Duke is one of my favorite players. And I got to meet him once in the early 2000s. It was completely by accident, but I was on my way home from college. I stopped at Gil's Infield in Duncanville on the way home (first time I'd ever been), and Duke was there signing. Got to meet and get an autograph of him.

The only Snider cards I have are the '58 that's currently in my set. I know I got his autograph that day in the early 2000s, but I don't even remember what I got autographed. Probably a photo I later sold to the card shop owner where I was going to college because I needed some money.

I had a pretty healthy Snider collection at one point but have sold quite a few off. I picked this up at the 2017 National and it's a keeper:

When I was growing up and got into cards, The Dodgers became my team. Now keep in mind I discovered cards in the late 70s, but I had an appreciation for the history as well and became infatuated with the Boys of Summer. So although I would not have stepped over a Mantle or a Mays, I tended to go after Dodgers first. Have lots of Snider stuff. That hurts me in the value department today vs Mays and Mantle, but I enjoyed it and that is what counts.

Nothing of any significance scanned or handy at the moment though.

I was never able to meet Mr Snider, even though he lived only 20 miles away for many years. But, I was able to get this signed 1955 Topps, for my collection, from a very nice board member. I like that it was signed across the entire card. Just awesome!

Duke Snider

First, I will tell you a story about Duke Snider which I think you will appreciate. The Duke excelled in all sports in High School, and especially Football.

Remember Pete Rozelle, the NFL Commissioner (1960 - 1989), Rozelle and Snider were classmates at Compton High School (California) in the early 1940's.

A Sports reporter was stunned by Pete Rozelle's answer when he asked him….. "what was the most exciting play Pete had seen in all his years in Football ?"

Pete smiled and replied...."In 1944, his High School was playing for the Championship, and with less than 10 seconds left in the game, Snider (QB) threw a
perfect 63-yard pass to his receiver to win the game. Compton High School won the Championship that year."

Can you imagine....an 18-year old throwing the football approx. two/thirds the length of the field with just 10 seconds left in the game. This is absolutely an
unbelievable performance. Anyhow, I'm glad he chose Baseball for his career.

Black back -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Red back

I met Duke Snider at the Asbury Park, NJ Show (1990). We had a nice conversation reminiscing about Baseball in the 1950's.
He was one of the most gracious and friendly Baseball stars that I have ever met at a BB card show.
