Jack Lelivelt

Lelivelt played for NYAL in 1912 and 1913. In 1911 he was with Washington AL but traded to the Rochester Hustlers. The Hustlers were managed by Jack Ganzel and seemed to function as a NYAL farm team. The Conlon photo of Lelivelt is noted on reverse as NYAL but he is in what looks to be a Washington uniform. Possible that this was taken at Polo Grounds when he reported in 1912. Possible he wore his ML Washington uni rather than his Rochester uni when he came up? Can anyone tell from background if this is Polo Grounds? Could also originally be from 1910-11 if Washington was visiting for a game and then reprinted and relabeled by Conlon?

The Highlanders were still playing at Hilltop Park in 1912. Old press photos were often re-used and re-labeled in the early 20th Century; most likely this photo was taken in 1911, when the Nationals were wearing the uniform depicted in the image.

I should have checked dates re Polo Grounds!

Anybody want to weigh in on location of the background?

ok, thanks. I think 1912 makes sense and possibly my assumption about the uni makes sense

Players wore their uniforms from the previous season during spring training, but not during the championship (regular) season. A game at Hilltop Park would not have been a spring training game, and Lelivelt was not with the Highlanders during spring training. Lelivelt is in a 1911 Washington uniform, so it follows that the photo was taken in 1911 when he played for Washington while they visited New York. He was traded from Rochester to the Highlanders on August 23rd, 1912, and would have received a New York uniform when he joined the team.

Thanks. I think this is definitive. Conlon very likely pulled a 1911 file print and labeled it NY A when Lelivelt was traded in 1912
