Posted By: JimB
I have never had success in the holder, but I have had success cracking and re-submitting. I would be afraid to crack your card for fear of damaging it as much as anything. If it were me, I would wait to do it at a show where you can talk to them and they have to actually show you why it is not an 8 rather than just anonymously mail it back to you as "min. grade". If it is as nice in person as it looks in the scan, I don't know how they couldn't put it in an 8 holder on review.
JimB

Posted By: JimCrandell
My guess would be that they tell you its not an 8 because of the centering.

Posted By: Dave F
Just curious..any of you guys that have the T205's in 7 or above actually submit the cards yourself raw? or were all of them bought already slabbed?

To me, T205's are about the most difficult cards to buy raw in "near mint" condition...when I see one like that I automatically think it is either trimmed or re-colored.

Posted By: JimB
Dave,
Re-colored cards are easy to detect and I doubt they get past the graders. You are right that nm or better T205s are tough. That is why there are so few. If they were easily forged or altered into NM, there would be a lot more of them. That is the case with many high-grade vintage cards, but even more so with T205s.
JimB

Posted By: MVSNYC
here is an analysis of the rarity of high-grade T205 vs. T206...(from looking at the PSA pop reports).

Total T206's graded: around 80,000
Total T205's graded: around 17,000

For every (4) T206 there is LESS Than (1) T205. so they are at least 4 times as rare.

For high grade:

T206 cards rated 7 and above - 6739
T205 cards rated 7 and above - 1088

Which makes high grade T205 about 6 times as rare.

Go higher, and you get

T206 8 and above -2642
T205 8 and above - 193

Which makes 8's and above T205's about 14 times as rare.

high-grade T205's are really tuff.

Dave- to answer your question, i bought mine already slabbed. the one time i bought a high-grade T205 raw (it was such a blazer, i thought it was easily an "8"), PSA deemed it trimmed...

leasson learned, stay away from RAW high-grade T205's.

MS
Posted By: Marc S.
about 10-15 years ago when there were two T-205 cards that I believe CSA graded GEM MINT, that Mr. Mint touted in one of his auctions? Someone here has to remember that -- I remember it caused quite a debate in the collecting community back then....

Posted By: JimB
The relatively low numbers in high-grade holders seems to indicate that the grading companies are pretty affective at spotting altered cards at this level.
JimB
Edited to add: Barely over 1% of T205s graded (not to mention those rejected) made it into PSA 8 or higher slabs. When you consider that probably a higher percentage of the high-grade T205s have been submitted than low-grade (purely for economic reasons), it seems that probably far less than 1% of T205s survive in nm/mt or better. That seems about right. Again, if they were easy to doctor and get past PSA or SGC, the numbers in those slabs would be A LOT higher.

Posted By: Marc S.
Jim -- the harder it is to find those cards in ultra-high grade, the greater the incentive to try and make it happen. When you have a T205 PSA 8 population one common selling for $5k and up...the incentives are aligned for potential alterers to try really hard to get something past PSA/SGC/GAI...and the risk (e.g. the grading fee) is a pittance compared to the potential reward.

Posted By: JimB
Sure the incentive is great, but thus far it has not equated with (unethical) success. There are not enough PSA 8s and 9's to even make one complete T205 set. Obviously they are not getting many of them into holders.
JimB

Posted By: Misunderestimated (Brian H.)
Actually the risk is greater than the filing fee unless the card is completely worthless before it is "doctored." If the doctoring is unsucessful -- a doctored card has very little value. And, logically the cards that have the best chance of being improperly "improved" and getting the coveted high grade are those that already grade high. So you might have to sacrifice a PSA 6 or 7 to even try to get an 8. And the doctoring is would likely be irreversible and permantly damage the card. Additionally, I believe that only a few people with PSA/SGC etc. actually grade T205s so it is unlikely that resubmission will help as much as it might with a more recent issue.
