I searched and couldn’t find a thread so let’s start one. Leon: if there is one already in the archives my apologies. I have been collecting gamers for 25 years or so with a concentration on the Tigers. Here is a Scott Lusader bat that I had signed today. Let’s see what everyone has!

Picked up a Rafael Ramirez gamer in Mears last night. I'll post more later this week. I have some earlier ones.

Astros fans will remember him as a pretty good shortstop in the late 80's, early nineties, the era of this bat...

PSA 9 GU 1960 Adirondack MICKEY MANTLE bat with vintage 1960 signature which puts it in Mickey’s hand. I like the cleat marks, bat rack (yankee stadium green) marks and light coat of pine but especially love the deep stitch marks which only the Mick could “seemingly” produce.

Beautiful Mantle Ben! I only have three game used bats. The first is José Pagan's 1971 World Series bat. He drove in Stargell with a double in game 7. That run proved to be the winning run. I have always wondered if this was that bat. I will never know and can't prove it anyway. Nonetheless, its fun to think about. The second is a Kirby Puckett gamer. I love the "34 Knock 34" inscription on the knob. I got this one signed in person with the help of Dave Henderson. The last is Reggie gamer. I got it signed at the National this year.

Congratulations! I also picked up a Zimmerman bat recently, but I'm not sure that it's a pro-model. It has an interesting knob, but who knows? If you can post a close up or 2 of your new acquisitions, I, at least, would be happy to see it. For some reason, I really enjoy looking at the details on these old bats.

Bpm0014 03-10-2020 09:41 AM

That's awesome! Spalding is really tough to tell I think. I'll post some detailed pics when I get home. We may have talked before, but I have a 1905-1910 Bill Abstein game used bat. I know you like old game used Pirate bats....

Lol I like how you think.
Here is a neat example of stamps on a bat. Actually the stamps have flaked away on this example but the idea of throwing stamps on a bat and it getting to its destination has always amazed me. I know this also happened with guns. Different times.

No. These bats are 1920s-30s and the factory also suffered a fire in 1931.

Virgil "Fire" Trucks circa 1952 era game used Adirondack bat

4 Attachment(s)
Hi Mike,
Great idea for a new thread!

I'm thrilled to have recently picked up this circa 1952 vintage game used Adirondack bat of Detroit Tigers fastball pitcher Virgil "Fire" Trucks.

In 1952 Virgil Trucks joined Johnny "Double No-Hit" Vander Meer (1938) and Allie Reynolds (1951) as the only 3 pitchers to accomplish the feat of hurling two no-hitters in a single season.
It's important to note that since 1952, only three pitchers have joined this list: Nolan Ryan (1973) and Roy Halladay (2010) and Max Scherzer (2015) making this one of the most exclusive clubs in ML history. Sadly, 4 of these 6 pitchers are now deceased.

Pitchers bats are rare. Finding a vintage, game used bat with tons of use, that was actually signed by Trucks made this an unbelievable pickup for my advanced no-hitter collection.

Ben, that is one gorgeous Mantle example. It has everything going for it...

Vintage Mick signature
Great usage, but not abused
Beautiful Adirondack stampings

Those late 50s/early 60s Adirondacks with the white stampings are the most aesthetically beautiful bats ever made, IMHO. And yours is a Holy Grail. :D

Scott, Max Scherzer of the Wash. Nationals became the 6th pitcher to accomplish this feat in 2015. He no-hit the Pirates on 6/20/15, just missing a perfect game by hitting a Pirates batter with 2 outs in the 9th. My wife and I were most fortunate to have attended this game. Scherzer also no-hit the Mets on 10/3/15.

Interesting photo.
I always assumed the tape was applied to fix a crack or some damage. Its exciting to see that it actually could have been placed there by him.

Ash. And it's called "Grain Checking". Happens with heavy, repeated use. The wood splits slightly at the major contact point(s). A killer Gamer.

Joecoco 03-16-2020 04:14 PM

Well said. It is an ash bat- 86-89 labeling. Well before maple came into popularity. It is a 9-grain bat. There is slight checking on back of barrel, which is what retired it, so great call!

Some grain separation, but no cracks at all. Thing is a brick.

Rickey Henderson circa 1986-1988 NY Yankees game used bat

5 Attachment(s)
Here is one modern game used bat that I own in my personal collection that I really like:
A circa 1986-1988 era game used Rickey Henderson (HOF) bat that shows outstanding use and was vintage signed by The Man of Steal during his tenure with the NYY.

The barrel exhibits extensive grain separation and some checking, but remains uncracked.
The signature is big & bold. The knob has Rickey's uni # 24 written on it with what appears to be the same gold Sharpie that Henderson used to sign the barrel.

I'm not sure what more you could ask for as a bat collector, but it certainly checks off all the boxes for me.:)
