Help with assessing a Gretzky Rookie

Sending this to PSA soon. I need to place a value. What do you think this might grade? I need unbiased eyes. Thanks in advance for your time and consideration.

I love me some Gretzkys. That's a really sharp card. I didn't calculate the exact centering, but I'd guess it grades a 5 with the top-to-bottom being the main issue. Maybe they give it higher with an (oc) qualifier. A small chance of minimum size not met, have you measured it or compared to other cards? Top to bottom could be short.

The size is right. I agree with centering issue you pointed out. I tried to make the scan as large as possible in hopes of feedback like yours. Thanks I appreciate your thoughts.

I would think a 6oc or 7oc on the card. Really nice corners but off center hurts it.

Thanks!

I do not collect cards and could not even guess. I was wondering if the bottom edge would hurt this? It looks a big 'ragged'. Also, do those 4 or 5 printing flaws hurt grading? It is just for my own edification, not to demean your card.

Not demeaning at all. I appreciate any and all feedback and opinions. When the card is in hand the issue you point out is barely visible. I enlarged the pic to give as much detail as possible. The fisheyes dots may indeed hurt it.

I understand. When I scan photos or negatives in my collection I usually go to Adobe to clean them up. I enlarge the image so much that I see flaws you would not normally see. I then spend a ridiculous amount of time 'erasing' them.

With no yellow dot on his left shoulder, I assume this copy is a Topps one and not an OPC one?

That, in itself, will also be a factor in determining value, imo, as Topps copy's are usually worth less than OPC's.

Have you done your share of homework to determine if yours is real or not?
I am no expert by any stretch and I'm not suggesting yours isn't a legit copy, but it just might be worth it first to check it out before sending it in.
Here's just one of many vids and other info that is out there.

Thanks Irv it is indeed a Topps card. Due to the size and quality of the collection I am leaning toward it being legitimate. I pulled it from a full bindered set. Nonetheless I’ll check out the link you shared.

I'd like to see the back and also a picture next to another card in the set. I'm leaning towards real but would feel better with those two things to compare further.

DW03 02-12-2023 05:33 PM

Need back but 4 or 5 is my guess

Joey Bats, here is the back. I didn’t pull another Hockey Card from that set. The only other hockey card is this Mike Bossey rookie for size comparison. DW 4 or 5 because of the centering? I may send it to SGC to avoid the qualifier. I’ll post pics after it’s graded. Thanks everyone for the feed back.

DW03 02-12-2023 08:44 PM

Centering, bottom edge, and possibly surface, hard to judge

71buc 02-12-2023 09:41 PM

Fair enough. I appreciate your willingness to share your thoughts.

I sold my SGC4 for $800 just a couple months ago. I saw on Twitter tonight someone trying to sell their PSA5 for $1200. Yours is nicer than my 4, so I'm going to say a 5. There is a BVG 6 complete set on Ebay for about $1500https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...579e927f49.jpg

Results are in for those who might be interested. I went with SGC to avoid the “OC” PSA would have given it.

Arazi4442 04-13-2023 12:30 PM

Damn, that card looks tremendous in that slab. Congratulations.
