Gauging interest in a piggyback sub!!! GRADES POSTED 1 YEAR LATER!!!

In light of the new PSA quarterly specials going on, I am testing the waters on a 1959 and older sub. I hate having this many orders out there at the same time there, but if it is going to the 6 months for them to grade cards, then I want to do SOMETHING. Is any of you interested?? The special is $7.50 per card plus the usual $1 for shipping to and from Cali. They MUST be standard size cards and 1959 or older.

nsaddict 05-01-2020 08:22 PM

Would you be opposed to a obscure free submission?

I like that. Main issues only and no variations. This way it pops before the next millennium.

I can always find something

kmac32 05-01-2020 09:57 PM

Have a few 20’s cards that could use a slab as SGC will not gradea few cards that I have and PSA has in the past.

bobbyw8469 05-02-2020 04:30 AM

Good deal...we are on, as I got 25 by myself....let's set a deadline, say, end of month???

nsaddict 05-02-2020 06:07 AM

Straggler free too? Plenty of advance notice. And I think they are done with paper submission forms?

Yes....no stragglers. People by now should know whether they want to sub or not. I know I have been steadily buying raw whenever a deal presented itself. I am sure others have as well. And yes, everything now is online, but I have been doing it online anyway.

tonyo 05-02-2020 07:15 AM

I probably could find a few....is the value limit $100?

Yes...the December one is still in RESEARCH AND ID!! It seems to have been there for quite a while. I apologize for that one playing 2nd fiddle to the October sub though....the October sub is like sooooooo close to the finish line though. These are definitely trying times. One must have the patience of Job, that's for sure.

toledo_mudhen 05-10-2020 06:09 AM

$1 per card on return shipping?

bobbyw8469 05-10-2020 07:32 AM

$1 charge covers shipping to and from Cali. You are responsible for actual shipping back to you.

BuzzD 05-10-2020 08:21 AM

PSA form

Do we need to print out and fill the PSA form along with the cards? Never did this before

NonSportDaniel 05-10-2020 09:02 AM

non-sports okay

Sports only or is non-sports okay?

bobbyw8469 05-10-2020 07:26 PM

Non sports is OK....as long as they arent too big...

NonSportDaniel 05-11-2020 02:22 PM

I’d Likely be in for thirty cards. Regular non-sports. R cards.

toledo_mudhen 05-12-2020 02:22 AM

I was wondering the same thing?

Pretty good timing, I was thinking renewing my lapsed subscription (thinking Silver just to get the Quarterly Specials and Bulk services)

tab 05-12-2020 07:49 PM

I have 27 cards ready to send to you as soon as I can get to the post office. It will be Saturday at the latest.

Farm_kid 05-13-2020 09:31 AM

I hope this first timer question isn't too annoying. And I bet Bobby is quite busy, so if anyone else wants to reply (or PM), feel free.

What are the steps if someone wants to get in on the piggyback? What paperwork do I need to include?

I've got 70 T206s, mostly PSA1s but probably some 2 and maybe a couple 3s. Most have some issues.

80% have creases
25% have paper loss
25% have marks
5% have paper add

In an effort to streamline, is this submission trying to avoid Marks, Miscut, etc, or does that even matter?

The only thing that matters is that is less than $100 in value and that you are willing to spend 8ish dollars to have it graded.

cubman1941 05-13-2020 01:04 PM

Also need to include piece of paper with your name - Net54 handle - info about the card and value of card with submission.

NonSportDaniel 05-13-2020 05:44 PM

So I'm at a bit of a disadvantage here. I don't know Bobby's address. How do I get the cards to you Bobby?

Farm_kid 05-14-2020 09:43 AM

Thanks for doing this, I have 11 T206 Polar Bears that I am sending your way. Probably all PSA 1s. That will get me 2.1% closer to completing my registry set!

NonSportDaniel 05-15-2020 01:50 PM

Bobby, sorry about not seeing your address in post 17. I'm not a sports card collector so I'm not on this board as much as most here. If you had posted on the non-sports side I wouldn't have missed it as I read everything posted there in detail. Regardless, I have thirty pre-1959 cards headed your direction tomorrow.

Thanks and stay well.

bobbyw8469 10-22-2020 11:02 AM

Still languishing in Research and ID.

Farm_kid 12-11-2020 08:25 AM

Hey Bobby, how are things? I saw were you said you have a handful of submissions out currently with PSA. Just wondering if there was any updates on this one?

I missed out getting in on your most recent grouping. I have some T206. So instead of grading what I had, I bought some more T206 (from some Net54 members also) for the next group submission. Thanks.

bobbyw8469 12-11-2020 08:41 AM

Research and ID.....4 months is nothing, as they are taking 2 months just to log stuff in......the last group sub took 9 months if that is any indicator, and they are even more backed up NOW than they are then.

Thanks again, Bobby

bobbyw8469 02-11-2021 06:47 PM

I have ZERO news to report....we are still in R&I. Just didn't want this to get buried TOO much!

Tyruscobb 02-15-2021 03:59 PM

I noticed the value limit was $100.00 for this particular submission special, when it was sent in, back in June 2020. I have recently participated in two submission groups (Bobby’s pre-war one, and the recent swinging 60s one).

Each special has its own value limit. When is the value calculated? Is it at the time the company accepts the money and order, or is it at the time the actual grading occurs?

If it’s when the grading actually occurs, then I imagine a lot of cards will exceed the limit, considering the long delays and the fact prices just keep going up. I hope the grading companies calculate the card’s value on the date the order and money is accepted.

$100 Willie Mays and Hank Aaron cards from May/June 2020 are now going for $300.00. I would not be happy if a card was under the threshold amount when I submitted it, and due to the long delays and crazy market prices, increases to over the value limit and the grading company, more than 9 months after sitting on it, refuses to grade the card because its value now exceeds the threshold.

Anyone know the answer or have any experience with this? Thanks.

swarmee 02-15-2021 04:17 PM

PSA will still grade the cards. The value once they're graded allows PSA to upcharge to the service level those cards now would require to cover return shipping insurance. So PSA reserves the right to upcharge, and because they track graded card sales on eBay with their Auction Prices Realized tool, they may contact the submitter and say that 16 cards now require upgrading to Regular service level, and they might charge Bobby $20-50/card now for those 16. It all depends on what they want to do.
Bobby would then reach out to the owner and let them know they'll need to add more money to their return shipping to cover the costs of the upgrade.

The special is a comprise between customers and grading companies. The customer receives discounted fees in exchange for a longer than usual waiting period. The grading company receives increased volume in exchange for lower fees. Both parties give up something to receive something. A trade off.

So, if a customer submitted 10 cards worth $75.00 each on June 1, 2020, and they are worth $150.00 each 10 months later, when the company gets around to grading them, the customer has not received the benefit of the bargain and has actually lost.

He does not receive the discounted fee, and has to pay the full boat rate, despite each card qualifying under the threshold value amount when he paid and dropped them into the mail. Moreover, because they were in a bulk submission, he had to wait even extra longer just to eventually pay the full boat rate. This is a nightmare scenario.

This scenario permits a grading company to actually benefit for running a slow operation. The company gets an interest free loan on you money for 10 months, and then gets to ask you for even more capital at the end - all while you had to wait longer than usual because you originally submitted them in a bulk rate submission. This is a dream scenario for the grading companies.

wondo 02-15-2021 05:32 PM

How does PSA get an interest free loan?

A company has your money for 10 months before performing the contracted for services. You don’t think having the money for 10 months before performing the services is not essentially equivalent to an interest free loan?

Incorrect. PSA doesn't charge you until the grading is over. Beckett charges when the submission gets there, no matter how long it takes them to complete.

I stand corrected if this is not the case. The company I have utilized in the past has made me pay upfront. I didn’t realize each company had different payment policies. I assumed (and that is where I made my mistake) that the industry norm was for payment upfront.

No problem. I was unaware this was varied within the industry. Would tick me off a little - salt in the wound. On the other hand, I would have forgotten about payment if I subbed. Silver lining!

On a different note, I have subbed through Bobby and I wound not go through the work and turmoil he does on a group sub. The man has the patience of Job. Always appreciate it, Bobby!

I didn't mind it...I actually think it is fun.....but waiting 9-10 months before cards come back is TOTALLY not fun. I have to file everything away and hope not to forget any little idiosyncrisies that happened.

FWIW - We are still waiting on bulk sub that logged in back around last part of May/beginning part of June

So "graded thru August 3" (if not an outright lie) doesn't necessarily mean shipped

I think this is the one you're talking about Lonnie.

I thought that we submitted under a quarterly special; those are currently processing orders logged by July 13th. That would make it at least another month away from grading, wouldn't it?
