T205 Gray gold boarder mystery

Noticed that my T205 Gray - no stats card has on the bottom boarder in the gold area, a 3 line and a flower kind of image on the right. The lines that doesn't show well as they are a diffrent hugh of gold. Also under photo image is also some small triangles and more patterns. It can be viewed best in full sun at a steep angle. I've shown this in a black and white photo that shows better.

More photos can be found in my Net54 photo album under t205 gray folder.

I researched the T card catalog of the ATC for all card series that has gold boarders including T42, T43, T80 and many more. With no exact match, the closes being the corner design of the T43 bird series #30 of the Vermillion Flycather witch has same or smiler flower design but not the 3 lines. I can find no card with a 3 line pattern on it.

Please check your T205 Gray card to see if you can see same markings and any ideas you have about possible overprinting.

My Gray has a big bottom border as well, but alas it is solid gold. The Gray is one of the handful of cards in the T205 set (Oldring and Thomas are a couple of other examples) that have the white nameplate on the bottom, which perhaps gives it more gold border for something to show up there.

You have an interesting card...may you find another to confirm a pattern.

Does not appear on my card I took it outside in the sunlight and looked close under magnification.

I checked my T205 Grays and I did not find that pattern on any of them, in sunlight or under a loupe.

It's curious that the lines going "up" the card from the flower don't seem to show up on the white nameplate. I'm not sure how that could happen if the lines are printed over or under that area. Definitely an interesting card.

The lines and flower image on your card look like the bottom of a Sweet Caporal T206 card to me.

There was probably a SC T206 card stored on top of your card for quite a while, and during that time the red ink on the back of the T206 affected the gold gilding on the T205.

My thoughts anyway. Cool card none the less!

That’s a good theory.

If so, then those shapes between Gray’s portrait and his name could be from a T206 Sweet Cap overprint graphic. From the photo, they look similar with the swirls and wedges in that pattern.

Great fit I think you nailed it.

Wow nice detective work, I didn't go there. Was hoping that it was some link to full 400 design mystery of the T205 set design.

Still interesting that the red ink would interact that way.

Good jobs.
