Posted By: Chris
Jason,
When did they actually deposit your check. Just because it has cleared your bank, they have no way of knowing that. A returned check for NSF or other reasons usually takes at least two weeks to be returned to the person who deposited it. I think if they wait 10-14 days after depositing the check, that would be reasonable on their end.

Posted By: Gilbert Porter
With the most recent update in banking laws last month (electronic clearance of checks - which is why most of you don't get cancelled checks back anymore), most banks will clear checks within 24-48 hours, even across major cities. Indeed, I have had checks clear in the SAME AFTERNOON that they were delivered. The bigger delays are not due to distance, but are due to whether or not your particular combination of banks have direct access to Fed wires and clearinghouses (i.e., major commercial banks will clear faster than remote savings and loans or credit unions, who rely on intermediary banks to handle their funds transfers). The ten-day rule ought be obsolete, but it will take some time before we all get used to the new quicker process.

Posted By: Chris
Checks clear faster but you still do not receive notice from the banks until a couple weeks later if a check you deposited bounced. If you deposit a check, the bank credits your account like the check is good. If it comes back NSF they debit that amount from your account as well as charge a fee to the depositor. All though checks can clear within a 48 hour period, the person who deposits the check still has no way of knowing it has cleared. Ideally it would be great if a bank would send these notices the day after, but they don't.

Posted By: Howie
All these big auction houses with their antiquated rules and policies. There's real opportunity for a business savvy collector to enter the auction business and show the dinosaurs how auctions should be run. Here's just a few things you can do to get them shaking in their boots.

1) No buyer's premium.
2) No seller's premium.
3) Free next day shipping and full insurance for all winning lots.
4) No need to wait for checks to clear because all winning lots are sent on approval.
5) Unlimited lifetime return privledge.
6) Toll-free numbers.
7) Free Fedex and pickup of lots to you prior to auction for inspection.
8) Guaranty you'll be able to resell all winnings immediately on Ebay for a large profit.
9) 10 cent bid increments.
10) Free high quality catalogs.
11) The ability to cancel your bids in case you change your mind.
12) The ability to extend payment for winnings indefinetly.
13) Cash advance of 100% of consignor's estimate of value on request.
14) Immediate wire transfer of balance payment to consignor at auction close.
15) No hassling of consignor to return overpayment of any cash advance.
16) Auctioneer to absorb state sales tax in case winner is in-state.
17) Auction ends when I am through bidding.
18) Credit card and Pay Pal payments accepted at no additional fee.
19) No registration requirement, no references needed.
20) Shill bidding allowed only on my consigned items, and not items I want to bid on.
21) The ability to cancel the bids of deep pocket collectors who won't appreciate the item like you would.
22) Replace caveat emptor in disclaimer to "The customer is always right."

That about does it I think. There's always room for improvement.

Posted By: Brian H (misunderestimated)

Actually to run a successful auction house I would recommend charging almost all of the fees to the buyers not the consignors -- so you can get better items and pick up market share.
The bidders (if they were good at multiplication and additon) would still pay the same amount but your auction house would just be the party collecting.
Also I would use Ebay's incremental bidding system rather than the "traditional 10%" that probably leaves money on the table. Also it's stupid that you can only leave a max at "every other" bidding slot. This may have made sense before computers (and good auction software) but it seems almost medieval right now.

....--->>>>
Oh and my cards from Mastro arrived last week (but I paid promptly and live in Chicago so the ground transport took about 1 day).

----- >>>>>>
And appluse and accolades to Lew Lipset who shipped out my winnings in his last auction most promptly. I appreciated it alot.

Posted By: Julie
Not only has my package arrived (UPS ground), but Ben has already received his package from ME--of course i sent it to him FedEx overnight. This all happened last WEEK!

Ben and I sent separate checks, both money orders, his air mail from Canada, mine Priority from California. They told me they mailed the stuff the end of the week before last, and I got it last Wednesday late, mailed Ben's half Thursday early, he got it Friday at 1 P.M. his time in Montreal.

GOOD SHOW! The Joseph Hall Saint Louis is VERY delicate, being mouse-eaten around some edges, esp. the upper left-hand corner; my SGC 60 Fan Craze Keeler is terrific, clean as a whistle, with just a tiny bit of chipping on two back corners...

Posted By: Jim Clarke JC
Check cleared the bank on Nov 1st. Package came in yesterday. Maybe new people running the auction, under the "Mastro" name. The packaging was the Best I have ever seen. Not much bubble wrap and "Popcorn" (yea) and thick cardboard sandwich with the gems in the middle. Plus, the packing slip was there showing the lots won without the prices. My wife had no clue when she snooped in the box when I was taking the kids to school.
