You're in a class not many others can hold a candle to. I am deeply grateful for your patriotism, sacrifice and contagious smile. As far as your MLB career., You're one of the very few icons of the game that I've chosen to collect. Sadly, I was unable to see you throw! But have heard and read about you're smokin' heaters. Luckily, I have your autograph put away for my grandkids and beyond, to marvel at one day. Being from North Carolina and not having a major league team in our area it was quite an experience. On the same trip to D.C. I also had personal audience with Vice-President Nixon. You were always very pleasant with the Tucson Fans as well as the show attendees seeking your autograph. One thing I will always remember was when someone asked about your career being interupted by WWII your comment was that you were glad to serve and had no regrets.

I had the pleasure of meeting you and getting an autograph at a card show in Liberty, Ohio in the early 80's. Thank you for being such a great ambassador for the sport.
