Posted By: Scott Forrest
But I bid on several lots in that auction and remember seeing the Comiskey and thinking, "What the...?!?"

Personally, I didn't think it was worth a plug nickel as an N172, but if it displays nicely, who cares?

Posted By: barrysloate
I had this exact piece on consignment many years ago and it is basically nothing more than a skinned Old Judge that was slid into a fancy holder. Lokks nice, nothing more.

Posted By: hankron
In them thar old days (before N172s) they use to slip some small tintypes into little custom 'cards' just like like this. The tintype would be put into a slit and the hole in the middle allowed the image to be viewed. Often called tintype CDVs, as they resemble regular CDVs. Bright way for a collector to store a trimmed N172, but the two were not designed for each other.

Posted By: Bill Cornell
From item description: This rare card could have possibly been trimmed down to fit a period 19th century cabinet or CDV frame, HOWEVER, it could also very well be an Old Judge or Lone Jack Tobacco premium of some sort distributed at that time for salesmen or advertising purposes...

It could also, since he's smoking woo, be a bottle of snakeoil or the Mona Lisa or a jackalope:
