Hotel Recommendation for Laggards Going to National

I admit it. This year I snoozed, and so I lose...as in lose out on getting a hotel close to the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center for the National Sports Collectors Convention.

I'm not very familiar with Rosemont (and I'm not asking anyone to do my homework for me). However, if anyone knows the area and has attended the National in Chicago before but stayed 1 or 2 miles away from the Convention Center, and can offer a recommendation (off the top of their head) of a clean hotel, preferably one that runs a shuttle to the Convention Center and has a room safe, that would be much appreciated!

I'm not sure if it's sold out yet, but the Hilton Garden Inn isn't too bad. It's new and relatively close if you can't get one of the hotels across the street.

Just checked. Listed as a couple miles out but even this hotel is booked solid! Thanks for the lead though! Looked like a nice place.

I just booked at the Hyatt right beside the convention center two weeks ago. It was not cheap, but they still had rooms at that time.

I stayed about a mile away from the CC in 2019 (can't remember the hotel, though) and while they didn't have a shuttle, the uber rides weren't terribly expensive. Lots of airport hotels with availability in looking at hotels.com.

Good luck!!

Look in Schaumberg, Illinois.

Sure...it is no where near walking distance but about 20 miles away but it is a straight shot down interstate 90 and the cost is likely a whole lot cheaper than Rosemont. You can park in the garage across from the convention center for likely 15 bucks or so and take the shuttle over at no cost.

I live across the border in Wisconsin and if I didn't live so close I would likely look at Schaumberg or Arlington Heights (near 90) if I was looking for a hotel. Schaumberg has all of the same amenities that Rosemont does but it just isnt walking distance to the convention center.

Try this:

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Chicago Wood Dale - Elk Grove
1200 N. Mittel Blvd Wood Dale, Illinois 60191 USA

$140/night prepay. Just on the other side of the airport. It is twenty minutes to the convention center. Sign up for Hilton Honors, which is free, to get that rate.

It is just off of North Wood Dale Rd which runs right to E. Irving Park Rd (Rte 19). That road goes directly to North River Rd. just over a mile south of the convention center.

I would not park at the convention center or across the street. The Rosemont Subway station is about one-quarter of a mile up the road just past the Hyatt and Rte 190. I always park there and see a lot of other show attendees use it. Big difference in price and pretty hard to spend more than $7 parking.

Rosemont
5801 N. River Rd.
$7.00 for 0 to 14 hours
$9.00 for 14 to 18 hours
$13.00 for 18 to 24 hours
Each additional 24 hours (or fraction thereof) $13.00
Special multi-day discount rate available: $11/day for stays of 2 or more days, with an advance online reservation.

Here is where you can make parking reservations: https://www.transitchicago.com/parking/. This is for those who do not want to pay for long term parking at the airport and will leave their car there. It is not really for part of a day.

You

You

Completely agree on the parking. In 2021 at the peak of the hobby, the convention center parking lot was packed and a cluster, while being expensive. The subway station parking was cheap and efficient and plenty of spaces.

I recommend one of the hotels in Schiller Park, IL. They all have a shuttle that can take you to & from the convention center. Here's one that I and others attending the National have stayed at several times.

My thanks to all that have replied! Some brought up options I hadn't considered. Having a shuttle is definitely a plus because I'll likely want to return to the hotel during the day to drop off stuff, and my wife will have the car pursuing other adventures. Gonna pull the trigger and book one way or the other today!

On this subject - has anyone stayed in the Loop and "commuted" to the National each day?

BillyCoxDodgers3B 06-05-2023 10:26 AM

I second Alan's suggestion of Schiller Park. I stayed at the Four Points Sheraton in 2011 and was very content. I found it on Priceline. I used the "Name your price" tool and booked on June 30th of that year for $55/night. It will obviously be higher these days, but the hotel was fine.

Four Points By Sheraton O' Hare

10249 W Irving Park Rd
Schiller Park, IL 60176
847-671-6000

Keep in mind there were absolutely no dining options for a breakfast place anywhere remotely close to this hotel. I took quite the drive around the area, too. It was Snoresville from a business perspective. Mostly residential from my 12 year old recollection. I just remember driving around and thinking, "Where do these people eat?!".

Update: The NSCC conference housing office is pretty slammed but they do call back if you leave a message. I had success in getting a room at one of 2 available hotels (located 2.8-3 miles from the convention center) through them for the conference block rate of $169/night (the rooms still show up as "available" for those hotels on the conference website). There were a couple rooms left as of 2 PM eastern time, so those still looking might have some luck there, but I'd act fast. I believe these hotels 2.8-3 miles away are now the closest hotels to the convention center that still have rooms in an NSCC block at a reduced rate. Expect to pay over $300/night (not including parking) if you manage to find (any) rooms within about half a mile of the convention center.

I've done this several times in the past -- I used to enjoy it a lot as I went out to dinner in the city each night and got donuts in the morning before the show. It's also convenient for seeing the baseball games in the evening as well.

I used to take the train from the loop to the convention and more recently just opted to take Lyft each way.

npa589 06-05-2023 06:19 PM

Thanks brass_rat - that was my thought as well. I would probably opt for ride sharing as well at this point. I think it shaves off 40+ minutes roundtrip.

Motel 6 is right down the street, but you might need a bullet proof vest. They do have a Denny's next door, and the head cook does a great job. I prefer somewhere else, but it is convenient.

Considering it's at the end of a couple of runways at one of the world's busiest airports, the lack of soundproof walls might be more of a concern. I'd do the commute in from Loop before heading back to that place.

Who needs a hotel room?

We stayed out by the airport for the most part. Motel 6 had a rogue manager who tried to charge us twice. It was hard to get that issue squared away, but they lost our business permanently. And you are right, the noise is an issue.

Adam, is that George Santos in the picture?

Try looking into Des Plaines .It's right up River Rd.not far
from the Convention Center.
I used to live there years ago. It's a nice suburb. Also,I believe
there is a Casino,near there?
Like I said though, never had to look for a motel, there.
My father had a business at the junction of Rand Rd. and River Rd.,in DesPlaines,
years ago!

I usually stay at a Marriott brand hotel nearby...but two years ago had to stay in the loop....If I recall it was $5 roundtrip? and was about an hour each way...drop off is about a 10 minute wak away from the show...wasn't an issue at all and you aren't stuck at O'Hare if you want to go out and/or meet some friends. If I were to stay more than two days I would probably stay in the Loop.
