I was a little surprised this Fleer sheet of Ted Williams did not garner any attention.....and I was happy to add it to my sheet collection.

...I'm starting to like this set a bit more but 1953 Bowman Color still makes my eyes smile.

..

MattyC 06-02-2015 01:20 PM

This was the Roberto RC for me. Wanted to spend as little as possible but also get centering and focus/registration. Often the face of the batting image is so blurry. Centering is not 50/50, but best I've seen since getting into the hunt for one.

Matty- those are hard to come by, sweet looking.

Those are some nice '55s. One of the better looking sets, IMHO.

Thanks to Bestdj777, I got my first Venezuelan Mantle.

Thanks again Chris!

Congrats on the Mantle! Not an easy one to land. +1 on those 55 HOF's. Those are very nice.

MattC, congrats on the Clemente rookie. I have looked for one on occasion and it is extremely difficult to find a nice looking lower grade. You definitely nailed it with that one.

MattyC 06-02-2015 06:54 PM

Thx. And here's the first no tilt bottom Ozzie I have personally come across!

Bob, that's a gorgeous Herb Score!

I am always a little sad when I look at his cards. I can't help but feel that a cruel twist of fate deprived baseball fans of one of the great pitching careers.

As his Baseball Reference page already notes, he would have had the lowest hits allowed per 9 innings pitched in history if he'd only thrown another 141 innings. Over 858 1/3 IP, he allowed only 6.4 hits per 9. And what's odd is that, even though he never regained his form after getting hit, he still didn't allow that many hits. In 1959, two years after being hit by the line drive, he led the league with 6.9 hits allowed per 9, and 8.2 Ks per 9. He just didn't have the command, which is understandable.

In his first two years, though, he allowed 6 hits per 9 inning pitched (6.04 to be exact). Compare that to Clayton Kershaw's last five seasons (not including 2015, which thus far isn't up to his normal standards). As great as he's pitched, he still allowed 6.6 hits per 9 IP. Score allowed 6.04!

Between 1956 and 1957, Score's 6.04 hits per 9 IP was by far the best in the Majors. There were 86 pitchers to throw over 200 innings combined across those two years. Sam Jones, at 6.90 hits per 9 IP, was next best, almost a full hit behind Score.

He had 36 wins, and 508 strikeouts before age 24. Who knows what he might have accomplished.

jb67 06-04-2015 11:04 AM

That is a very nice looking card! Just "pops" when you look at it. Bill thanks for
the history lesson on Herb.

Bob who is the cowboy below Herb Score?

ALR-bishop 06-04-2015 01:37 PM

Cowboy

Looks like a young Andy Devine, although I doubt any young folks here would know who that was :)

Outstanding looking Aaron rookie! I can't imagine any better looking PSA 3. Congrats!

begsu1013 06-04-2015 09:00 PM

bill,

spot on. really was a tragedy and worthy of much more recognition. much more! most just love him for his name, i love his entire story. i mean the guy got completely ran over by a truck at age 3 and just kept on going!! a truck, at 3! ...and 245 strikeouts in your rookie year? hot damn! well worth the time to read a lil on him.

as for the mcdougald line drive, such a class act that he didn't even finish running to first and ran straight to the mound instead. he was reportedly so overcome w/ guilt that he considering retiring if score woulda lost his eyesight. either just wouldn't happen in today's game.

jb,

as for the cowboy, ALR and Todd nailed it. it is indeed andy devine...good call!!! but i am young, sorta. and i know who he is! ; )

cb,

nice aaron rook. centering is great!

brian1961 06-05-2015 10:55 AM

I love Andy Devine's voice; what a hoot! Remembering him right now as the first mate on the H.M.S. Henrietta in the classic, "Around the World in 80 Days".:D ---Brian Powell

MattyC 06-05-2015 11:18 AM

I am all types of fired up over this little card right here. $110 on eBay. Rare centering, nice solid red area free of major PD, and most importantly for me: it doesn't have "caved in Mick face" on the batting Mick. Many 1960 Micks have a trick of inking that kind of makes the red cave in the side of his face.

This "3" is an upgrade of my "6," which will now be sold when I need to reach for the next big card. Nothing makes my day like upgrading to a cheaper card!

Nice cards, great start for June

Shaun, what a great Aaron RC! Congratulations

MattyC, beautiful Clemente RC and also real nice Mantle. Nice job!

begsu1013 06-05-2015 02:53 PM

brian or is it indy?,

his voice WAS "devine", most naturally have heard pencil thin mustache by jimmy buffett but there is also a frank zappa song accredited to him/his voice... i think the song is called ann d. devine....

JollyElm 06-05-2015 02:55 PM

Whenever I hear the name Andy Devine, I can't help but begin humming Jimmy Buffett's "Pencil Thin Mustache." That song was the first time I heard his name and the two are now intrinsically linked.

Had some pretty good luck in filling some holes in my Aaron set. I've been trying to get the Home Run Derby card for quite a while. The leader cards are Venezuelans.

Great cards! The Venezuelans are beautiful, and that Home Run Derby card is an incredibly tough one. I wish I had known you were looking for one as I broke up a near set earlier this year. Awesome cards and you must be incredibly happy to add them!

This is sure to elicit some mixed opinions, but I just picked up what I consider Topps' best card of the 1970s. It captures a HOFer in a classic pose in the absolute prime of his career. Great color too.

+1. I started collecting in 1974. Reggie and Aaron were, and still are, my favorites. Love or hate Reggie, you have to admit he brought excitement like few have before or since. I heard it said several years ago that Reggie's strikeouts were more exciting than most players' home runs. Awesome card.

Picking up on my 1978 Reggie Jackson comment (best Topps card of the decade), I wrote a mini-blog on my Top Ten Topps Cards of the 1970s. Enjoy!

MattyC 06-06-2015 12:12 AM

78 Reggie is one of my favorite baseball cards. I adore the 1980 Nolan Ryan for the same reason-- just a badass looking card of a major talent in his prime. When card design, color, photo, and subject all come together it's a wonderful thing!

Knowing that these are hard to find centered. And how most of the guys here, i envy for their NOLAN RYAN RC cards. Yes, that includes you Begsus and MattyC.
With some advice from MattyC, i finally decided to land mine. And hope it arrives safely.
I had a few messages with this seller and had a best offer which expired last week and found out today he lowered it within my price range. The National Treasure card is a bonus.
I had to look at Begsu's collection, and noticed the differences, need to see the backs bro.
Was trying to find the old thread on the backs/reverse, couldnt find it.
