgot to include the envelope for the 6-by-8-3/4 inch photo pack set.

So what was your best guess for mine? 1956 Variant? Mantle throws me off.

I would probably put it as 1956, although it could just as easily be 1955. I'm thinking that yours was sold at least through August 1956 and possibly a little later depending upon left over stock. They would have put Larsen in after the 1956 World Series after his perfect game. Having said that, mine could be 1957 and not 1956. But Martin was traded in June of '57, so hopefully it wouldn't have been sold much after then and there would be another 1957 variant.

So much unknown about these photo sets.

I wonder if PSA would slab it.

They definitely would.

But, you might have an issue getting them to slab it as a 1955 or 1956. If you look at the top PSA Mantle Registry sets, you will see the image of your Mantle slabbed as from the 1957 Yankees Photo Pack. The image of him holding the bat with the black background is slabbed as a 1956 Yankees Photo Pack. Would they be willing to do yours with a 1955 or 1956 date? I doubt it without a whole lot of convincing.

I just sent it to PSA.
I will post pics upon return.

I have had the 1956 WS NYY/Dodgers double pack (glued together) for about 40 years. Anybody have a approx value on it? Haven't seen it offered

They did indeed deem it the 1957 Photo Pack Mantle.

Fresh back from PSA

I have seen this Mantle also available as 8X10 glossy premium of some sort. It is also without the Rose notation. Any idea what kind of premium that was, and how/when it may have been offered? The image matches Austin Mike's 1955 set image as well as the one from your 1957 set apparently.

What year do you think this is? What Type is it? Should I send it in to PSA to see if it will POP?

I didn't know too much about it when I bought it several years ago? Thought it might be 58-61? Thanks

If they can make money they will slab it! This isn't one of them but I have seen some crazy stuff slabbed.

Photo pack cards are a nice, generally speaking less costly alternative, to collecting mainstream sets.

The glossy photo might have been used as a premium. Or it might have been sent by the Yankees in answer to requests for Mantle photos by fans. Or it could have been sent to press sources. The Yankees would send photos to news agencies of the players. Sometime, maybe around 1956 or 1957, the back would be stamped with the player's name, position, and "New York Yankees."

I have a couple of photos that use the Wingfield image. This one show the entire light standard on the left side along with most of the batting cage. It is glossy and does not have Mick's name on the photo. I don't know the source.

Attachment 577767

This photo is also glossy and has Mick's facsimile auto on the hip. I'm guessing that this is a premium for something. But again, this is just a guess and I'm not sure what it would be a premium for.

Chuck, I think it is from 1958 or possibly 1959. It is very similar to the photos included in the 1958 Jay's WS packs.

The following is a compilation of the Mantles in Jay photo packs from 1957 to 1960. They are in order starting from the top left:

1957 Yankees photo pack - 25 photos
1958 Yankees photo pack - 12 photos
1958 Yankees World Series photo pack - 12 photos
1958 Yankees and Braves World Series photo pack - 24 photos
1958 All-Stars photo pack - 24 photos
1959 Yankees photo pack - 12 photos
(1959 All-Stars photo pack not shown because, if I'm remembering correctly, it is the same as the 1959 team photo set)
1960 Yankees photo pack - 12 photos
1960 All-Stars photo pack - 24 photos
Unknown year, similar to 1958 WS photos but very slightly different cropping

Attachment 577777

Your photo appears very similar to the 1958 World Series photos and the last one in the grouping, which I haven't been able to date. Yours also appears to have a slightly different cropping than either the 1958 WS photos or the unknown photo (the top of the cap appears to be closer to the edge of the photo).

It's some great work there. Some of the differences are obvious but some are more subtle and take someone with good attention to detail to pick them out!
