T205 and T206 in Sweet Caporal cig packs?

2 Attachment(s)
I picked up this pack last week at the national and am thinking I might pick up a raw HOF card that I need to display with the pack (I think l recall seeing some display cards displayed somewhat coming out of the pack slider, which seems pretty cool to me)

Wondering if anyone can clarify whether both T206 and T205 cards both were originally in packs like this one that I picked up?

I would love to pick up a 205 Marquard to display with this pack, but would that be historically accurate?

Hope my question makes sense - thanks for any help!

Jeff

Is there a tax stamp on back of pack and if so is there a printed date on the tax stamp?

chriskim 08-04-2022 02:15 PM

You paid $125 for this box? That's a pretty good price.

chriskim 08-04-2022 02:16 PM

You will need a SC back with factory 42 Dist 4 NC, if u want to match the card with the pack.

I wish! (would rather not say... worried I may get mocked!)

Good lord! I guess I'd just settle on an SC backed HOF card.

A T205 with a red Sweet Caporal back will have Factory 42, 4th Dist. NC.
Marquard can be found with that back.

Please show pict of the tax stamp.

Dunno where anyone got Factory # etc. without seeing the info on the pack. Please show pictures of the Factory #, district and state along with a pict of the tax stamp.

It's in the first picture.

I'll repeat Rhett's request . . . show a picture of the back . . . studying the tax stamp (if present) will be very helpful.

Your pack could be 20th century (that front started in 1890) while Ted's is 19th century (more specifically pre-ATC merger, before 1890).

rdwyer 08-04-2022 04:54 PM

No tax stamp.

POSSIBILITIES:

T206
SWEET CAPORAL-350/460 SERIES

T205
Sweet Caporal

Oops, I missed that. A picture of the back can still help better date the pack. Sweet Caporal packs had several design changes on the back that can help narrow down the date although I've studied the 19th century packs far more than 20th century.

Series of 1909: Appeared on tax stamps in 1909 only.
Series of 1910: Appeared on tax stamps from 1910 through 1916.

Overprinting can definately date it. (1910, or 1911 on a 1910 tax stamp)

Ted, the pack you showed is very interesting.... I have never seen SC pack with small captions like your pack. "Series 568 C" and "No 22"

Thx for all of the help… here are more images of my new pack.

Could I have it displayed with either a 205 or 206 card with a SC back?

Jeff

Perhaps, you may be referring to these packs of mine (these are authentic T206 cards which I have inserted in these packs)......

Hey guys, does anyone here want to light-up a 111-year old American Beauty cigarette :)

Belfast1933: Congrats! You have a period pack!

Joe_G. 08-05-2022 05:52 PM

Excellent, always a bonus to have the tax stamp :)

That stamp is referred to as the "Series of 1910" and came about by the Act of August 5th, 1909 and became effective on July 1st, 1910. That stamp would remain in use until replaced on Oct 3rd, 1917 by a Series of 1917 stamp.

So your pack, by virtue of that tax stamp, dates to sometime between August 5th, 1909 and October 3rd, 1917.

Another important clue is that it references the American Tobacco Company which would be broken up in 1911 so it likely dates between July 10th, 1910 and late 1911 (concurrent with T205/T206 cards and other non-sport cards as well). I welcome someone else to weigh in that might be more familiar with the T206 era packs, I'm far better versed on the 19th century packs. Among other things, I'm not sure when "American Tobacco Company" was pulled from the packs.

Regarding Ted's pack, all Caporal, Caporal 1/2, and Sweet Caporal packs from mid-1870s (introduction) through ~1890 (ATC formation) contain the fine print on front stating "Series xyz" and "No. x" on front. I have several packs and have studied many others and have yet to find two packs with the same Series and No. All of these pre-ATC packs are factory 30. The signature on Ted's pack date it to no earlier than 1889, so I'd put it at 1889 - first couple months of 1890. Ted's pack would have contained an N card.

Hi all! Opening up this thread for review/comments on the below Sweet Caporal Fac 30 pack. From what I can tell, everything points to this being a solid T206 card holding candidate. Thoughts?

I would be curious to know.

With the multitudes of t205 and t206 in all these collections, you would reach the conclusion that there were multitudes of cigarettes and packs of tobacco sold. You would think there would be at least some extant unopened packs that never sold, would you not?

I believe I've seen an unopened pack on at least one occasion over the years but have never seen anyone's results from actually opening one. There could be a record of it on a video somewhere, but I haven't seen it.

It would be pretty cool to see one being opened and a T206 coming out of it.
