Corrected Poll: 1938 Goudey "Head's Up" Series

Do you like these?

Jetsfan 05-11-2016 01:47 PM

Yes

Yes, especially the versions with the cartoons.

No, they're goofy and ugly.

If I want a goofy set, I'll collect Grignons. At least they're cute.

I think they're neat now that it's been 75+ years since they were issued and are a good example of period art, but if I had been a kid collecting back then, I would have been disappointed. Especially compared to the earlier Goudey issues and the Diamond Stars.

Stonepony 05-11-2016 02:23 PM

Nope, but I like Wacky Packages.

Love them. I just started collecting them in mid grade.

That's one of the main sets I'm collecting. We need a card in this thread

rats60 05-11-2016 03:06 PM

Yes

Great stuff. Personally I don't really care for them . . .but some of you guys may be bringing me around.

Fascinating what people are or are not attracted to. I love the 4 on 1 exhibit cards, black and white, and can't stand the Goudey color 4 on 1s. And I can't stand the red orange or other color exhibits. Has to be black and white. Love the leafs, love the CJs (who doesn't), and have zero interest in Mantles and tobacco cards. The fact that people are into so many things (pins? coins?) make it an unbelievably cool hobby.

i've always kinda liked them...especially with the cartoons as well. I may have owned 2 in my lifetime...neither with cartoon! I have the feller I bought maybe 25 years ago...its a beater but I like it!

My favorite set. Way tougher than people think, particularly in high grade. Plus, lots of questions about the hows and whys of this set that still need to be answered.

If this was supposed to be a poll I don't think it was set up properly. I would be curious to see how it would have turned out. I am not a fan of this set at all. I just don't like the look. I love the 33 and 34 Goudey. I know the Dimaggio is an iconic card, but I still can't bring myself to spend any money on it, much like the 63 Rose.

Snapolit1 05-11-2016 06:42 PM

I tried to set up a poll and screwed it up twice. Figured the board didn't need a third post from me.

Quirky cards, but I like them. My Bobby Doerr rookies:

I like seeing them among a spread of pre-war cards on a dealer's table. They add a nice aesthetic. But, I have never been compelled to own one.

Part of appreciating this set comes with the realization that they were intended for kids, not for middle aged adults collecting prewar. When I was a kid I thought these looked cool, and I still do. They look unique and quirky, plus they help fill a time period where not many sets existed, so it's nice to have a representation of the era.

So, yes, I like 'em!

They are neat with the writing around the player. Without the writing, not so neat.

Jobu 05-12-2016 08:49 AM

Count me among those that dig this set - I liked them as a kid and still do. Now, to get my first one ...

I like them even though there are no Pirates in the set. For some reason they are the cards I remember most when I was a kid going to shows and flipping through price guides. When I got back into collecting a few years ago and decided to go the Prewar route, these are two of the first cards I bought:
