SGC Grading - Autos

I know I have been boring everyone here with my 1953-55 Dormand journey for a year or so now...but considering I read that we need more threads here...haha

On this journey, there have been some SUPER tough cards to locate, let alone buy. Been a super fun challenge, and really rewarding when you score. Unlike building Topps sets where pretty much everything is at least available...there has been one that has not showed up on ebay AT ALL. Bobby Shantz. One showed up last week...but it was autographed...like a lot of these (their original intent). At only 30 bucks I grabbed it and emailed Brent at SGC just to make sure they won't grade. I'm committed to an all SGC graded set as I LOVE the way these look in their slabs. He of course affirmed they just can't do it, which I completely understand. Can't put Authentic on it as that is misleading to the auto.

Here is my question...if another year goes by and still no Shantz...think they would grade it if I literally took a sharpie out and blocked out the auto?? HAHA. At that point it's just ink, right? I'm not grading these for investment, or because I am now a graded convert...I just again love the way they look. I've stayed crease free, and have some nice grades, but if the front looks good and clean, I don't care about the grade really. A blocked out signature would look terrible no doubt...but I could at least finish this! :)

I actually need 2 more...Shantz and Irv Noren. Mr. Noren has had a couple pop up but one was hammered, the other I got beat fair and square (STILL MAD ABOUT IT). So if anyone has one of these, I am a desperate buyer! You officially have me over a barrel...

I hope you're joking, but don't destroy the look of the card just to get it into an SGC holder.
At some point, they may bring back the auto authentication arm (or subcontract to JSA or something similar).

If damaging a card to erase an authentic autograph just to get into a slab isn’t a “grading convert”, I don’t know what is lol.

I suggest keeping it raw until you can buy another one for your graded set. The auto one is nice. You might start picking up other auto ones and build a second set.

yes...joking of course...It's absurd. I just find it humorous you can get a better result by damaging something more.

All kidding aside RCM, that's not a bad idea. I also have Charlie Silvera auto'd I bought on accident.
