Dad's and my T-card collection

1 Attachment(s)
Some of you know Dad and I have been collecting "The Monster," together since fall, 2003. He was not able to make the National this year, so we got together this week and I was giving him the cards I picked up at the show. We decided to put the collection together and compare checklists. We haven't counted officially yet, but I think we are around 420 T-206 cards. Thanks for looking and allowing me to share our set.

We should get together some time. I am on the east side of the county and have another close friend, a board member, who lives in the city. We should go get wings some night and talk cards?

Great photo of you and your Dad. That's what collecting is all about -- sharing it, somehow, with good friends or, even better, family. That's quite the collection!

BlueSky 08-07-2014 08:09 PM

That is really great that you can collect with your Dad. Thanks for sharing.

cincyredlegs 08-07-2014 08:11 PM

Very cool, feel free to share more details i.e. who's idea was to collect set, any differences on condition or graded, etc.

Patrick,
If you notice there are to two rows of graded cards in the middle of the table. The cards in front of Dad are his and the cards closest to the camera are mine. If you look I have a ton more graded cards. I like "quality" and Dad likes "quantity." It drives my mom nuts, she loves the look of graded cards. His are much more "a kid loved them, hard, 100 yrs. ago" condition. I send cards to SGC, while dad never would consider that. I enjoy the social aspect of the hobby, while dad just likes to buy and check off the list;). Dad also is into backs where I could care less, but I do seek out Polar Bears, due to the Southern Ohio connection.

We started at the Moeller High Show in Cincy, OH, Thanksgiving weekend, 2003. My first card was purchased from Mark Irodenko and was Ed Summers. Dad always took me to the local Howard Johnson show, as a kid, but never collected. He suddenly started with T's, and we have been slaying it together ever since.

My dad collects wine, not interested in baseball cards. We do drink wine and talk about my cards every once in a while, lol!

Steven, that is really funny, my Dad works in Dayton for Heidelberg Wine Distributing, and also enjoys his product:).

Awesome

Great story. Great to meet you and your son at the National. Truly awesome opportunity with your dad! This was the second year of three generations to the National for my family. Dad didn't buy anything last year and just took it all in. This year I think he may have started to get the fever. He bought a Nile Kinnick 55 Topps all-American football card and then bought 3 more cards from that set. Was so cool to see him excited. My kids like new and flashy football cards so we bought a lot of that for them and I like vintage football and pre-war baseball so between the 3 of us we had to hit almost every dealer booth but it was a time I will never forget. Love stories like these and can't wait to hear more updates about your T set.

geor952 08-08-2014 09:41 AM

Thanks for chiming in Iowadoc! The highlight of the show was watching our sons trade, bust wax, and bond over cards. Shiny stuff or not, that is what the hobby is all about! I knew your dad watch catch the bug! That is fantastic!

George...........While you're on the subject, several of other Net54'ers got together 2 years ago in Ann Arbor, with Andy Garden organizing the group. He's also a big t206 guy with only 4 needed for his set. If you're thinking about a get together, I think you might be able to get a group of guys to meet up. Just a thought as there's a number of guys in lower Michigan.

Matt

geor952 08-08-2014 06:28 PM

Thanks Matt, if you're in kzoo, Jackson would be a nice place. Maybe Gmrson, Mike, and I can get on that. Stay tuned!

Jantz 08-08-2014 08:41 PM

Hi George

Not sure if you remember me. We met at the food court and chatted for a few minutes. Can't remember if that was at the 2007 or 2009 National in Cleveland though.

Great looking T206 set so far!

Thanks for posting the photos. Nice pre-war collection you got there.

Awesome post.

I have a 9 years old son who loves baseball more than I do. Don't get me wrong, I love baseball like crazy too :)

In past two years, we have been working on 1993 Topps Finest Refractor Set. I know you guys might scream and say, get out of here- haha Its the first refractor set and they are very demand as only 241 cards made each card. There's 199 cards in set and we are at 109 now. I just showed this post to my son and he said, wow 420 T-206 cards! you have 68 T206 Taylor instead. He sure know what I got. I guess he listens really well. I told him that we will do a pre-war set after this. I think I might go for goudey or a set that carries plenty of HOF players.

It's nice to do this with family. I have 1955-1969 Topps Set from my dad's childhood days.

Even though my focus are Deaf Sports History but will always make room for something like this.

Best,
Danny

Hi George,

I remember meeting you and your Dad at the Cleveland National a few years back. In fact, we sat next to each other at the Net54 dinner and we attended an Indians game.

I am glad to see that you and your Dad are still collecting. Hope to catch up with you again one day.

brob28 08-09-2014 05:56 AM

Great story & collection George, sharing it with your Dad is priceless. BTW - I'm in SE Michigan and would definitely be interested in a get together.

geor952 08-09-2014 06:07 AM

Jantz,
I remember clearly talking with you and think of that every time I see your research based posts. Actually I looked through every Polar Bear I have last night looking for the printer line to add to your research, no luck here:).

Howard,
We had a ball at that show, thanks for the reminder. Hope your ebay sales are doing well!

Thanks for all the kind words!

Danny,
You and your son definitely need to meet up with myself and "Little George" along with IowaDoc and his sons at the Chicago national. We had a ball at night trading in the hotel conference room. Thanks for sharing your story!

Mountaineer 08-09-2014 06:29 AM

George, awesome story and collection! Keep up the good work on The Monster and I wish nothing but happy card collecting for you and your father.

varsitycollectibles 08-09-2014 11:46 AM

Thanks for sharing. I can only hope my son and I will do something like that one day (he's 3).

the 'stache 08-10-2014 06:47 AM

George, I have to say that this is one of the coolest things I've seen since I've been a member of this forum. There's nothing better than collecting with your dad. And I wish I could get my dad into collecting. When I get my cards in, I show them to him, and he will look at them. But he doesn't exhibit anywhere near the same enthusiasm your father obviously has for the hobby. And I'd give anything to be able to collect with my dad the way you do with yours. You are a lucky man. What an incredible thing to be able to share with him!

Here's hoping the two of you are able to finish off the set. But if you don't, no big deal. Sometimes, the journey is better than arriving at your destination. And in this instance, the journey you and your father have shared is better than completing the set could ever be. Now I have to try another angle. :)
