Least Intimidating Logos/Mascots

Curious to see if anyone can top the Glenham Ducks. :)

Great topic. I've long been a fan of cartoon animal and bird mascots in baseball. Many animals mascots, like ones the Cardinals often use, seem angry, but not the ones I've posted below. I call these "warm and fuzzy" mascots. My all-time favorite is what I call the "Early Bird," which shows up below on the cover of the Orioles program ...

cannonballsun 03-04-2020 10:32 AM

Not very intimidating

I've always felt it would have to be the New Orleans Saints and their fleur de lis (lilly flower). A lilly flower isn't exactly intimidating, nor I guess would a saint be physically intimidating.

buymycards 03-04-2020 10:42 AM

Names

The Arkansas Tourists - not to be outdone by the Arkansas Travelers.

Sacramento Solons - a Solon is a lawmaker or a member of a legislative body.

Don't forget those Evansville Triplets!

San Jose Missions

The Knoxville Knox Sox

Newark Wayne Co-Pilots

I would like to see the logo for the Portland Beavers.

Also, I wonder about the logo for the Batavia Trojans.

The Wausau Timbers.

There, I have wasted enough time on this, but it was fun!

The original question did not say it had to be baseball. I was thinking the University of California Santa Clara Banana Slugs. A cross between a jaundiced Shrek and Barney. If you want to frighten your children threaten to have him visit your house!

I think a lot of people in Connecticut were annoyed when the AA New Britain Rock Cats were turned into the Hartford Yard Goats.

This is one of their bobblehead giveaways, BTW. A Yoga Goat, LOL. Embarrassing.

I mean, in a way, I guess you could call it kind of scary.

There are way too many to mention...

The New York Mets/Metropolitans
The Washington Senators/Nationals
The Philadelphia Phillies/Blue Jays
The Cincinnati Reds/Redlegs
The Chicago White Sox
The Boston Red Sox
The Oregon Ducks
The Irvine Anteaters
The Shreveport Steamer
The Philadelphia Bell
The Detroit Wheels
The Memphis Southmen

... are just a few that come to mind off the top of my head. There are infinitely more non-intimidating and benign team names that I can't readily conjure up.

Fun thread!

As long as you would butter him up a little he probably wouldn't be so hard and tough.

I think that the 'Killer Artichoke" would eat this flower bud alive...there fore the Rosebuds are the wimpier example. I believe this 28 1/2 inch pennant is from their 1959 season.

Evergreen State Geoducks (gooey-ducks). It's a really large clam. The mascot outfits are dreadful.

I think the Guilford Quakers (my cousin was a pretty good football player there) is about as bad as it gets. Quakers are pacifists. One of three peace churched (Mennonites, Quakers and Brethren). Technically, their cheerleaders should chant,"BE-FRIEND THEM! BE-FRIEND THEM"

Even the mascot looks more constipated than fierce.

I live in Nagoya, the home of the Chunichi Dragons.

You would expect the team to have a bad-ass Dragon mascot or logo. Because the team is called "Dragons" and.....yeah, its just common sense, right?

But no, our mascot is a cute, cuddly koala named "Doala".

Because Japan.

I went to school in Fisher Illinois, home of the Bunnies. The new logo they are using does make it look like the Bunnies have rabies.

That is UC Santa Cruz, Santa Clara is the Broncos.

Dang! There must be some good pretzels nearby to name your school after them. Or was it a community vote, like boaty mcboatface?

Bunnies are quite the fierce logo.

What is a thread without a beer logo?

Harvey Ball, the creator of the smiley face, was from Worcester. I would see his son, an attorney in town, at the courthouse almost every day. Always called his dad by his first name. My accountant told me about the team and the new stadium last year (horrible location). My first thought when I heard the name was the episode of 'How I Met Your Mother' where they talk about 'woo girls'.

DHogan 03-06-2020 03:01 PM

Worcester is trying to bring in tourist $. They should help the people that live in the south Main St area first.

The intercollegiate competitors of my alma mater, Williams College, are called the Ephmen after Colonel Ephraim Williams, founder of the college and a hero of the French and Indian War. He was memorialized in a painting called the Bloody Morning Scout based on the day in 1755 he lost his life fighting near Lake George Village in New York.

So, did the college base their mascot on him? No. Their mascot is a purple cow named Ephelia. It is my avatar here.

carlsonjok 03-09-2020 05:56 AM

Two things come to mind:

New Orleans Baby Cakes

http://ballparkdigest.com/wp-content...9255293730.jpg

Rochester (Red Wings) Plates

https://www.syracuse.com/resizer/tcA...0e0ff5a786.jpg

Plates is a reference to the famous Rochester Garbage Plate, which depending on your perspective and coronary health, could be the most intimidating logo.

mr2686 03-09-2020 06:16 AM

Back in the day, when it was slow at work, we would sometimes sit around and compare our college mascots to see who had the worst. We had Aztecs, Bears, Bulldogs...and then there was the Banana Slug. No contest. LOL

I can't believe that no one has mentioned the Chicago Whales of the Federal League! That's the first name that I thought of when I saw the title to this thread.

I'd feel pretty safe playing against them as long as the game was on dry ground.

I wish these guys had a mascot!

KMayUSA6060 03-10-2020 06:21 AM

Gotta go with the University of Akron Zips - my favorite school. "Zips" stems from "Zippers", which was a rubber overshoe made by the BF Goodrich Company in the 1920s/30s. A campus-wide vote then made the mascot Zippy, a female kangaroo.

In the mid-2000s, a marketing campaign began to make everything about the logo/nickname/mascot more intimidating. "Fear The Roo" was the obvious choice. But in the end, we still have a female marsupial for a mascot, and are named after a freaking overshoe - not a regular shoe, but an overshoe.

San Jose had the Prune Pickers in the early 1900s. It would be funny if you could move up from the Prune Pickers to the Prune Packers. Like A to AA.

Extending that concept, if there was a baseball senior league, one team could then be the Prune Eaters. If they got on a winning streak, the local beat writers could say the team won "regularly." :D

I've seen a few high schools mentioned. I graduated from Gwinn HS in Michigan. The Modeltowners. Very intimidating.

On a professional level, down the road from Austin, the San Antonio Missions reside. Their mascot is the Puffy Taco.
