5 yrs & 10 mos. Mission accomplished...

I have finally finished with the completion of my T205 set (for the most part). The Hoblitzell will have to wait while I concentrate on other things. So it will remain at 99% for quite some time.

Thanks to the board for introducing me to the world of pre-war cards as well as helping me in my journey with the addition of some of the cards in the set. When I joined here in July 2007, I had very limited knowledge about that era and nothing outside of T206 and T3s. I purchased my first pre-war which was a T205 (Hugh Jennings) in November 2007 and after that, I was hooked. I wasn't originally going to complete the set, but after reading posts from some of you here, I thought what the heck. To me, they were unique with the colorful designs and the fact that they had bios with statistics. I believe they were the catalyst for todays cards and ahead of their time. It was also a set that I had a realistic shot of completing (except for the Hoblitzell) and was within my budget.

So what began with the purchase of Hugh Jennings was finished with the addition of Charles Schmidt on September 5th 2013. It has been a great experience for both myself as well as my son. We started the journey together when he was 11 yrs old. It seemed like it has taken me a while to complete until I look at him and realize that the time really has flown by. I'm sure that I will upgrade as time goes along, but for now, I will just enjoy this achievement.

I wish to thank everyone here on the board that has been instrumental in my accomplishment, but I especially want to thank Matt & Turner, Joshua, Andrew, Matt W & Marc D for not only helping me acquire certain cards, but sharing their knowledge and research.

It was hard to capture a clear picture of the entire set, but you get the idea.

Congrats Frank! Besides a cheap Hobby falling into your lap, what's next?

PolarBear 09-11-2013 04:23 PM

Awesome! I started a set about 6 years ago but gave up after a dozen cards. It's still one of my favorite sets of all time. The Joss tribute card is one of the best cards of all time.

I agree too, that adding bio's was innovative and in fact, I think that makes T205 the first "true" baseball cards as opposed to just being pictures of baseball players. I really wish they would have done the entire 400 subject set. That would have truly been awesome.

As far as the Hoblitzell goes, personally, I would consider the set complete without it. There are many back variations, including different cigarette brands, so unless you're doing a complete master set of every single back variation, I personally don't think you need this card to be 100% complete.

Anyway, congrats on a great achievement! It makes me want to start this set again.

Congrats on finishing the set!! I don't know much about this set other than the information and great pics shared on here. I'm going to have to do a search on Hoblitzell to learn more about that one.

Another long time T205 guy here, finished my base set two years ago, but have been upgrading a little, gathering the back variations (i have the front variations) and slabbing them with SGC.

Frank, I see your set on the registry every time I update mine. (and of course a few other guys here too:p)

Congrats for getting them all, its an awesome set! Way to go!

+1. It just doesn't get any better than not only completing the set but also having your son by your side while doing it. And if I have said it once I have said it a hundred times, I still think the T205 set is one of, if not THE, best looking sets in the hobby. Of course we all have our opinions, and that is mine. Congratulations on your completion!!

Thanks all for the kind words. It has been a blast, and I'm glad that we were able to finish before he heads off to college next year.

Daryl, I haven't quite decided between the T3s or Cracker Jack. I like each for various reasons, but I am leaning slightly toward the T3s. Whichever I choose, I won't tackle that until I transfer next summer as I've got quite a bit to do over the next year.

Steve, I"m sure you will reach that goal quicker than I did. It is great to see fresh new people who are interested in the set. It certainly doesn't get the attention like some of the other pre-war cards/set do. I got side tracked throughout the almost 6 years we have been collecting the set. The Hoblitzell "no stats" is the only card I'm missing. I'm waiting for one to fall into my lap as Daryl mentioned.

Thanks Peter, glad to be a part of the club. How long did it take you to complete your set?

Thanks Brian. Like you, I see quite a few familiar people when I go to update my registry. It's pretty neat to see the progress and accomplishment of others on here. I hope that you will share a picture of yours (T205s that is) once you have completed it.

Andrew, Thanks again for your contribution not only to the hobby, but more specifically what you have provided for all the T205 collectors out here. I know some of us have different opinions about a particular subject, but it is great to see the collaboration that takes place on here.

Leon I think you should build the set. You have a lot of neat T205's and nice ones to boot. I know your a type collector but I think you would enjoy the thrill of chasing the set and having all your unique ones added in like the McGraw scrap and your others. Hope you one day chase it.

Thank you Frank. I started as a collector a few yrs before you and wasn't familiar with the set. Then I found Net54 from a board member contacting me on the SGC registry and........well the rest is history from there. As time went there was a lot of unanswered questions and other things I started chasing and questioning. There has been a lot of help from others in the hobby and I want to send a big THANK YOU to all of them. We 205's guys have made leps and bounds in research in the last 5 yrs. Hope to continue on and unlock more of the secrets to the set. I do hope to launch into the hobby full time in the next yr or so(cross my fingers) and make a bigger ripple where it needs to be. If I come across a NO Stats I will hit you up. When your ready to upgrade your AB's and sell them let me know:D
