Some amazing cards posted so far. This is not one of them, but it does echo Leon's point that this is a good thread for type collectors.

Sounds good that the Jacksons are off the hook :D

Love the Orange Border Wagner

We will put that down as another Shameless (but Strategic Plug)

Kid Nichols portrait cabinet taken by Chickering ca. 1897. Anyone ever see another?

Found the image, NOT Nichols as my mind had mistakenly recalled, but Bobby Lowe the year 1897 is in the written inscription on the negative on the photo and the team B is placed different, so the Nichols might be a year earlier or later???

The Nichols I was thinking of turned out to be a Omaha's N173...

Ethan, please don't take this as a criticism of your post, but all or almost all of the individual cards in very many (if not most) of the pre-War sets have less than 25 examples known to exist. My pre-War favorites are the real-photo, black & white card sets from 1916, 1917 and 1920-22 with a plethora of advertising backs; there are less than 25 examples known of every card in most of these sets. IMHO, for a pre-War card to be considered truly rare there should be less than 5 examples known to exist.

Well said, Val. And great WaJo! Can we see the Weil Baking too? :)

Thanks, Chad for your kind words. Per your request, here's my 1916 Weil Baking. I'm still looking for a 1917 Weil Baking - can anyone help?

LincolnVT 10-08-2021 06:32 PM

Yeah, I totally agree. This was the case years back when I put together the E103 Williams Caramel set. I love seeing the 1/1 stuff the most, but in an effort to see more cards I decide to broaden the thread to include 1/1 -- 1/25...great looking stuff so far.

I like Val's idea of 5 or less known.... It would weed the posts down some.

Would've been interesting to see a 2nd one. Thanks a lot for checking Scott.

I do imagine duplicates existed at one time. Whether any others survived is the unknown. Both Chickering and Horner used the images they took to provide to teams and family members, as well as for use in publications. They also offered them in their studios for sale to the public. So.... the chances that multiples once existed are pretty good. I once thought that most Horner cabinets were one of one's, now I have seen dupes of many of the players, even the more pedestrian players.

These are both 1/1 unless there are other examples that I am unaware of which have turned up since I reported the existence of these to SCD back in the mid 90s.

Babe Ruth Pathe Freres. Only 15 have been graded between the two, not including my copy.

1909 Max Stein Ty Cobb. Only 6 graded between the two.

1910 PC796 Cobb/Wagner. Only 14 graded between the two.

Joe McGinnity’s 1911 Chicago Cubs Season Pass - the one and only. Going to be in REA’s fall catalog auction.

Nice items, and cool 1911 season pass...I especially like the "Captain Chance's Celebrated Chicago Champion Cubs" motto on it, and how the 'C' acts as a bracket for the alliteration.

Yes, it was a private sale. The person that I got it from I also got these from. They probably fit the thread. I was happy to get them back, albeit at 2x mark up....that's life. It wasn't like I was going to find them somewhere else.

+1. It seems like only yesterday when Leon sold this A.W.A. card: https://sports.ha.com/itm/baseball/1...ription-071515

Dan, I now have 9 of the 12 E222s, but I doubt I'll ever complete this set. Hope all is going well for you.

It's interesting how these E222s were issued in different colors and with different back designs:

Salt in the wound.

When you and Val are finished maybe there will be a find. 50/50 on if that will be before or after pigs fly.

Congrats to both you and Val on your acquisitions. I have been stuck at 6 E222s and 2 E221s for a while.

1908 Greenville Spinners

Here is a 1/1 I believe. A 1908 12 by 14 cabinet photo taken of the Greenville Spinners team the year that Joe Jackson went shoeless. Nice silvering in the right light.

h2oya311 10-12-2021 03:35 PM

very cool Ethan. Too bad he's wearing his shoes in that pic :D

I've got lots of postcards and cabinets that would fit this thread nicely. But "standard" sized cards is something different. Here's one pre-war where there are likely less than 10 known:

https://photos.imageevent.com/derekg...e/IMG_0007.jpg

and a pretty damn rare post-war card just to stir up some trouble:

https://photos.imageevent.com/derekg...20Gibson_1.jpg

And I saw someone else in this thread post a T5 of Joe McCarthy. Ironically, I have one as well...what are the chances?

https://photos.imageevent.com/derekg...arthy%20T5.jpg

Lastly, here's one that you don't see too often, if ever:
