Perhaps because of the "off condition" I got this IMO for a good price. Scarce Unscored. 1939 RED SOX vs Yale program at Yale. w Ted Williams, batting 6th in RF. just three days before his ML debut vs Yankees. Foxx and Cronin and Doerr also played, and I found a detailed article on the game on the Yale website too.

IMO very cool Teddy B and Red Sox item.

I was able to land this wonderful 1935 Wheaties card as a companion piece (what else) for my 1928 TYPE I photo...

Sorry not pre-war, but a holy-grail item for me.

Arrived at work today and on the desk in my office was a package waiting for me. I have been waiting (impatiently) for about 15 years to add this Clemente item to my collection. I first saw one at the Ft. Washington show in about 1995 and passed on it at the time. I have regretted it ever since, have attempted to win some that have been on e-bay in the last year or so but came up short. This last time I saw one, I took the plunge. A couple of other HOF'ers came along for the ride....

that plaque is awesome. Those are really scarce. I have a friend who wrote a book on his Yaz collection, and has an amazing collection, and I believe that is one of the Yaz items he doesn't have.

I find myself migrating back to post-war after a long stretch of chasing pre-war.

I picked up the following 1961 Columbus Jets 8"x10" promotional photo for basically what the photo would cost off ebay, and was really happy about what was on back, the seller hardly even mentioned they were there. The Umbricht is actually about 2" long and is a bit light but who's complaining?

The frame is not vintage, but is made to look that way. I thought this style was a great match to the victorian look of the sign. Regarding the mat, there were just so many options, it was difficult to pick one. I went with the blue that best matched the inner core of the piece. But some others looked equally great or better. Some of the fabric mats looked amazing (but added even more expense) so I chose to draw the line with this version. Got the entire job done for around $150, which was better than my objective.

Great acquisition! What's the story as to why these are so rare? Were these Plaques briefly test-marketed by Topps in just one or two geographic markets, or were they simply never released to the general public? I remember this one from a previous catalogue auction (think it was REA, but may have been Mastro). Congrats again!

Thanks for the compliment. Great D&M Athletics piece also, I was going to inquire about the Giants piece, but by the time I got around to it, you had already sold or traded it.

As for the 1968 Topps Plaks, I believe they were distributed in very small quantities in NY (could be wrong though). They were a test issue and were extremely tough to come by. A small find was discovered I think in 2009 by Mile High in PA and some have since come to market. When they first started selling them off, I believe a full set went for over $60,000+. I think the prices have come down some but they still bring a lot of $$$ at auction.

If it weren't for that find, I doubt I would have one. As I mentioned earlier, 707 sportscards had one about fifteen years ago ($900 for a single Clemente), but I was in dental school at the time and couldn't justify it then (not that I can now either:D). But when the find happened, I figured it was now or never.

Hey Rhett...that's a fine Umbricht and definitely nothing to sneeze about. Also sounds like you got a good deal on it. That's only about the 5th or 6th Umbricht I've ever seen, including mine, but I must say he was very consistent in his signature.

That's a great story regarding the "now or never" of the Clemente Plaque. It's always best to strike when you can on these ultra-rare pieces. I've found there is usually much more remorse on the great/unique things you bypass than on the things you actually go after. And given the history of this Plaque Trio, I am positive that this one fits that category. Many congrats!

A nice way to start off June, a 1930's 125 J Joe Jackson bat. I haven't seen one of these in awhile.

You did incredibly well yourself, with the Movie Viewer. Those graphics on the Box are incredible with the iconic image of Cobb. What a great acquisition, in amazingly clean condition. Must be in "never played with" condition, and has to be one of the best to exist. Congrats!

Mike: Congrats on the 1968 Topps Plaks Clemente++ acquisition. After a ten year quest for this rarity, it was probably a good idea to pull the trigger regardless of cost. A Topps Plaks Kaline just sold at auction for around $800.These must be the missing piece in many advanced collections.


Mark: The D&M Athletics display looks great in that frame. The frame itself looks worth $150, great deal. I will post the Giants display as soon as it is completed and hope it turns out as nice as yours.

The Wright & Ditson book I won for $10. I've never been one to buy books or guides but I wasn't going to let this end without a bid. I'm guessing these are pretty rare because I'm having a real tough time finding another. Anyone have any info?

Brock: Wow, that Wright & Ditson book has to be one of the earliest instructional guides for baseball. Superb find and for $10 must been poorly listed or merely slipped through the cracks. Adam

Picked up an interesting photo of Dick Stuart from his monster 1956 season in Lincoln. Also picked up a photo of Nellie Fox's mom, dad and wife in the grand stands at Sherman Field in Lincoln from 1948.

Pirates and Yankees
 

Sent in my 1960 world series program and 1961 Yankee year book to the Pirates reunion show two weeks ago and just got them back. 16 out of a possible 19 sigs on the Pirates program (two have become ill and one doesn't do the shows for some reason), and added 4 more sigs to the 61 yankees book. Tracking down Al Downing and Moose Skowron right now. These will both be centerpieces to go along with signed cards and cuts for team projects I'm working on. I'm hoping to add some World Series tickets as well.

I'm thrilled to have just won this neat Jackie Robinson signed letter with terrific Topps Baseball Card content on a "Chock full O Nuts" letterhead.

I think it would be an ideal fit with my TYPE I photo of Jackie in his famous 1950 Bowman card pose. Now I just need to pick up the card. The madness just never ends!

Joseph Felix Casey, 1909-11 Detroit Tigers

As many of you know, collections sometimes get to that point where it's a reason to celebrate when the opportunity arises that allows you to cross off even one name on your super tough want list. Joe Casey, who died in 1966, and who was a former member of 1909-1911 Detroit Tigers teams, is on my want list. This signed Boston Fenway Park scorecard cut (c.1939 Old Timers gathering) is the first Joe Casey example I have ever viewed in 13+ years of collecting.

It is now in hand, and is mine. And the name Joe Casey has now been strickened from my want list. Parden me as I dance alittle jig, enjoy a fine whisky, and savor the moment. Cheers.

Jimmy, I know there must be some photos out there of Robinson in his capacity of working for Chock Full O' Nuts. Those might be great additions as well.
