Help with T206 Cy Young

I recently purchased a vintage lot from one of wife’s colleagues who’s father had recently passed. It was a unique lot with most cards valued at 50-100 and this guy. I posted the lot on Blowout and sold it there. After selling the buyer reached out and said the cert wasn’t showing up on PSA’s site…not good. He reached out to PSA and they wanted him to send it in. He wasn’t comfortable with that (don’t blame him) so I sent him a refund and received the card back today.

A Blowout member mentioned there was about 200 consecutive cards right around this serial number that were removed which is odd.

Anyway, can the experts here help me out? Any chance this is authentic? I know very little about cards from this era. What little I do know about these I just learned from this site. It’s obviously trimmed but the card looks awful good for being over 100 years old…probably too good. A few things I read to look for seem to check out…brown font, pattern in face, etc.

Why would a fake be in a slab with a trimmed designation?

Any help or input would be greatly appreciated!

Cy Looks Grand to me...

The Fact that the Number comes back comes back
"Not Found in Data Base" is on PSA!

Maybe a Glitch in their Matrix ~

From the scans, the card looks real to me. Most certainly trimmed. Can’t hall re the PSA/certification question

Try calling PSA customer service early in the morning to get into their queue, they do have a phone number and are good to responding.

That card is certainly authentic.

It's an old flip. The new ones have a hologram on them. Could have just slipped through a database update.

I’ve never seen a flip with “evid trim” on the label, usually just authentic altered. Was this designation only on older flips?

Yeah it was an old practice. Here's a thread from all the way back in 2003 on the topic:

As stated by others it is an original t206. The same card was sold on ebay on April 2 2012.

Thanks for the info! Can you give me any details on the sale?

It was sold by prewarcards ln the same holder on April 2 2012 for $440.

From the picture, it looks good.

As it's labeled authentic/trimmed rather than a number grade, I don't know what the issue would be. As other said, it may be a technical glitch in the computer system.

Bullduram 01-24-2024 12:27 PM

I’d like to possibly move it at some point. Should I send it back to PSA and get it put in a new slab? Crack and send to SGC? Disclose cert isn’t in PSA’s database and sell as is?

I don't think most people would have an issue buying this card as is.

Bcwcardz 01-24-2024 07:23 PM

I’d crack and send in to get an authentic on it. PSA or SGC your choice. I wouldn’t monkey around selling like this. I’d take care of it yourself for a clean sale. Definitely crack out though.

I have an email in to PSA right now but who knows how long that will take. I think cracking it out out and sending it in might be the way to go. Is it ok to send in a card you know is trimmed? Do I just ask for an authentic designation?

My understanding is that the grading price is based on the valuation of the card. If you submit it then the price to grade it would probably be a bit more if you're looking for a numerical grade. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that a Cy Young that looked that nice wasn't trimmed, then it would be high grade and the grading cost would be a bit more than just disclosing it as trimmed. Anybody else want to weigh in?

For the people that know - what happens if you submit a card for grading thinking it's a high grade and pay the fee for grading a high grade card and then PSA says, no, it's trimmed. Will PSA reimburse the grading fee for the difference in submission cost between a high grade card and an AUTH card?

Edited to add - I don't mind a trimmed card like this if the price is right. How much are you looking to get for the card?

I don't like the way the top border looks on the card in question...But it's graded so ....

There’s no question the tob border is trimmed. I posted here to get help on the card itself being authentic. If the card is legit, I’d like to have it in an authentic altered slab where the cert # actually shows up.

Crack it, send to SGC instead, $15 for a standard sub on a card worth $1500 or less. If they high grade it and want more money, they will let you know. When you sell it, the price will be about equivalent anyway, but without involving yourself in the jackassery of PSA.

Bullduram 03-27-2024 12:49 PM

Update - I ended up sending the card back to PSA about a month ago. I just received an email it’s in the grading stage and the cert # now shows up in the database grade Authentic Altered. Might be available when it gets back. Card condition is super sharp, crazy someone decided to give it a brutal trim job!

A very odd trim. Looks like the top and bottom are angled equally, something trimmers usually miss or remove in favor of more even borders.

Bullduram 04-10-2024 08:26 PM

After a few months card is back in hand. Crazy somebody tried to trim such a beautiful card. Card is super clean otherwise. Thanks all for the input!

Trimming a card like that is like trimming the fat off a rib eye.

I just checked PSA with the old cert 19533279

https://www.net54baseball.com/attach...1&d=1712858607

You would think the old cert would return no results
but still shows

Bullduram 04-11-2024 12:07 PM

Once the card was in grading stage the old cert showed up on the site. That’s really all I wanted in the first place so I could comfortably move it. I guess they both show up now??
