What is the next 1887 Old Judge card you want to add to your collection?

For my part I guess a Hugh Duffy card would be nice since I will be reading his book in a week or so...I find it much more fun to go after a HOF that I own the book of!!!

There is a Hugh Duffy up on Ebay but it is way to beat up and the image is badly faded I would not buy that one that is for sure.

Yep!

dstudeba 04-12-2013 11:48 AM

A couple of years. It is actually from the SF Hess set which is slightly more common than the N172 California League players, but not much.

I would recommend you purchase the The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company 1886-1890, Old Judge's baseball cards. It is the best book on baseball cards I have read.

Zone91 04-12-2013 11:49 AM

dstudeba

I have the book but have yet to have time to go threw it all.

dstudeba 04-12-2013 11:56 AM

Good, you will enjoy reading it. Great book does justice to an amazing set.

Billy Sunday

Billy Sunday

bbcard1 04-12-2013 01:45 PM

I too have come very close to pulling the trigger on a couple of Billy Sunday cards....haven't done it yet.

Zone91 04-12-2013 01:46 PM

I have to ask why Billy Sunday guys...he seems to have had such a short career? Is it because he was a popular evangelist?

There was a nice looking Billy Sunday one on Ebay a few days ago.

Looking for a Lady Baldwin psa1 (can be beat just no paper loss):)dave.

Joe_G. 04-12-2013 05:27 PM

Gilligan w/ Detroit is currently high on my list. I'd also be happy adding a pose I need of Lady Baldwin or Deacon White.

Wite3 04-12-2013 06:52 PM

Any Old Judge Phillie I do not own for less than $100!!

I want a Pete Browning more than any other card. I've wanted one since I was a kid. Living in Louisville and Browning being the original Louisville Slugger, it would be the crown jewel of my collection. If anyone has one for sale/trade please let me know.

Chris

If I Had to Pick One...

...it would be the Frank Hankinson spotted tie. Last card I need for my OJ NJ subset.

I would settle, however, for a Jake Wells or a Peek-A-Boo Veach! :)

Jason 04-12-2013 08:08 PM

Acquiring a Jake Wells would be very nice.We aren't related but he spent a good portion of his career in Richmond,Va.Also he has a very interesting life story IMO.However I'm 99% sure this goal will never come to fruition.More realistically a nice Pop Tate.

cdn_collector 04-12-2013 08:10 PM

Today I'm saying it'll be a while before I am actively pursing an OJ to add to my collection. But when the day comes that I finally decide to pull the trigger on something, it's almost definitely going to be a Tip O'Neill.

Regards,

Richard.

Any Old Judge card since I don 't have any in my card collection. :o

z28jd 04-12-2013 09:49 PM

There have been so many wrong answers on here, half these players don't even have 1887 Old Judge cards!

glynparson 04-13-2013 08:02 AM

Why Billy Sunday

It's simple, Ramble on Rose by the Grateful Dead references Billy Sunday.

So right you are. Shame on me! :) I guess if I need to stick to 1887, I'll change my answer to Gaffney. I kind of like that card and he co-umpired the 1887 Championship. Otherwise, no 1887 wants. Plenty of 1888 wants and a couple 1889.

I've always wondered why OJ's are all lumped together on flips as "1887". It's clear that they were produced mainly over three years. Cracker Jacks are treated as two different sets, 1914 and 1915, so why not OJ's? If they were treated this way, people would see that they are a lot more rare when broken up by year.

Same with the various poses - yes, certain advanced collectors try to get every pose, but mostly the rarity of a player is considered with all the poses combined. Yes, a few players have 8-9 poses, but most only have 3-4, and even in the T206 set, there are plenty of players with 3-4 poses.

My point is that if the cards were dissected by pose and by year produced, collectors would realize that they are a lot more rare than when they are all lumped together as "1887 Old Judge". Even my cards of Nichols and Delahanty, whom we know didn't play in 1887, still have "1887 Old Judge" written on the flip.

Ignorance and laziness on the part of the TPG.

Do you know Left from Right? Do TPG's? I'm not too familiar with O. J.s but I do know left from right. Dave. (Not my card borrowed from ebay)

LOL! Whomever paid for their (PSA) service should be pissed. Would they refund the fee, or "re-flip" that thing for free? Disney should be proud...

Tpg

They need to figure out what an altered card is, there's too many OJs graded auth with no alterations. If someone that's been collecting for just a few years could tell then no excuse for the TPG.

paul 04-13-2013 06:52 PM

I'd like a Deacon White.
