Yankees Photo Pack - Mickey Mantle
1 Attachment(s)
Hi everyone,
I am working on trying to pinpoint this photo pack. I can't seem to locate one that includes Martin, Mantle, and Rizzuto. Thanks Moose |
According to TCDB , the 1956 set contains all those players as well as 12 more, is it possible they were issued in 2 12 pack envelopes?

The photo pack has to be either 1955 or 1956. Bob Turley was traded to the Yankees on Nov. 17, 1954 and Elston Howard's contract was bought by the Yankees on July 19, 1950, but he didn't play for them until the 1955 season. Phil Rizzuto was released by the Yankees on August 25, 1956. I have a Action Photo set the I guess to be 1955. It has Rizzuto and Turley, but no Martin. It has Bob Grim instead of Martin. It also has "Ross Photo Services" at the bottom. I have another Action Photo set that I guess to be from 1956. It has the same list of players you list above. It is the same list as your photo pack with one exception, it has Larson (who joined the club in the same trade that brought Turley to the Yanks) and no Rizzuto. Maybe the one I have with Larson was produced after August 25, 1956 and yours was produced before August 25, 1956? |

Edited to add that my "1953" photo, while it is the same photo, is cropped slightly different. |

There's also two Jay photo sets for 1956. One has 12 photos, the other is their World Series photo pack with the Dodgers, it has 50 photos (25 each team). The second photo is the Mantle from the 12 picture set and the third photo is the Mantle from the World Series set. The Mantles are pretty much identical. Lastly, there's another set that I think is from 1956 but am not sure. It's called "Past and Present" and I think is from Jay's Publishing also. I've never seen a complete set to determine a complete list of photos which are included. I've picked up at least two partial sets, but the partial sets I've gotten have not included Mantle, Ford, or Carey. Otherwise, it's the identical Yankees list included with the World Series pack. And I'm not sure where the "Past" comes in besides the coaches. The fourth photo is the envelope for the set. |

But, you might have an issue getting them to slab it as a 1955 or 1956. If you look at the top PSA Mantle Registry sets, you will see the image of your Mantle slabbed as from the 1957 Yankees Photo Pack. The image of him holding the bat with the black background is slabbed as a 1956 Yankees Photo Pack. Would they be willing to do yours with a 1955 or 1956 date? I doubt it without a whole lot of convincing. |

I will post pics upon return. |
I have had the 1956 WS NYY/Dodgers double pack (glued together) for about 40 years. Anybody have a approx value on it? Haven't seen it offered

I wonder why it didn't get the "action" label.

What year do you think this is? What Type is it? Should I send it in to PSA to see if it will POP?
I didn't know too much about it when I bought it several years ago? Thought it might be 58-61? Thanks |

Photo pack cards are a nice, generally speaking less costly alternative, to collecting mainstream sets. . |

I have a couple of photos that use the Wingfield image. This one show the entire light standard on the left side along with most of the batting cage. It is glossy and does not have Mick's name on the photo. I don't know the source. Attachment 577767 This photo is also glossy and has Mick's facsimile auto on the hip. I'm guessing that this is a premium for something. But again, this is just a guess and I'm not sure what it would be a premium for. Attachment 577768 |

The following is a compilation of the Mantles in Jay photo packs from 1957 to 1960. They are in order starting from the top left: 1957 Yankees photo pack - 25 photos 1958 Yankees photo pack - 12 photos 1958 Yankees World Series photo pack - 12 photos 1958 Yankees and Braves World Series photo pack - 24 photos 1958 All-Stars photo pack - 24 photos 1959 Yankees photo pack - 12 photos (1959 All-Stars photo pack not shown because, if I'm remembering correctly, it is the same as the 1959 team photo set) 1960 Yankees photo pack - 12 photos 1960 All-Stars photo pack - 24 photos Unknown year, similar to 1958 WS photos but very slightly different cropping Attachment 577777 Your photo appears very similar to the 1958 World Series photos and the last one in the grouping, which I haven't been able to date. Yours also appears to have a slightly different cropping than either the 1958 WS photos or the unknown photo (the top of the cap appears to be closer to the edge of the photo). |
the Mick
Mike, those photos are awesome. You have cornered the market on these premiums! Love that early batting photo.
