Soto to the Padres

Padres are going for it. They get Josh Bell in the deal too.

ugh,

At least I finally got to see a Washington World Series Championship in my lifetime. Now it is fire sale time and back to mediocrity for the NATS/Sens.

Good while it lasted for sure.

If anything, I can now hope for the return of $3-$5 tickets on StubHub for Nats games to see the other team play.

ouch and good point too.

Looks like the Padres had a haul of promising young guys to get the deal done.

Wish the Yankees had gone a little bit harder after him, but they likely didn't have the talent the Nats were interested in.

Padres didn't even have to eat Patrick Corbin's contract to get it done.

rjackson44 08-02-2022 10:45 AM

horrible team seen this movie before ,,

packs 08-02-2022 11:29 AM

Yankees apparently made the only realistic offer for Ohtani, even though it wasn't done. Have to think they were offering both Volpe and Dominguez for him. Not sure Soto has the same price tag as Ohtani though.

BobbyStrawberry 08-02-2022 11:35 AM

Ohtani in the Bronx would have been fun!

Peter_Spaeth 08-02-2022 11:42 AM

Soto Machado and presumably at some point Tatis.

Astonishing decline for a team that won the 2019 Series.

mrreality68 08-02-2022 12:36 PM

I am not a Padres fan but it is a great move for them. IT makes there team younger and tough now for this years playoffs and a contender for the next several years.
Not happy my team has done nothing to bolster their roster

1952boyntoncollector 08-02-2022 12:41 PM

odds for w.s. of padres

Went up to like 10-1. I actually just placed a bet on them to win the world series a few weeks ago. Still a long road but i thought odds of 17-1 or so considering they were candidates to upgrade their team and have Darvish, Clev and also Tatis coming back made them a good bet or hedge later on..

for smaller market teams, really not astonishing... marlins etc......have to win the world series with the right mix of veterans and young hitters before they leave your team.... it not uncommon for a small market team to fall hard after winning or coming close to winning a championship

most fans would take their small market team winning 1 championship every 6 or so years im sure.. ask the twins or As etc...heck 10 years...

The padres shocked everyone when they paid for Hosmer...then really shocked with Machado...they changed the narrative

clydepepper 08-02-2022 01:03 PM

It will be interesting to see what Hosmer is able to pull out of this...since he had a no-trade clause.

Imagine having to leave San Diego for Washington....ouch!

I don't think that's true. The Padres have been trying to be a good team for a while. They just always sign / trade for the wrong players:

Josh Johnson
Will Myers
Eric Hosmer
James Shields

Sheilds did get them Tatis though.

Maybe he really likes Cherry Blossoms...and humidity you can rest your plate of food on.

Hosmer went to Boston. Not much better.

Boston is great!

It's only 200 miles from New York.

:D

D. Bergin 08-02-2022 01:21 PM

Hosmer not great anymore, but he is a big upgrade for the Red Sox at 1st base, and they're only 3 games out of a Wild Card spot.

packs 08-02-2022 01:56 PM

Don't think it's first base that's made them a 500 team.

No, but it didn't help. Obviously pitching has been their biggest issue this season. Even if they grab a Wild Card, they're not going far with that staff.

The Hosmer contract has been an albatross almost from the beginning... Those are nice odds now!

mrreality68 08-04-2022 05:12 AM

wow this odds are very dramatically changed.

They were going to be tough in the wild card round and playoffs but now they will be that much tougher.

He made his debut last night and had a nice debut
