A variety of pickups from the Big Three - eBay, net54 B/S/T, local card show:

Dr. J in a cool action shot, dispatching Hall of Famers Artis Gilmore and Dan Issel, a sweet looking early Wayne Gretzky OPC card that is a mere half of a hair off-centered, Billy Williams looking especially sharp in black, and speaking of centering, all of us Mets fans are used to pulling our hair out in the quest to find a decently centered 1972 high number Kooz in action...

The '75 Erving All-Star card is one of my favorite basketball cards ever. Didn't realize that was Artis Gilmore on there trying to block his shot. I think the white guy that Dr. J is basically sitting on as he glides through the air is Dan Issel. I like your "dispatching" description. Nice Koosman too!

Isn’t Louie Dampier the guy on the right? It kind of looks like he is pantomiming a heart sign, like he is asking Dr. J to have a heart and stop savagely dunking on them.

Louie's number was 10, so the only person I believe it could be from the 1974 season/era (with a 4 on his jersey) is Jimmy O'Brien. Both players are white and shared a love of porn mustaches...:D

Ahhh, I guessed the wrong white guy. Team didn't have many of them.

Jolly...that 71 Williams is TIGHT...something about crisp 71's that really please the eye. Well done...

Big day for me for my 1953-55 Dormand collection...picked up 3...but it was 2 of the 3 that made it big. I got BOTH tough ones...Elston Howard and Bill Skowron. For those that know the nuances of the set, know how tough these cards are. They simply never show up anywhere for sale...rare for anything post-war. I'M STOKED. I am completing the set subbing them through SGC and and my set is 4 to 6.5's...so really trying to live in that area...both of these will be 1's, they were postmarked...and automatic 1. I'm OK with that...just happy to have them!!!

Can you send me a scan of the backs of the Howard and Skowron Dormands? I have never seen the Skowron one before.

Gems aren't too easy to come by from the 1977 OPC set. Most of the rare stash is tucked away in collections. Amazing card for a 70's vintage O-Pee-Chee.

Wow John...there must something wrong on the back of that 53 Jackie?? Tremendous 1.5!!!

Well, I am at the stage where I've built all my Topps sets...super satisfying yet unsatisfying. I tried to build second sets...I have a few done, a few half done...just wasn't the same. I thought of selling then building again, maybe pick up a big card or something fun...but naw, I love the work I've done and still enjoy looking through my sets (and the constant upgrading is fun). So I have delved into the world of slightly oddball...I say slightly as on this forum oddball is a whole other subject I can't comprehend...haha...Anyway...I have just started collecting the 1964 Topps Giants...SGC 7 and higher. I know the sets story, and yet they continually gain value even with the flood of high end cards. So late to the game, but having fun getting going. Picked up one of the key cards...Willie Mays SP...it's a beauty. Once completed, no idea what will be next but I will find something fun...it's all about the hunt. Time to thin the herd on my secondary sets and started sets as well. Anyhow...64 Giants, here I come!!!

Thanks. No, not really. Here is the back. There is some wax staining on the bottom right, but not sure that is responsible for the grade.

What's odd on this card, and not sure if you can see it on this scan or not - is that across the top border, on both the front and back - there is an indent / straight line - almost as if the blade that cut the card came down in the wrong place lightly, didn't cut it - and then came back up. OR it's like a pencil line drawn by a child using a straight ruler. But if a kid or someone else did that, they did it exactly the same on the front and back, which I think is unlikely. I honestly can't tell which it is.

I'm assuming this is what is responsible for the grade. I was grateful for the 1.5; figured there was a decent chance this would only get an Authentic. But yes, great looking card - presents a lot more like a 3+ than a 1.5. There is some light bending and wrinkles on the front which would have held it up anyway, but they are hard to see.

Harliduck 03-09-2023 02:40 PM

John...I hear you on getting a grade over Authentic...I've been subbing my 50's bigger cards here lately to SGC and have received a few A's, even on numbered PSA crossovers...but...wow, still not seeing 1.5 on that. Either way...just a fantastic card. I just subbed a 54, 55, and a 56 Jackie...hoping to get 1's, maybe a 2 on my 55 but doubt it. Your 53 blows them away...haha.

Picked up another 64 Giant...really loving these...

Thanks again. SGC owed me one, a few months back I sent a very nice but diamond cut '54 Jackie. They sent it back Authentic - evidence of trimming. I would acknowledge that the cut was weird, but the card was not trimmed. It measured out perfectly. That's disappointing to me; SGC should have known better but simply didn't take the time. Either way, I will agree they are tough. This '53 was a nice LCS pickup where I just walked in one day and it was new in the showcase. After quickly negotiating the price with them to my liking, I walked out with it.

Nice pickup. The '64 Giants are beautiful cards, but I have always had a hard time getting onboard with oddball sizes.

I know right? Technical grade doesn't always equal eye appeal. This card I think is a prime example of that. It's accurately graded, but the flaws are difficult to see.

Like some of the cards I've purchased, the scans don't always disclose the flaws.
During my early 52 collecting days, I purchased quite a few great looking cards, which I assumed were under graded but once in hand, and once turning/flipping/angling the cards in the light it was easy to see indents and the like.
Being somewhat disappointed thinking I was getting an under graded card, I quickly learned to trust the opinion of the seller I was getting the majority of my cards from.

Exactly. Cards that look EX in a scan can be P when you get them because of something that was not disclosed. This is one of the main reasons I usually buy graded on higher ticket items; it's frustrating that so few raw sellers (on eBay anyway...) even bother to list the condition of their card, describe it, or figure out grading for themselves. "Please see scan for condition." What? Well no, you can't do that. Technical grading / condition is more than just eye appeal. I have no problems with raw cards, but try to avoid sellers like that for reputable / trusted ones who can be bothered to put at least a one sentence description of their item in the listing that speaks to condition.

I love the ones that also state, "see comments for condition" but when you search their whole listing, read everything, there is zero language anywhere about condition.

Thank you! I hadn't noticed the stain on the rear border either. The bottom corners are definitely EX-Mint(ish), so the grade feels right. The color and registration stuck out to me. Many 1966 Topps have a significant tilt, so this one, while not dead-centered, shows really well since it doesn't have much of that tilt.

The 52 Topps set is a nice change from what I usually collect. For cards like T213 and n172, I'm waiting and waiting for a card to turn up in any condition, and then maybe losing the auction anyway.

Working on 52 Topps, all the cards are there right now. It's like shopping for suede loafers, I'm trying to buy the best pair at the lowest price. It's a relaxed hobby compared to prewar.

I'm closing in on 310 and working slowly on high numbers. The semi-high numbers are a little more difficult and pricier than I realized.

My March pickups of my first baseball hero Frank Howard, during my beginning addiction to baseball in 1969.
It's been fun picking up raw Frank cards without the graded premium. These cards seem like a real bargain after adding graded material to my Ted Williams and Koufax collections at a much higher cost.

Just got the results from my largest SGC sub to date...21 cards. Most are new Dormand cards for my set...and I also threw in a few 50's stars just for fun. I was pleasantly surprised with a couple 54 Ted Williams cards...card #1 has a few bends where I figured it was a 1...card #250 (which I bought a few years ago here on net54) I was hoping for a 2.5 or 3...got a 4?? Stoked on that one. No creases but soft corners and factory print marks. I'm still not a "graded" card guy collector, but I do love subbing to SGC...adds some fun...

Also got my first "Authentic" with the new label. Disappointed of course, but will admit I do like the fact they now say WHY. Before its just an A. Looks like someone may have taken a sharpie to old Casey here, or something like that. I had just picked this one up at the beginning of March...

In the mail this week are rookie cards of two members of the 500-HR club, as well as the last card of one of the most popular players in the hobby.

Continuing my quest for my Senators Team Sets. Picked up this little gem yesterday. 1962 Topps Rookie Parade #592 Dave Stenhouse. Yeah I know it is more popularly known as Jim Bouton's rookie card. But he ain't a Senator. So....it is Dave Stenhouse's rookie card from where I stand.

Now I am down to needing 63 Topps Carl Bouldin #496 1963 Rookie Stars card who is also the rookie card of Steve Dalkowski. Which makes this quest a bit more pricy.

Regardless, I am happy to add Mr. Stenhouse to the Senators team set and now setting my sights on the last one to complete the 52 - 71 Topps Team Set run.

Cheers.
