Opinions on 1906 Cubs team photo

9 Attachment(s)
I just purchased this incredible 1906 Cubs team photo and wanted to get opinions on it. I was instantly surprised to see a 06 Cubs photo I had never seen before. Doing my research I discovered this postcard:
https://www.vintageball.com/1906_Cubs_Nat_Champs_PC.jpg
However the postcard is shorter than this picture. I wonder if this is the master that they used for the postcard? Notice the text is exactly the same, the postcard just eliminated the players names.
Has anyone see this before?

Thanks

I don't have an opinion on its value, but I will opine that the photo probably dates from the month of May. Doc Gessler is in it, and he was obtained in a trade with Brooklyn on April 28th of that season. Orval Overall and Jack Taylor are not in it, and they were obtained in trades on June 2nd and July 1st, respectively (from the Reds and Cardinals). Tom Walsh is also in it, and he only appeared in two games with the Cubs, one in August and one in September, but he was probably with the team for much of the season as an emergency catcher. The Cubs had a long home stand between May 12th and 30th, so that is when I think they posed for this picture.

Excellent! I think you are correct. Thanks for the feedback:)

Looks like home uniforms and at The West Side Grounds in Chicago. That plus with the information RUKen provided I would guess it's possible it could be from their opening home game/stand of 1906 which looks like was against the Cardinals in April? I think it was a general practice of taking team photos on their first home game of the season...but could be wrong just a guess

It's a very nice looking early season photo for sure!

Thanks for the feedback!
With this info im wondering if this is a type 1 that later was stuck on the backing board?
Its interesting that the postcard in the link has the exact same line as is on the backing of my photo.

Take this to someone in person that knows photos, kinda hard to know without seeing this in person and touching the back and front - really nice!

Good luck!

The games with the Cardinals began on April 17th, before Gessler was with the team. The first home stand that included Gessler began on Saturday, May 12th, against Brooklyn. (Unless Sunday, May 6th, was really a home game against the Pirates in the middle of four other games played in Pittsburg. I suspect that the May 6th game was in Pittsburg and the Pirates chose to bat first, an option that was available at that time.)

I believe I have seen and example of this piece before. Don Steinbach had one or very similar. It was sold by Mastro back in about 1997 if you can dig out an old catalog when they sold a bunch of Don's personal collection. Try the November 1997 catalog or the March 1998. I dont have access to my old catalogs right now.

Very cool! I'll see if a board member has access to that. Thanks for the tip :)

The silvering in your photo looks legit. If you want to send it to me I would be happy to examine it and return it to you.

Thanks Rhys!
Are you going to be at the National this year? If so I could bring it there. Always enjoy visiting your table :)

prewarsports 05-21-2021 10:21 AM

Yes I have a table.

I am also going to be in Houston for the tri-star show in a few weeks.

The photo is original.

I imagine the image was used in formats, including postcards and this.
