Storing 33 Goudey

What do you all use to encase your ungraded 33 Goudeys? I like the 1-screw vintage card holders that Pro Mold has for Bowman and 52-56 Topps but does anything like this exist for Goudey cards? I hate the way they look in standard size toploaders.

I store mine helically, like the image below.

Actually, I am a Card Savers 2 type of fellow.

What, exactly, offends you about the toploader look?

Cmvorce 02-16-2021 04:26 PM

Brian, love the stack!

Conor, regarding top loaders for Goudeys, I just don’t like all the extra space. It’s a very petty thing, I know.

I wish they made recessed screw downs for Goudey.

perezfan 02-16-2021 05:34 PM

Same here...

Or the One Touch magnetized holders would be equally welcomed. Can't believe there is still nothing on the market for Goudeys.

FrankWakefield 02-16-2021 06:17 PM

I like the stack. Mine are currently loose, in a card box that I got from Lew Lipset about 25 years ago. They used to be in 9 pocket sheets in a ring binder.

Great pictures, guys!

conor912 02-16-2021 06:40 PM

I hear you on the extra space, though it’s really just at the top. Side to side they’re only 1/8” narrower than a modern card. Have you though about mylar? Not quite the rigidity of a toplaoder, but 4 mil isnt bad, plus you can cut the top to size.

drcy 02-16-2021 06:47 PM

I collect my Goudeys raw. Except in winter when I put on a robe.

Look!

My best advice, whether raw or robed, is to be barefoot. You are more likely to
sneak up on an unsuspecting Goudey that way.

Brian (thanks for all the stacked compliments guys!)

I love this. Old school collecting with fancy handmade dividers even. :) Great thread and pics. For the first time feel like I belong.

Cmvorce 02-18-2021 09:00 AM

Thanks for the tips on the Mylar sleeves, guys. I hadn’t thought of that.

Me too. Then into 4 pocket pages in an album.

I'm really into putting things into the binders these days. I really want to be able to open it up and look at the cards from time to time. Does anyone have strong feelings on laying the binders flat or up, vertically like on a book shelf?

I’ve heard it’s best to store the binder with the ring at the top so the pages are dangling. That supposedly prevents damage to the cards closest to the ring. But I don’t know how true or necessary that is.

NonSportDaniel 02-18-2021 11:27 AM

This is how I store my binders. Hanging from the spines so that the pages hang down with the force away from the rings. It also lets me lock the file cabinet with the binders safely inside.

If you place a binder on a shelf vertically, as you would a book, there is a risk that the weight of the pages will pull the back end down with binder opening up slightly and the pages contacting the shelf, leading to curling at the bottom of the pages -- and possibly the cards in the bottom slots. You can counter this by ensuring the front and back covers are tightly pressed against the pages or by using binder slip cases. The binder and slip case combinations sold by archival storage companies are very nice but also pricey. However, considering the value of what they're protecting, you might find them to be worth it.

I agree that binders can be a little scary with the sagging, so I had these binders custom made. The pages fit toploaders so even if the pages themselves sag, the card are protected. I built this storage unit for the binders that fits them snugly, so they don't sag either way.

Very well done! Like the finger notches to aid in grabbing the binders for removal.

Nice - who made the binders? They look like the same concept as these - https://toploaderbinder.com - but were they less expensive ($100 for 2 binders/80 pages)?

Thanks, guys. I’m really happy with them. I actually used the pages from this company. I wanted nicer binders than they had though, so I contacted a leather binder company and had them make me these. They were expensive as far as binders go, but storage and presentation are important to me, so it was worth it.

Love the setup, Conor. Looks great.

But WHY did you have to do this to me? After seeing your setup I clearly need those sleeves but agree that their binders just aren't... right. Looks like I'll be dumping funds into custom binders, too. :o

obiwan1129 02-20-2021 06:38 PM

This is why I come here. I love some of the set ups you guys have used and feel like I might have to up my game a bit. Thanks for the ideas.

Thanks, Chris! Some people think I go over the top on storage, but I don't know anyone who would put a Picasso in a $5 frame, and I don't see how a nice set in a cheap vinyl binder is any different.

Just following up, found some of these on Amazon for ~$43/ea. Made by a company called Lighthouse.

https://www.lighthouse.us/vario-g-pa...mechanism.html

Bought one to check it out and liked it, So I bought a couple more. I used regular Ultra Pro pages with the binders.

I liked these because they had the slipcases with them so I can store them with the pages dangling on a bookshelf. The engineer in me is now wondering if I need to work up some sort of metal grommet on the page holes.

I'm also ready to make up some nice wood bookends to keep them from getting knocked over by a random child or household pet.

John, excited to see this thread back at the top (one of my favorite discussions). Those binders look sweet. Are they big enough to fit complete sets from the 60s and 70s?

edjs 04-01-2021 06:54 PM

None of you guys use a rubber band and cigar box? Pure OG.

Not sure, I've pulled together some team sets, etc no full sets in the binder itself. I bought 4 of them, I wasn't trying to over pack them. It is just a nice way to have them all sorted and organized.

I measured the ring itself to be 2 1/4".

John, I ordered one of the lighthouse vario binder / slipcase combo for the 52 Topps set I'm working on. Love it. Thanks for the recommendation.
