That's a fun way to collect autographs/signatures. Also, contracts and other documents (things that appear official) are also a fun way to collect.

There's a lot of stuff out there. I can recall a time when Cobb checks were like $10 a piece (ok, that was a long time ago). They were given away with a donation (something like $5). The last cheap price I can remember for Cobb checks was like $35 a piece around 35 years ago.

Lots of Cobb checks out there. He's probably the easiest out of the (5) original HOFers. The toughest of course is Matty. Ruth is plentiful but the price has skyrocketed on his checks. Wags and Johnson used to be under a grand in the past decade (if you looked hard enough) but those are now starting to get a bit pricey.

The best thing to do is search fleabay and log the prices. After a while, you'll get a good idea of what checks seem to be plentiful.

Is it worth it to purchase an encapsulated check? If you plan to sell at some point, then that's a consideration, but after you start getting a feel for the checks, you'll probably figure out that the extra $$ for the plastic holder may not really be worth it.

The only one that I own...

Back in the days when I could afford it, I was really into celebrity checks. I have a couple of Ralph Kiner checks I think you'll get a kick out of seeing. In chronological order...

April 1, 1979: a check for $1,062.60, with the dollar amount written as "Ten Hundred" instead of "One Thousand."

November 23, 1983: a check made out to himself, signed four times: twice on the front, and twice on the back.

(At the time I originally posted these images to the photo sharing website Flickr, Mr. Kiner was still alive, so I digitally removed the routing numbers from the images for security purposes.)

HOF Negro League great Leon Day threw an Opening Day no-hitter on 5/5/46.
This is one of several no-hit pitcher signed personal checks that I recently added to my collection.

That’s a great Robinson check! But no chance I would frame the COA from his wife. You’re almost making the COA the center of attention and the check secondary at the bottom. Just my opinion. What the f do I know haha…

But a great check nonetheless!

Jim Palmer's ex wife was selling cancelled checks a few years back:

I agree. If you must include the COA, I'd suggest making a reduced-size photocopy and use that. If the check is the focal piece of the presentation, I'm not sure you even need the photo.

My only check - Cobb to his mother, Mrs. W. H. Cobb. 27 years after she shot Mr. W. H. Cobb.

I’d simply attach a laminated copy to the rear of the frame.

Wagner checks have really gone thru the roof, seemingly 3x from just a couple years ago...I don't know why.

Some of these old time checks are huge so I prefer slabbed.

I just ordered another 8x10 of Jackie in a Montreal Royals uniform to replace the COA, my thinking at the time was not the COA but to honor Rachel because I felt that she was an integral part of Jackie's journey, I will find another way to honor her

I think the LOA is pretty awesome. It's hard to tell Jackie's story without her. It's a cool piece to go with the check, whether it's displayed or not. Here's a couple Rachel items I have.

those are beautiful photo's, I looked for one and never found any

I prefer my tough checks to be encapsulated. Primarily for protection. Some of my checks are the only known example. Including Ichiro, jack Morris, Eddie Murray, sparky anderson, etc

kevtermeg 03-27-2023 09:29 PM

Still looking for a Wagner check. Prices on his and Walter Johnson are going up.

Kevin,

of the HOF checks that you have do have so far, which players were the hardest for you to find?

thanks
