Block Bros. Rogers Hornsby RPPC

Is anyone familiar with this postcard? The stamp box seems to be period correct. I know what it says on it  but my few searches didn't turn up a lot. And it's a good question here :)..
I found it in a pile of stuff I have.

That is a cool RPPC! I feel like I have seen it somewhere before (maybe the same place you got it). Block Brothers made a common Cardinals team photo RPPC with the RPPC stamp box back (not mine). I think I have seen it dated as 1926 and 1928, not sure what is correct.

I need to go to jelly school (South Park reference)

Of all the Hornsbys in all the world, that's the one I'd want.

George,

Here's another Hornsby not for sale:

I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing. I still have several tubs of stuff I need to go through.

I was sort of hoping someone would have seen one of these or have another or something?
Where is Robert Silve.rman when he is needed?

Thanks Packs. Funny story. I lugged this postcard around for 5 yrs setting up at shows and no one ever made even an offer. I had it marked at 225. I haven't set up in about 3 yrs though.

I believe it's mentioned in this thread, posts 1390 and 1391: https://www.net54baseball.com/showth...161413&page=28

yep, I sold that one to you last year right at the start of COVID, if you can believe that. It feels like it was many, many years ago.

I have it listed as 1928 Block Brothers "The World's Greatest Hitter" Postcard but I had never seen another. It was in a lot of other period postcards I had purchased earlier in 2020. I believe I sold it on the Net54 BST with a whole bunch of other stuff.

Anyway, love that PC. I remember Prizner being pissed that he didn't get to me before you did...which means you probably underpaid :D

Hi Derek,
It is a neat postcard. I am wondering why you dated it to 1928--because of the team postcard? Seems an odd time to issue a tribute or contemporary postcard for Rajah, since he had been gone after 1926. Just curious.

Jobu 10-19-2021 05:07 PM

My impression is that the worlds greatest hitter is written on in the same ink used to color in the spots on the upper left of the front and isn't actually part of the card itself. Could be wrong though.

Hi all,

Leon: it's good to be remembered!

I remember that several years ago a large postcard collection emerged that sold in a big postcard auction. It had several St. Louis RPPCs from Block, including this one.

They made a couple of team cards with different captions (not the 2 we all are used to seeing) and a couple of single player cards that one never sees.

Pretty sure this card was in that auction!

In fact, I went in with 2 other collectors and bought several lots. We kept some and sold some. I actually kept one of the obscure St Louis team cards but wound up trading it together with others for an obscure Honus Wagner RPPC.

Had I seen this card on your table I would have purchased it...!

I thought it was longer ago. My bad on my memory LOL....
And Bryan, I thought the same thing and it very well could be handwritten on there. I put it under a loupe and they are not obvious pen marks. No indentions., Not sure...

Sounds about right. "Every time a friend succeeds, a little part of me dies."

No need to apologize, you were 100% correct!

Thanks so much for chiming in, Robert. Yes, you are remembered and always in a good light. :) Can't wait for the next National to see everyone again. Hoping to go to my least favorite venue again  ...and I know others love AC...but whatever

So the fact this was being auctioned with many other Block Bros. postcards means it is not handwritten letters on the postcard. They looked printed on to me but I was unsure. Very cool. I would love to see any other single player cards out there, if any members have one. Our community is fairly large...

So the question remains whether or not the autograph is legit? I have no clue but here is a 400dpi scan of it. It looks written over or something.....

SteveS 10-21-2021 10:26 AM

Maybe it was a proof of some kind. The parts that appear to be handwritten match pretty closely to the style of other Block Bros. postcards. Also note that there is no copyright symbol next to "Block Bros.," as there is in the team version and other examples of theirs that I've seen. So perhaps they contemplated releasing it, but never got around to it.

abothebear 10-21-2021 04:24 PM

The signature and "world's greatest" line have the same two-tone coloring, with the darker being a sort of accent. But the signature's dark parts look more like the scoring of a fine nib fountain pen, whereas the title dark portions look to be added deliberately as an accent. Perhaps there was a facsimile technique where you'd trace over the signature onto the proof to leave an etching, then go over the etched tracing with a pen. Perhaps the ink would pool in the score marks and fade or soak-in less than the rest of the ink.

Above the signature, there are some patterns that are unusual compared to the rest of the background. It looks almost as if they tried to do something there, it didn't work out, so they "erased" it.

Hey Leon,

Any update on this card?

Did you get it slabbed? I wonder if one of the grading companies has this issue in their database?

Did you learn anything else about it? I looked around and found nothing more other than what I mentioned previously

Robert

Hi Robert
Still have it raw just like seen. I don't think I would send it to SGC because of their history of mistakes with my cards. I might send it to PSA or CSG though....just not in a hurry. Hope all is well your way.
