Joe Tinker is at the far left. The piece is large and my scanner cut off the borders. Tinker's first year of organized ball was 1900. Are there earlier period images of him?

1901 Tinker

Thanks for sharing! I'm not aware of anything earlier, although I always thought there would be at least one period piece of Tinker from his playing days with the 1900 Denver Grizzlies (of the Western League) or the 1901 Portland Webfoots (of the Pacific Northwest League). My suspicions have now been confirmed on the latter thanks to you.

I had no idea that Carl Spackler's grandfather (behind Tinker) was involved with the Portland Webfoots.

(Seriously though, great photo.)

Thanks for the kind words and the information. The image in the supplement above was used in the 1901 Spalding Guide. Was Tinker pictured with Denver in the 1900 Spalding Guide? If Tinker is shown in the 1900 guide with Denver, then I'd suspect that if there is a 1900 Tinker item, that's what it would look like.

Don - cool page. I see that the webpage shows two images of Tinker with the 1900 Denver team. I'm guessing that neither was available as a supplement or cabinet, although the second photo has outstanding clarity.

Anyone have a 1900 Spalding Guide to look into whether the 1900 Denver team is shown?

Dto7 07-07-2015 09:24 AM

They were not in the Reach guide or Spalding guide..Here's the guides if you want to look.

Great site.

The first Denver team photo shown there claimed to include Tinker is wrong - he is not present in that photo.

He is present just right of the mascot in the second (larger) team photo.

Just a quick note, you would have to check the 1901 Spalding Guide for a 1900 team. If I remember correctly, I think there is either a 1900 or 1901 Tinker team pictured in the appropriate Spalding guide. I don't remember which one it is or if both might be there.

The 1901 Spalding Guide has a head-shot composite of the 1900 Denver team, but Tinker is absent.

Thanks - I found an excellent site online -- http://www.seanlahman.com/2014/08/in...ides/#Spalding -- that has most of the Spalding and Reach guides in pdf format. I saw the 1900 Denver team in the 1901 Spalding guide, as you mentioned and Tinker was noticeably absent.

Mark - Thanks for pointing out that Tinker wasn't in the first image from the Denver website. At first glance, I didn't see him, but hadn't spent much time analyzing the faces.

Brian - Sorry for hijacking the thread. Still love your 1901 piece!!
