1948 Leaf Printing Inconsistencies?

I know this technically isn't prewar, but this question is so esoteric I figured I'd have better luck here. Hope that's okay...

Everyone knows there are all sorts of printing inconsistencies with the '48 Leaf set, but I haven't found much concrete information on the subject. From my experience there are two main printing types. The first appears to be more common, and contains reds, blacks, dark blues, etc. The second is much more vibrant, with red ink replaced with magenta, bright blue colors, etc. Here are three Dimaggios that illustrate the point:

First one (normal, with red name, muted green background and black hat)

Second one (red name, vibrant green background, bright blue hat)

Third one (magenta name, vibrant green background, bright blue hat)

Anyway, I've been disappointed by the lack of information on the subject. Does anyone have any information regarding the possible types, relative rarity, etc.? I personally find the vibrant ones (magentas, bright blues) to be really attractive looking and quite unusual...

Thanks! I'll put in an order; I'm glad someone took the time to research it. Care to give me a quick rundown on the subject in the meantime?

1949 LEAF BB cards

Hi Brendan

1st, I have to tell you the Grading Company's have mis-labelled these LEAF BB cards.....the year is incorrect. These LEAF cards were never issued in 1948. The 1st series
of 49 cards were issued in the early Spring of 1949. The 2nd (SCARCE) series of 49 cards were issued in the Summer of 1949. I explain this in more detail in my article.

As you probably know, a complete set consists of 98 cards; and, 3 variations. There are numerous color variations which were the result of inconsistent printing of these
cards. I will focus on the printing anomalies in the next post.

The key card in the 1st series is Babe Ruth.

The key card in the 2nd series is Leroy "Satchel" Paige. This card is his first (or rookie card) in a Major League uniform. It is very scarce.

.................The light Blue Musial is a color error............this dark Blue is normal

......Mizell Platt missing the Blue background

A normally Green Billy Johnson and one that missed the Blue ink pass

The Cincinnati Reds were printed with red caps (except Peterson) in the early press runs of the 1st series. Subsequent press runs, LEAF changed his cap to red.

Ted's article was by far the best information I"ve ever found on this set.

Here's a few that I used to own.

So cool, thanks for all the great contributions! And Thanks Ted for all the info, this is exactly what I was looking for. Does anyone know the relative rarity of different printing anomalies (magenta vs. red, missing color, etc.)?

Griffins 04-12-2013 09:47 AM

the white backgrounds are near impossible, other than the one Ted posted the only other I've seen is Musial, which sold a few times in Mastro about '06 or so.
Anecdotally I"d figure magenta is tougher than red, but other than that it's just a matter of see what comes up in regards to yellow vs. gold, lt blue vs dark blue, etc.
Other than the white background Musial I haven't seen a premium placed on any color variation.

1949 LEAF printing anomalies

Occasionally, wrong backs will be found.....here is a Sid Gordon card with a Bob Feller back. I have only seen the scarce 2nd series cards with this type of printing error.

Has anyone seen such printing errors on 1st series cards ?
