1933 Ruth, Buyer Beware

https://www.ebay.com/itm/193775730859

The case has been tampered with, plus his other cards speak for itself. This card is going to sell for big money

You can tell, the case looks like it was cracked...

There are so many things wrong with that card and the slab.

There are so many things wrong that if you buy it you ALMOST deserve to get screwed.

Throttlesteer 12-02-2020 12:16 PM

I cant imagine the seller doesn't have a clue. Although, the feedback isn't as suspicious as the usual. Has anyone contacted them?

oldeboo 12-02-2020 12:30 PM

No bids on the '52T Mantle or Leaf Dimaggio yet :D

Their last four '52T Mantles sold, must be a big collector.

Has anyone told SGC? I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be amused by that shitty replica of their holder.

Kutcher55 12-02-2020 01:29 PM

It's unreal the garbage ebay allows on their website. This seller has been a seller for on ebay for 20 years and has only positive feedback. Ya right.

Their feedback ratings can be totally unreliable. Case in point - I recently sold a card to a buyer for best offer and saw that he had 100% feedback and 600 or so ratings, so I felt good about the sale. Then I looked at the detailed feedback and 80% of the comments said the buyer never paid and never responded to emails. My fault for not checking, but what's annoying is that all these people who trashed the buyer in their verbal review had him reviewed as "Positive Feedback." I'm pretty sure they hit negative feedback so how did it end up as positive feedback and why hasn't eBay banned this buyer since I'm sure dozens of people, including myself, complained on eBay?

Throttlesteer 12-02-2020 01:59 PM

It's even more frustrating when a buyer pulls a return scam and you have no way of leaving them feedback to warn the next person. As I've stated in other threads, I'm done selling on Ebay.

I wish there was another option alternative to Ebay besides the periodic AH auctions. Lots of barriers to entry, but it could be done.

Eggoman 12-02-2020 01:59 PM

One CANNOT hit the "NEGATIVE" button when leaving feedback for a Buyer, ONLY Positive.

If I blast the buyer in the text, I have to leave the feedback as POSITIVE and rely on other Buyers and Sellers to read my criticism!

It SUCKS that THAT is how it "works"

Kutcher55 12-02-2020 02:31 PM

Thanks, I did not know that.

Its also against Ebay rules for sellers to leave a false positive, leaving a negative comment in a positive feedback can get you banned.

How is it that I've seen Negative feedback for some sellers in the last 1, 6 or 12 months if buyers can't leave Negative feedback? I'm just asking because I've seen it.

What a surprise - the number on the flip isn't found in the SGC website lookup.

scooter729 12-02-2020 03:47 PM

Technically the flip reads "sgc.card.com" rather than the actual "sgccard.com". Maybe this scammer can say it is a different SGC since they're not referencing their actual website?

Or maybe the scammer is just a moron and couldn't type the SGC website correctly on their fake flip.

You read it wrong. Sellers cannot leave buyers negative feedback.

Buyers can leave any type of feedback.

You're right, I read it too quickly. Thanks for clarifying.

Looks like they are at least trying to avoid the trademark infringement on this "GC" slab. An eight year old must have thrown these together. Actually scratch that, that would be an insult to most eight year olds.

luciobar1980 12-02-2020 06:55 PM

EVen IF that was a legit card, it's fugly as heck. Seriously, if you bid on this card you deserve everything you get. You should do some modicum of research before dropping that kind of money, unless you have money to burn, in which case, so what?

I’ve been back in the hobby (albeit pretty intensely) for about a month now after a 27-year hiatus, and even I can tell that this is bullshit in 5 seconds. I’ve seen terrible fake PSA slabs as well.

I’m also an IP lawyer, and if the TPGs care at all about brand integrity, they should be sending cease and desist letters to these con artists. eBay will never take down a listing unless it misuses a federally registered trademark without altering the mark in any way, and even then it’s like pulling teeth. But the TPGs have protectable trade dress rights in the appearance of their slabs, which they should be asserting.

Totally OT- welcome back, after 27 years. Question, just out of curiosity, what brought you back into collecting?

Buythatcard 12-03-2020 06:07 AM

If you follow some of their feedback on where they made purchases, it leads to this Seller.

https://www.ebay.com/sch/jenlee1114/...1&_ipg=&_from=

They seem to sell fakes in BCG holders.

Thanks! I posted over in the "welcome back" thread you started.

ASF123 12-03-2020 03:24 PM

I just came across this ridiculousness on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1926-W512-6...0AAOSwN5BfHglv
But get this - the seller also has a PSA3 Goudey Ruth: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1933-Goudey...gAAOSwFXddg~Ym
What to make of that?

charlietheexterminator 12-03-2020 04:05 PM

The cards look totally authentic, just priced a bit high.

You mean you wouldn't pay 13 grand for a PSA Ruth from a guy who is also selling a raw "W512" that is in near mint with a corner lopped off??

cammb 12-03-2020 07:18 PM

Also since when does a 4 equal vg?

Stampsfan 12-04-2020 01:56 AM

Wow. I've never seen one seller with so many sold '52 Mantles and AF 15's.

yanksfan09 12-04-2020 06:30 AM

Fwiw, I reported those 2 horrible Ruth’s , maybe if enough on here do, eBay will be forced to take a look?

They're more likely to drain your PayPal account because the buyer claimed you looked at it and meant to purchase it.

yanksfan09 12-04-2020 09:26 AM

Yea 99 percent of the time if I report an eBay item nothing happens, but I’ve seen instances when an issue arises on the board here and enough report that they actually do something. Rare, but can happen occasionally.

What basis did you select for reporting? As far as I could tell there's no option for "the item description is fraudulent" other than if it doesn't appear to be something the seller actually owns.

Just spotted another example, although some sucker already paid $167.50 for it: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1933-Goudey...97.m4902.l9144

Copyright/and trademark,
then choose counterfeit or authenticity disclaimer
counterfeit, fake, replica items

then you can write a brief description of complaint

jb67 12-04-2020 03:41 PM

I reported it to eBay as well and also reached out to SGC to let them know. When I click on the original link it appears it has gone poof!!! Maybe we actually got this one removed before someone shelled out big money.

On to the next one...

Bobbycee 12-04-2020 04:07 PM

Just contacted this guy to tell him to take his fake cards elsewhere. Nice PSA label...

BabyRuth 12-05-2020 03:13 PM

But wait there's more:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Babe-Ruth-1...oAAOSwPMpfxlUu

and I love the feedback that he has received:
Card was 100% fake, seller immediately refunded money, no problems.

Throttlesteer 12-05-2020 09:48 PM

Those darned estate sales where ol' grandad was making fake holders on his attic.

ASF123 12-05-2020 09:50 PM

I posted another thread about this, but is a prewar card in a “BCG” (not BCCG) slab a major red flag as far as authenticity?

BCCG didn't grade fake cards, but as I recall, their grading starts out at something like a 5 for poor condition. BCCG was mostly for venues like Home Shopping Network etc....
