Made a neat Babe Ruth "custom cut" out of the graph I asked about several weeks ago

I wanted to make something out of the Babe Ruth signed cut that I was asking about a few weeks ago on this board, so I ordered an early pose photo (modern print out photo, just early pose), and had the photo mat cut yesterday. Will be designing a back as well, and will turn it into a pretty neat "custom cut" 8 x 10 trading card. Doesn't scan real well, as the piece in person doesn't have the black shadowing that's on the scan at the bottom of the mat cut.

Just bought a Honus Wagner cut from Stinson as well, that I'll be making something similar with that one.

That's a great piece, Mike. That Wagner cut on Jim's e-mail list looked great too, you have excellent taste.

Thanks Jarrett, here's how the Wagner turned out.

Seriously thats what I mean by "floating" the signature , you can take a close cropped inexpensive signature and float it for display. They still look great and you save some money. Both the Ruth and Wagner displays look sensational !

That's an awesome display too, I may start trying that sort of thing. It's a lot cheaper than a signed 8x10 of a lot of these guys!

Mike,
Do you mount the picture to a mat and then have the opening cut?
For the back, will you print another picture and mount it to the back of the mat?

Best,
Mark

Yes, the photo is affixed to the mat with 3M spray adhesive, then the mat opening is cut through the photo so it gets the 45 degree angle like the mat cut so it looks right. I have the graphs inside of a cardsaver and have taped the cardsaver to the back side of the mat once I get it lined up right. Thus, no adhesive or anything is touching the graph except a standard cardsaver. That way in the future the whole thing can be easily undone with no damage to the graph.

I haven't made backs yet, but I'm planning a trading card style back with narrative and stats and will adhere the whole thing together once it's complete, making a 8 x 10 "custom cut" trading card

Good Idea? or Leave them alone

This thread has given me an idea for my old autograph book, previously posted in part on other threads. The autos were personally obtained by me after 1957 Phillies Spring training games, when I was 9. The most noteworthy (and valuble) are Campanella and Stengel. The Campanella auto cannot be separated from the Alston auto and the Stengel auto has some competition from below as well. There may be other autos on the back of the page as well. There are roughly 120 autos in the book.

The photo posted is a Los Angeles Times file photo I pulled off a Google image search.

Questions

1. Are file photos readily obtainable from newspapers?

2. If I can get a copy of the photo, should I consider a display as those in this thread?

3. Or should I leave the autograph book intact?

4. Either way I am not selling, but would the value of the autographs be
enhanced or diminished by doing this?

What would you do?

If you cannot get the photo from the newspaper try the HOF library.
